What Is the IGNOU MCOM Project (MCOP-001)?
The IGNOU MCOM project is MCOP-001, a compulsory six credit Project course in Semester 4 of the Master of Commerce. You first get a synopsis approved through your Regional Centre, then write a dissertation of about 60 to 80 double spaced pages. IGNOU supplies no study material for MCOP-001; guidance comes from your approved guide.
You will see the same course written four ways: MCOP-001 on the IGNOU website and in the guidelines PDF, MCOP-01 in the printed M.Com Programme Guide, and MCOP 1 or MCOP1 in everyday searches. All four point to one course. On your proforma, cover page and envelope, use MCOP-001, because that is the form the course guidelines themselves use. MCOP-001 applies to the ODL M.Com (programme code MCOM) and to M.Com Online (MCOMOL), whose learners submit through the LMS portal instead of by post.
This category holds MCOP-001 synopsis and project report samples in soft copy. They are reference material for checking structure and document order before you write your own. The rest of this page explains the official process so you can use them properly.

IGNOU MCOM Project Guidelines PDF: Where to Get the Official Copy
The official IGNOU MCOM project guidelines are a single PDF titled “MCOP-001: Project Course, Guidelines for Submission of Synopsis and Project Report”, issued by the Commerce Discipline of the School of Management Studies. IGNOU hosts it on eGyanKosh under Master of Commerce, Semester IV, and Regional Centres such as Karnal publish the same file.
The PDF is short, and it is worth reading end to end before you buy, write or sign anything. It contains the whole process in one place:
- The guideline text: topic selection, the four permitted study types, guide eligibility, synopsis contents, report structure, submission and result windows.
- Annexure-I: the Proforma for Approval of Project Proposal or Synopsis. This is the form students search for as the “MCOM synopsis front page” or “project proforma”. It carries boxes for the evaluator, not just for you and your guide.
- Annexure-II: the Certificate of Originality, signed and dated by you and your guide.
- Annexure-III: the remuneration bill your guide uses to claim payment for guidance.
One detail matters for everything that follows. The footer of the PDF carries the reference SOMS-IGNOU/P.O. 5T/September, 2012. The document is still the course-specific rulebook, but some arrangements around it have moved on since it was printed. The next section maps exactly which.
Direct links to both official copies are in the sources list at the end of this page. Copies circulating on document-sharing sites are sometimes edited or incomplete, so download from an IGNOU domain.
What the 2012 Guidelines Say, and What Has Changed Since
Most of the MCOP-001 guidelines still apply as written, but four practical points have moved: how the report can be submitted, the evaluation fee, the viva, and one wording error in the originality certificate. Reading the PDF alone, without the later IGNOU notices, is how learners end up posting a report without a fee receipt or copying a certificate unchanged.
The table below sets the guidelines text beside what current IGNOU documents say. Where a later document is session-specific, the table says so.
| Topic | MCOP-001 guidelines (2012 PDF) | Current IGNOU position |
| Where the synopsis goes | The Regional Director of your own Regional Centre, envelope marked “MCOP-001”. MCOMOL learners use the LMS portal. | Unchanged for MCOP-001. The general M.Com Programme Guide lists the Project Coordinator of the School for synopsis approval, but the course-specific guidelines name your Regional Director. Follow the course document. |
| How the report is submitted | One bound copy to the Registrar (SED), IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi 110068, at any time of year. | SED also runs an online project portal for each term-end cycle. It takes one scanned PDF per course, has its own last date for that cycle, removes incomplete uploads after the last date, and does not accept reports sent by email. |
| Project evaluation fee | The receipt must be bound in. The amount is not stated. | Rs 500 for project work above 4 credits, which covers six credit MCOP-001, paid with the Term-End Examination form, applicable from the January 2023 admission cycle. SED states that a report is not considered if the fee was not paid with the exam form. |
| Guide payment | Rs 300 per student through Annexure-III, sent with the report in a separate envelope. | No later change found. This Rs 300 is your guide’s remuneration, a different thing from the Rs 500 evaluation fee you pay. |
| Viva voce | Not mentioned anywhere. | The M.Com Programme Guide says project evaluation is based on the report. The SED portal instructions say viva is conducted under certain guidelines by the faculties concerned under the Regional Centre. No mark split is published. |
| Maximum duration | Four years. Report evaluation is rejected after the maximum duration. | Unchanged: the programme page shows 24 to 48 months and the July 2026 Common Prospectus shows 2 to 4 years. |
| Certificate of Originality wording | Annexure-II refers to the Master’s Degree in Business Administration. | This reads as a carry-over from the MBA form. You are submitting for the Master of Commerce, so ask your Regional Centre how it wants that line worded before you sign. |
The fee and portal rows come from the SED project portal instructions and the July 2026 Common Prospectus, not from the MCOP-001 PDF. Portal dates and arrangements are set per cycle, so check the live notice for your own session.

IGNOU MCOM Project Topics: Weak Titles and Stronger Versions
IGNOU publishes no list of approved MCOM project topics. You choose your own topic, preferably from Marketing, Finance, Human Resource, International Business, Accounting and Taxation, or a related emerging area, and the title must communicate the main theme and subject matter of the study. The IGNOU programme page also names e-commerce and banking as example areas.
Before the title, decide which of the four study types the guidelines permit you are doing, because each implies a different kind of data:
- Survey based field study, an empirical study on data you collect.
- Comprehensive case study of one organisation or a multifunctional problem inside it, covering problem formulation, analysis and recommendations.
- Inter-organisational study for comparison, validation of theory or a survey of management practices.
- Any other research based work, which is the route for studies built on published financial data.
Most weak titles fail the same test: a reader cannot tell what is being studied, in which population or organisation, or over what period. The pairs below are our own illustrations of that test, not IGNOU-approved topics and not a promise that any title will be accepted.
| Area | Weak title | Why it is weak | Stronger version |
| Accounting and Taxation | A Study on GST | No population, no variable, no boundary. It could describe a hundred different studies. | GST Compliance Practices of Small Retail Traders in a Selected District |
| Finance | Financial Analysis of Indian Banks | Too many banks, no period, no measure. The data job alone is unfinishable. | Financial Performance of Two Selected Public Sector Banks, 2020-21 to 2024-25: A Ratio Analysis |
| Marketing | Impact of Digital Marketing | Impact on whom, and measured how? It also assumes an impact before the study begins. | Social Media Advertising and Purchase Intention among College Students in a Selected City |
| Human Resource | Employee Motivation in Companies | No sector or organisation, so no respondent group you can actually reach. | Work-Life Balance and Job Satisfaction of Women Employees in Selected Private Sector Banks |
| International Business | India’s Foreign Trade | A textbook chapter, not a research problem. | Export Performance of Indian Readymade Garments to Selected Markets after 2020 |
| E-commerce and Banking | UPI in India | Describes a subject, not what you will find out about it. | Usage Patterns of UPI Payments among Small Vendors in a Selected Market Area |
A title also has to match your guide. The guidelines ask guides to supervise only in their own area, so a taxation title with a marketing specialist as guide is a mismatch the evaluator can see on the proforma. And once a title is approved, it is locked: the final report must carry the title the evaluator approved.
Discuss your MCOP-001 topic before writing the synopsis
MCOM Project Report Format: The Ten Parts IGNOU Lists
The MCOP-001 guidelines list ten components for the dissertation, about 60 to 80 double spaced typed pages on A-4, bound, with rational variation permitted and APA referencing. It helps to know this structure before you write the synopsis, because the report must deliver exactly what the approved synopsis promised.
- Introduction, with the rationale of the study.
- Review of literature.
- Research methodology: rationale, statement of problem, objectives and scope, research design, nature and source of data, sample and sampling method with rationale, and details of tools, including the reliability and validity of the tools used.
- Results and discussion, presented in tabular or graphical form with elaborate interpretation.
- Summary and conclusion.
- Recommendations.
- Implications.
- Limitations of the project and direction for further research (optional).
- References or bibliography, in APA style.
- Annexures or appendices, including the questionnaire used.
Three things are absent from the list, and their absence is informative. There is no abstract or executive summary, no word count, and no font, font size or margin rule. Figures such as 15,000 to 20,000 words, Times New Roman 12 point or one inch margins come from third-party pages, not from IGNOU. What the guidelines do prescribe is A-4, double spacing, a bound volume, a detailed table of contents with page numbers, and every page numbered to match it.
Recommendations, Implications and Limitations are separate components, not paragraphs tucked into the conclusion. A report that compresses them into one closing chapter is not following the listed structure.
Who Can Be Your MCOM Project Guide?
Your MCOP-001 guide must meet one of three eligibility routes, and a guide may supervise no more than five MCOP-001 students at a time. A proposal naming an ineligible guide, or a guide already at five, comes back.
- Commerce Faculty in the School of Management Studies at IGNOU Headquarters.
- An approved academic counsellor of the M.Com programme with five years of teaching experience at study centres.
- Commerce or Management faculty with five years of postgraduate teaching experience, or a professional holding a Master’s degree in Commerce or an allied discipline with at least five years of experience in the relevant area.
If you identify your own guide rather than using an approved counsellor, a detailed bio-data goes with the synopsis, signed in original and dated by the guide. It must show the guide’s name and date of birth, residential and workplace addresses with contact numbers, each degree with specialisation, institution, year and percentage of marks, and work experience in chronological order with designation, period and a contactable organisation address. A current business card may be attached.
The proforma asks one more question that surprises people: whether the supervisor is an academic counsellor, and if so, the study centre code and the courses they counsel for. Fill it accurately. Changing your guide later counts as a new proposal, on a fresh proforma signed by the new guide.
MCOM Synopsis Format: What Goes into the Proposal
The MCOP-001 synopsis has seven parts: Introduction, Rationale, Literature Review, Objectives, Research Methodology, Implications of the Study, and Limitations of the proposed project if any. It is prepared in consultation with your guide and sent with the signed Annexure-I proforma and the guide’s bio-data. The guidelines advise starting it from Semester 3 onwards.
The methodology part carries six named elements: research design; nature and source of data; sample and sampling technique with the rationale for the chosen issues and sample; tools and techniques for data collection, including the questionnaire and its relevance to the objectives; the method of data collection; and data handling and analysis, including the statistical tools and their relevance to the objectives. Relevance to the objectives appears twice in that list. Evaluators read the methodology against the objectives, line by line.
The guidelines call objectives “the most important aspect of any project”. They must be stated neutrally, without assuming the findings. The sample objectives printed in the PDF begin with examine, explore, analyse and investigate, which is a useful hint about tone.
On Annexure-I you also name a broad Subject Area separately from the topic. The guidelines’ own example: a project titled “Financial Performance of XYZ Ltd” has the Subject Area Finance. The listed areas are HRM and OB, Accounting and Finance, Operations Management and Information System, Marketing, Corporate Management, or Any Other that you specify.
Studying MCO-03, Research Methodology and Statistical Analysis, in Semester 3 is directly useful here: its course outline covers research plans, sampling, measurement and scaling, hypothesis testing and report writing, which is the vocabulary the methodology section is asking for.
Why MCOP-001 Synopses Come Back from the Regional Centre
The guidelines state the grounds on which a synopsis or report is rejected or returned, and nearly all of them are paperwork, not research quality. These are the documented grounds, in the guidelines’ own terms:
- The guide’s bio-data is missing, incomplete, or not signed in original. The guidelines say a synopsis without a complete, signed bio-data “shall not be considered”.
- The Annexure-I proforma is not signed and dated by both you and your guide.
- The proposal is incomplete in any respect.
- The proposed guide does not meet the eligibility criteria, which means changing the guide and submitting afresh.
- After re-admission, the approval is still held on your old enrolment number. Approval must be sought again on the new number, or the report may not be accepted.
- At the report stage: a stapled rather than bound-in proposal, any required document missing from the volume, or a title different from the approved one.
Approval or non-approval is communicated in writing, with a Project Proposal (PP) number, within two to three months of the proposal reaching the Regional Centre. If it is not approved, you receive the evaluator’s comments and resubmit the revised synopsis with a fresh proforma, the rejected copy carrying the comments, and your PP number. That restarts the wait, which is why the paperwork deserves as much care as the writing.
Is There a Viva for the IGNOU MCOM Project?
A viva for MCOP-001 is possible but not described in the MCOP-001 guidelines, and IGNOU publishes no report and viva mark split for it. The M.Com Programme Guide states that evaluation of the project course is based on the project report. The SED online portal instructions add that viva for project reports is conducted under certain guidelines by the faculties concerned under the Regional Centre, and tell students to contact their Regional Centre about it.
So the sensible position is simple. Do not assume a viva is scheduled, and do not believe a specific split such as 150 marks for the report and 50 for the viva unless your Regional Centre gives it to you in writing. If you are called, attend, and be ready to explain your problem statement, objectives, sampling choice, the statistical tools you used, and how your recommendations follow from your results. Our article on IGNOU MCOM project viva questions covers typical questions.
Frequently Asked Questions About the IGNOU MCOM Project
Is there a last date for the MCOP-001 synopsis?
The MCOP-001 guidelines set no calendar last date for the synopsis. The real limit is your maximum programme duration, minus the two to three months the Regional Centre takes to evaluate the proposal and the time you need to write the report. Dates for synopsis submission that circulate online do not appear in the guidelines.
How many pages should the MCOM synopsis be?
The guidelines do not specify a length for the synopsis. They specify its seven parts and the six methodology elements. Length should follow from covering those properly, not from a page target.
Can I write the MCOP-001 project in Hindi?
The M.Com programme is offered in English and Hindi medium, according to the IGNOU programme page and the Common Prospectus. The MCOP-001 guidelines do not state which language the synopsis or report must use, so confirm with your Regional Centre and make sure your guide can supervise in that language.
Can I use only secondary data for my MCOM project?
Yes, if it fits your design. The fourth permitted study type is “any other research based work”, and the methodology section asks for the nature and source of data, which may be secondary. Say clearly where the data comes from and which statistical tools you will apply to it.
Can my guide have an MBA or a PhD instead of an M.Com?
The professional route requires a Master’s degree in Commerce or an allied discipline with at least five years of experience in the relevant area, and faculty qualify through Commerce or Management teaching experience at postgraduate level. Eligibility is judged from the signed bio-data, so if you are unsure whether a degree counts as allied, ask your Regional Centre before posting.
How many copies of the MCOP-001 report do I send?
One. The guidelines say to send one copy and keep one yourself, because the submitted report is not returned after evaluation.
Can I email my MCOM project report to IGNOU?
No. The SED portal instructions state that reports received by email are not considered. Submit by post or hand to the Registrar (SED), or through the online portal for the current cycle. MCOMOL learners use the LMS portal.
What are the passing marks for the MCOM project?
The M.Com Programme Guide’s evaluation scheme treats below 40 percent as unsuccessful and 40 to 49 percent as a pass. It does not publish a separate MCOP-001 marking scheme or split.
Can I apply for re-evaluation of my MCOP-001 project?
No. The Programme Guide states that re-evaluation, improvement of division and early declaration of result are available for term-end examinations only, not for projects or dissertations.
Which MCOP-001 Sample in This Category Fits Your Stage?
Pick the sample that matches the document you are about to write: the synopsis sample before your proposal is approved, and the project report sample after you receive your approval letter and PP number. Both are soft copy reference material.
- Still choosing a topic or drafting the proposal: the synopsis sample shows the seven-part structure and how a methodology section links tools to objectives.
- Synopsis approved, data being collected: the project report sample shows the ten components on the page, including what “tabular or graphical” results with elaborate interpretation look like.
- Want printed and bound reference sets: use the IGNOU MCOM project hard copy category, which also covers physical submission.
- Revising research methods first: the IGNOU MCOM books and MCOM solved guess papers cover MCO-03. M.Com Online learners can use the MCOMOL books category.
Use the samples to check structure, order and presentation. Your topic, data, analysis and writing must be your own; the Certificate of Originality you sign says so, and a copied report is dealt with under the University’s plagiarism policy.
Ask which MCOP-001 sample fits your stage
When to Submit the MCOM Project Report, and How to Track It
The MCOP-001 report can be submitted at any time of year, within your maximum programme duration. Reports reaching SED between 1 December and 31 May are declared with the June term-end results; those between 1 June and 30 November with the December results. These are result windows, not submission deadlines, although each cycle of the SED online portal does have its own last date. A PR number is allotted on submission; quote it in any query to the Registrar (SED) at [email protected]. Proposal queries go to your Regional Centre with your PP number.
If you need a project built around your own topic and data rather than a reference sample, that is handled by our customised project service on a separate site.
