What Is the IGNOU MASS Project (MSDP 18), and Do You Have to Do It?

The IGNOU MASS project is MSDP 18 Project Work, the 8-credit project course in the second year of the M.A. (Sustainability Science) programme run by the School of Interdisciplinary and Trans-disciplinary Studies (SOITS). It is the only project in the 72-credit programme. Most MASS students must complete it, but one group of PGDSS lateral entrants is exempt.

The Common Prospectus July 2026 lists MSDP 18 alongside six second-year theory courses: MEV 25 Climate Change and Society, MSD 21 Mountain and Hill Ecosystem, MSD 22 Aquatic Ecosystem, MEDS 51 Fundamentals of CSR, MSD 23 Social Ecology, Globalisation and Sustainability, and MEDS 44 Monitoring and Evaluation of Projects and Programmes. MASS runs for a minimum of two years and a maximum of four, in English, for graduates of any discipline, at Rs 8,200 a year. The MASS programme website describes MSDP 018 as learning by doing: you take a sustainability issue, programme or project at field level and study it with the research methods taught in the theory courses.

MSDP 18, MSDP-018 or MSDP-011: which code is right?

All three name the same 8-credit second-year project. IGNOU prints the code differently in different places, and students searching one spelling often land on pages that use another. Use the table below to recognise your course, and copy the code exactly as it appears on your own registration or examination form.

Who does not have to do MSDP 18?

The prospectus carves out one group. Learners registered in PGDSS (ODL or online) between July 2017 and July 2022 who take lateral entry into the second year of MASS complete three courses in place of MSDP 018: MSD 19 Global Strategies to Sustainable Development, MSD 20 Population, Health and Sustainability, and MEVE 16 Urban Environment, 4 credits each. If you are in that group, check your registration before you buy any project material, because you may not need a project at all.

Where Does the MSDP 18 Proposal Go, and Is Your Package Ready?

Your MSDP 18 project proposal goes to the Coordinator (MASS), School of Interdisciplinary and Transdisciplinary Studies, Swami Vivekanand Bhawan, IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi 110068. It does not go to your Regional Centre. SOITS faculty approve the proposal and the supervisor separately, and SOITS assigns the Project Proposal Number.

The official proforma makes the routing plain. The Annexure II form, titled Proforma for Approval of Project Proposal (MSDP-018), already prints “Study Centre: SOITS, IGNOU, New Delhi” and “Regional Centre: HQ, IGNOU”. Its office-use box has two separate approval lines, one for the project proposal and one for the supervisor, followed by space for faculty comments. The MASS website contact block also lists the programme office at the Ground Floor, Block 15, so check the current address with [email protected] before you post.

Proposal readiness check: do not post until every row is true

Work down this list in order. Each row comes from the official proforma or the MASS Project Work page. If one row is false, stop and fix it, because the later rows depend on it.

Gate 7 is the one the form itself warns about. The proforma states that if the complete and signed bio-data of the supervisor is not enclosed, the proposal will not be entertained.

Begin fieldwork only after the approved proforma comes back, because the final report has to carry that approved proforma and the approved proposal. The official MASS pages do not state how long approval takes, so ask the coordinator rather than relying on the “four to six weeks” that circulates on third-party sites.

Who Can Be Your IGNOU MASS Project Guide?

An IGNOU MASS project guide can be IGNOU headquarters faculty, a PGDSS academic counsellor with relevant experience, a teacher or researcher in sustainable development, a PhD holder in Environmental Science, Economics, Sociology, Anthropology or a related discipline, or a Master’s or MPhil holder in those fields with two years of research or teaching experience.

SOITS can refuse a proposed supervisor. If it does, the MASS Project Work page says the student is told, changes the supervisor and resubmits the proposal. The same page lists SOITS faculty who can be requested as supervisors, which is useful if you cannot find a qualified guide locally.

A good MSDP 18 supervisor does more than sign. The official list of supervisor responsibilities includes helping you narrow to a very focused topic, pointing you to settings where empirical data can be collected, directing you to related literature, encouraging original work, and issuing a letter of authorisation so you can collect data. That letter can also come from your Study Centre or Regional Centre. Ask for it before you approach any office, NGO, village body or company for data, because many will not share records without one.

The bio-data rule from the readiness check applies here: collect the supervisor’s complete, signed bio-data at the same meeting where you agree on the topic. A missing signature on that one document is enough for the proposal to be set aside.

IGNOU MASS Project Topics That Pass the Official Checks

A good IGNOU MASS project topic is relevant to sustainable development, small enough to finish in the time you have, and backed by data you can actually reach. The MASS Project Work page lists seven checks: suitability, relevance to sustainability, time, feasibility of data collection, data challenges, cost, and communication and local language.

The last two checks are the ones students skip. A household survey in a district where you do not speak the language, or a study that needs paid laboratory tests, can pass the first five checks and still collapse at the data stage. Pick a locale you can visit and respondents you can talk to.

A practical way to find a topic is to start from a second-year course you have already studied, because your literature review then has a ready base. These title shapes are examples written for this page, not approved titles:

• MEV 25 Climate Change and Society: Awareness and adaptation practices of smallholder farmers towards erratic rainfall in [block, district].
• MSD 22 Aquatic Ecosystem: Community use and condition of [named lake or pond] in [town]: a field study.
• MEDS 51 Fundamentals of CSR: Environmental CSR spending and reported outcomes of [two or three named companies] in [state].
• MEDS 44 Monitoring and Evaluation: Implementation status of [a named scheme] in [selected villages]: an evaluation of selected indicators.
• MSD 21 Mountain and Hill Ecosystem: Tourism pressure and solid waste handling in [hill town].

Older titles such as “An Analytical Study on Environmental Global Warming” are too broad for an 8-credit field project: they have no locale, no population and no measurable boundary. Add a place, a group and a time frame, and the same idea becomes finishable.

IGNOU MASS Project Hard Copy: What a Printed MSDP 18 Set Gives You

An IGNOU MASS project hard copy from this category is a printed reference set for MSDP 18: a sample proposal and a sample project report laid out in the order the official formats use, delivered as a bound copy you can annotate. It is a model to study and learn from, not a report to submit as your own.

Be clear about what IGNOU already gives you free. The MASS programme website has a Formats section with the proposal format, the originality certificate and the final report format, and a Sample Reports section with a proposal and a full project report from earlier learners. Read those first. In What Order Should a Bound MSDP 18 Report Run?

A bound MSDP 18 report opens with a title page giving the project title, your name, address, enrolment number and year, then the Originality Certificate signed by you and your supervisor, then the acknowledgement and table of contents, then the chapters, references in APA style, and copies of the approved proforma, approved proposal and supervisor bio-data.

Row 5 is built from the official evaluation scheme rather than quoted from the format document, because the public preview of that document breaks off after the table of contents. Write a chapter for every marked part, and do not let the literature review shrink into the introduction: it carries its own 10 marks.

What the official MASS pages do not state: a font, a margin, a line spacing, a page or word limit, a binding type or a copy count. A figure of “around 100 pages, double spaced” is quoted by third-party sites from the 2019 PGDSS handbook, which we could not read directly. Treat any such rule as advice from your supervisor, not a University requirement.

How to Submit the MSDP 18 Report: Post or Portal, Rs 500 Fee and December 2026

Send the MSDP 18 project report to the Registrar (Students Evaluation Division), IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi 110068, or upload it through the SED online project portal when IGNOU opens it for your term-end cycle. Pay the Rs 500 project evaluation fee with your term-end examination form.

The proposal and the report go to different offices. The proposal goes to SOITS for approval. The report goes to the Students Evaluation Division for evaluation. Mixing the two addresses is a common way to lose weeks.

Hard copy by post

Post the bound report to the Registrar (SED) address above, with the approved proforma, proposal and bio-data bound in, not loose. Use a trackable service, write the course code MSDP 18 and your enrolment number clearly on the envelope, and keep the receipt and a complete photocopy of what you sent.

Online upload

IGNOU opens the SED portal cycle by cycle. The June 2025 SED instructions asked learners to make sure the proforma was approved in original, and that the synopsis, the guide’s bio-data and the originality certificate signed and dated by both student and guide were included. So the hard-copy documents still have to exist, signed, before you scan them into one file.

Fee and the December 2026 cycle

The Common Prospectus sets the project evaluation fee at Rs 300 for projects up to 4 credits and Rs 500 above 4 credits. MSDP 18 has 8 credits, so the fee is Rs 500, paid with the term-end examination form and not refundable. For the December 2026 term-end examination, IGNOU has opened project fee submission for ODL and online learners. The online-programme notice gives 30 November 2026 as the last date for the fee. Confirm the report deadline for your own mode in the current SED notice, because it is fixed afresh each cycle.

Ask About Printed Set Delivery

After Submission: The MSDP 18 Marks Scheme and the 25-Mark Viva

The MSDP 18 evaluation scheme on the MASS website gives 10 marks each to the introduction, literature review, methodology and conclusions, 30 marks to results and discussion, and 25 marks to the viva voce. The viva is built into the scheme, so prepare to defend your report.

Add the six rows and you get 95, not the 100 printed beneath them. The official page does not say where the other five marks sit. Do not guess. If it matters to your planning, ask the programme coordinator at [email protected].

The scheme still tells you where effort pays. Results and discussion carry almost a third of the marks, so tables without interpretation lose the most. The viva carries a quarter, so be ready to explain why you chose your locale and sample, how you collected data, what a table shows, and what your findings mean for sustainability in that place.

Mistakes on MASS Project Guides: Symptom, Cause, Fix

Most MSDP 18 delays trace to advice copied from generic IGNOU project guides: the proposal is posted to the wrong office, the bio-data is incomplete, or students plan around deadlines and formatting rules no MASS document states. The table below links each symptom to its cause and the fix.

Questions MASS Students Ask About MSDP 18

Can I email my MSDP 18 report instead of posting or uploading it?

The official MASS pages name two routes for the report: the Registrar (SED) address and the SED online portal. None of them offers email submission. Use [email protected] for academic questions, not as a submission channel, unless the coordinator tells you otherwise in writing.

Can I write my MASS project in Hindi?

The Common Prospectus gives English as the medium of instruction for MASS, and the MASS project pages publish no rule allowing another language for MSDP 18. Ask the programme coordinator before you plan a Hindi report.

Is MSDP 18 a dissertation?

IGNOU titles it Project Work. Some third-party sites call it a dissertation, but the course, the proforma and the evaluation scheme all use the word project. Whichever word you search, the rules on this page apply.

When should I start my MSDP 18 project?

MSDP 18 sits in the second year of MASS. You can shortlist topics and identify a supervisor while finishing first-year courses, but fill the proforma and begin fieldwork only once you are registered for the second year and your proposal is approved.

Do I need a plagiarism report or ethics committee approval?

The official MASS pages ask for an Originality Certificate signed by you and your supervisor. They do not mention a plagiarism software report or ethics committee approval. If your study involves sensitive personal data, discuss consent with your supervisor.

Is the MASSOL project the same course?

How do I check my MSDP 18 status after submission?

Project and result status are published through IGNOU’s own status and grade card services. Allow time for the evaluation and the viva before you expect the grade card to update.
