IGNOU MA Sociology Programme Structure
The M.A. in Sociology programme is meant to deliver advanced sociological knowledge, views, and skills to a diverse group of learners, including those who live in rural and inaccessible places. It focuses on classical and advanced concepts and theories, research methods and perspectives, the state of sociology in India, education, migration, urbanisation, and issues affecting the development of the largest segment of the population in order to address emerging concerns in contemporary society. Against this backdrop, the programme aims to reflect on the following: the rapid processes of social transformation (caused by globalisation, ICT penetration, the expansion of new frontiers of knowledge, a paradigm shift in development strategy, the holocaust of global terrorism, the resurgence of local resistance to domination, and grassroots assertion of marginalised groups seeking a share of power and development);
In keeping with the university’s concept of ‘openness’ and flexibility, admission to the M.A. Sociology programme is open to graduates from a variety of disciplines, including those who have not previously studied Sociology at the graduate level. There is no entrance examination for admission.
Age: There is no limitation.
The Program may be completed in as little as two years and as much as five years.
IGNOU operates on a credit basis. To get an M.A. in Sociology, students must successfully complete 64 credits of coursework. These are distributed over a two-year period. Each year, students must choose 32 credits. Students earn one credit for every thirty hours of study. To finish an eight credit course, a student must invest around 240 hours of study. At the M.A. level, courses are typically eight, six, or four credits in length.
The program’s fee is payable on an annual basis. The first year’s price is Rs. 5600/-, while the second year’s fee is Rs. 5400/-.

MSO-001: Sociological Theories and Concepts
The primary objective of this course is to familiarise students with both fundamental and advanced sociological concepts and theories through the use of fundamental concepts. Each concept is initially defined in terms of its intellectual heritage. Following that, the encounters between these concepts and parallel, at times antagonistic discourses are described. Numerous theoretical perspectives are woven together to contextualise these concepts for the purpose of comprehending social realities. The primary objective in this case was not only to provide an interpretative and historical grasp of an idea or theory, but also to demonstrate the notion’s applicability in daily life.

MSO-002: Research Methodologies and Methods
The purpose of this course is to familiarise students with the principles of research methodology in order for them to grasp the nature of social reality issues in social research. It aims to provide learners with a conceptual grasp of research tools (methods) as well as the perspective or orientation (methodology) that controls research.
With the underlying assumption that different methods and techniques are required for different types of research topics, the first three Blocks (1 to 3) introduce the philosophical underpinnings of contemporary social research methodologies and sensitise learners to look critically at them in order to achieve conceptual clarity. The subsequent Blocks examine: a) research methodologies as a means of comprehending social phenomena; and b) tools and procedures for gathering, organising, and analysing the data gathered. Among other pedagogical tactics, this course will expose students to fieldwork in order to instil a spirit of inquiry through research.

The primary goal of this course is to foster a sociological understanding of development processes, to formulate a sociohistorical critique of existing processes, and to identify alternative development processes as they evolve through experience. The relevance of conventional developmental concepts and viewpoints is investigated, as is the emergence of alternative dimensions, conceptions, and practises, both in detail and in broad terms. Globalisation, paradigm shifts in development strategy, the emergence of civil society actors as development practitioners, and the resurgence of grass-roots advocacy for development processes have all been extensively examined from the perspectives of planners, practitioners, and the general public.

MSOE-001 Sociology of Education
Education, as a critical social institution, has an impact on the evolution and development of society and its many social processes. In turn, education as a process and institution has been shaped by micro- and macro-social forces. A sociological understanding of this institution and the processes that surround it must be made plain to postgraduate distant learners. Against this context, the course’s primary aims are as follows:
• to highlight the critical link between education and society.
• to conduct historical and comparative analyses of the educational process.
• to gain a sociological perspective on the structure, function, and dynamics of the educational institution.
• to instill a critical perspective in order to appreciate education’s role as a catalyst for societal change and growth.
• to comprehend the various challenges confronting education in recent years as a result of rapid social transformation, technological revolution, globalisation, liberalisation, state-led establishment of the WTO and GATS, and the emergence of religious fundamentalism throughout the world, among other factors.
After successfully completing this course, students should be able to analyse the dynamics of education from a sociological perspective, articulate their own critical perspective on education in their own societal context, and identify the challenges confronting the institution of education locally and globally. This course is divided into two volumes.
