IGNOU MTTM Project: MTTM 16 and MTTMP 119 Dissertation, Synopsis and Reference Sets

What is the IGNOU MTTM project, and is yours MTTM 16 or MTTMP 119?

The IGNOU MTTM project is the compulsory dissertation of the Master of Tourism and Travel Management. It carries two codes because the programme now runs in two versions: MTTM 16 belongs to the older MTTM, and MTTMP 119 (Dissertation Work) belongs to MTTM_NEW. Both are worth 8 credits, but they sit in different semesters.

The scheme you were admitted to decides your code; the topic has no bearing on it. The July 2026 Common Prospectus lists only MTTM_NEW for fresh admission, with MTTMP 119 in Semester IV. The School of Tourism and Hospitality Service Management (SOTHSM) still publishes 2026 assignment booklets for the older MTTM, and those booklets place MTTM 16 alongside the Semester III courses MTTM 9, MTTM 10 and MTTM 11. So a learner admitted before the new structure keeps writing MTTM 16, and a learner on MTTM_NEW writes MTTMP 119. Check the course list in your admission or re-registration record before you draft a single page.

One naming detail causes confusion in older material. From the July 2016 cycle the programme was renamed from MA (Tourism Management), MTM, to MTTM, which is why the official guide calls the course “MTM-16 (Now MTTM-16)”. A sample marked MTM-16 therefore belongs to the older MTTM line, never to MTTMP 119.

The timing difference matters more than it looks. An old-scheme learner meets the dissertation in the same semester as three theory courses, MTTM 9, MTTM 10 and MTTM 11. A new-scheme learner meets MTTM 113, the research methodology course, a semester before the dissertation, so the synopsis can be drafted as that course ends.

Two codes that are not your dissertation

MTTM 116 is a theory course with no link to the old dissertation, despite the similar number. In MTTM_NEW, MTTM 116 is Cultural Production and Heritage Management, a 4-credit Semester IV course. Likewise, MTTP 006 is the Anuvaad Pariyojana (translation project) of the PG Diploma in Translation run by the School of Translation Studies, so it has nothing to do with tourism even though the letters look close.

A reference dissertation is a model to study. Your own dissertation must carry your title, your supervisor, your data and your approval letter, and the declaration you sign on its first page says the work is your own. Use a set to see how an objective turns into a questionnaire, how a literature review narrows to a research gap, and how findings are tabulated before they are interpreted.

If you are on MTTMP 119, read a set for method and chapter logic only. IGNOU has not yet published a separate MTTMP 119 guide, so the MTTM 16 front matter (course code on the proforma, Annexure pages) may not match what your Programme Coordinator asks for. Confirm the format first.

How do you choose an MTTM dissertation topic you can actually finish?

Choose a tourism topic you can reach in person, narrow it to one place, one group and one question, and make sure it can be covered in 10,000 to 15,000 words, the length the MTTM 16 guide sets. The guide describes the dissertation as a preliminary form of research that you pursue yourself, from the first idea to the final report, with a supervisor guiding you.

The fastest source of workable topics is your own course list. Old-scheme learners have studied tourism markets (MTTM 9), tourism impacts (MTTM 10), planning and development (MTTM 11), product design (MTTM 12), tourism operations (MTTM 13), transport operations (MTTM 14) and MICE (MTTM 15 or MTTM 115). MTTM_NEW learners add digital marketing for tourism (MTTM 114), content creation (MTTM 111), heritage management (MTTM 116), innovation and entrepreneurship (MTTM 117) and destination management (MTTM 118). A topic that grows out of a course you have already answered assignments on is easier to defend in the literature review.

Turning a broad area into a dissertation title

Most catalogue titles on MTTM study-help sites name a broad area and stop there. “A study on the services of hotel industry” names a sector but no hotel, no guest group and no measurable question. A finishable version reads more like “Guest satisfaction with front office services in three budget hotels of Karol Bagh, New Delhi”. It fixes a location, a population and a variable, and it tells the supervisor at once what data you will collect.

Ask three questions of any title before it goes into the proposal. Can you visit the destination, hotel or agency, or reach its customers, within your semester? Is there enough published work to review, in journals, Ministry of Tourism statistics or state tourism reports? Can the answer be shown in tables and charts in Chapter 4? If any answer is no, narrow the title again.

Discuss your MTTM topic and synopsis

How do you write the MTTM synopsis within 1,000 words?

The MTTM 16 guide asks for a proposal (synopsis) of not more than 1,000 words, prepared in consultation with your supervisor. Among the details it asks for are a review of relevant literature that identifies the research gap, an outline of the research plan and methods, and a chapter outline with the content of each chapter.

A thousand words is tight, and students who write 3,000-word synopses from generic templates are writing to a different programme. Several study-help sites still advise 8 to 12 pages or 1,200 words for MTTM, which does not match the MTTM 16 guide. The split below is our suggested way to spend the limit. It is a planning aid; IGNOU does not prescribe a split, and your supervisor may shift it.

The budget does two jobs. It stops the literature review from swallowing the proposal, and it forces a methods paragraph long enough for the Programme Coordinator to see how the data will be collected. A proposal that names a sample size but not how respondents will be reached tends to come back with comments.

Annexure A goes on top, signed by your supervisor

The Dissertation Proposal Proforma at Annexure A of the MTTM 16 booklet must be the first, covering page of the proposal. It carries your programme code (MTTM), course code (MTTM-16), enrolment number, Regional Centre and full postal address, and your supervisor certifies the proposal on it. Prepare two copies of the proposal, preferably typed, as the guide asks. Send one and keep the other for your own file.

Who can supervise an IGNOU MTTM dissertation?

Your dissertation must be guided by a supervisor recognised by IGNOU, and the guide recognises all counsellors of the MTTM programme at the study centres. You may also take a supervisor from among university or college teachers or from the tourism industry, subject to conditions the guide lists; a supervisor from industry should hold the rank of Manager or above. If you choose your own supervisor rather than a study centre counsellor, read the guide’s separate instruction on what must accompany the proposal. The M.Phil, PhD and teaching-experience conditions quoted on some sites do not appear in the MTTM 16 guide passages we read.

Where the MTTM proposal goes

For MTTM 16, the signed proposal goes to the Programme Coordinator (MTTM), SOTHSM, Block 15, IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi. The guide also gives [email protected] as a contact. Advice to hand the synopsis to the study centre or the Regional Centre, which appears on several MTTM pages online, does not match the MTTM 16 guide. MTTMP 119 learners should ask the Programme Coordinator whether the same route applies to the new code, since no separate MTTMP 119 guide has been located.

Wait for the letter of approval before you start

The guide tells you to wait for your letter of approval of the proposal and to begin the dissertation only after the Programme Coordinator has approved it. Keep that letter safe and keep a photocopy: it has to be bound into the final report, and the guide says the University can return a dissertation submitted without it. Copies of the guide text circulating on study-help sites say approval should normally take no more than a month; we could not read that line in the official file ourselves, so treat it as an expectation rather than a fixed period.

If the proposal comes back

A proposal that is not approved returns with comments. The guide text as reproduced on study-help sites asks you to rework it in the correct format and resubmit it with a copy of the rejection letter carrying the Programme Coordinator’s remarks. Keep the rejected version: the comments are the clearest brief you will get for the second draft.

What does the MTTM 16 guide require in the final dissertation, and what is still unpublished for MTTMP 119?

Under the MTTM 16 guide, the final dissertation runs to 10,000 to 15,000 words or more depending on the topic, is prepared in English only, is submitted as a bound copy with the letter of proposal approval inside it, and is sent to an examiner for evaluation. Reports are evaluated only twice a year.

• Length: 10,000 to 15,000 words, or more if the topic needs it. Figures of 70 to 100 pages or 25,000 words quoted online are not from the MTTM 16 guide.
• Language: the guide instructs you to prepare the Dissertation Report in English only. MTTM_NEW is also offered in English medium.
• Front pages: Annexure B is the cover page, and Annexure C is the first page, which carries the dissertation title, your enrolment number, study centre code, Regional Centre and a declaration that the work is original.
• Title: the guide’s pre-submission checklist, as reproduced on study-help sites, asks for the same title as your approved proposal.
• Approval letter: the Programme Coordinator’s letter of approval is bound into the report.
• Where it goes: the guide directs the bound report to the Registrar, Student Evaluation Division (SED), IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi 110068. SED now also accepts final dissertations through its online project portal in each cycle.
• Evaluation: the dissertation is sent to an examiner, and dissertation reports are evaluated twice a year, in line with the June and December term-end cycles.

The 2017 guide also mentions a Rs 600 demand draft for a dissertation resubmitted after an unsuccessful attempt. That predates the current fee rule. Since the January 2023 admission cycle, IGNOU charges a project evaluation fee of Rs 500 for projects above 4 credits, paid with the term-end examination form, and the SED portal asks for a copy of the fee receipt with the report. If you are resubmitting, confirm the current procedure with SED before paying anything.

What MTTMP 119 learners can rely on today

For MTTMP 119, IGNOU has confirmed the code, the title Dissertation Work, 8 credits, placement in Semester IV and the Rs 500 evaluation fee. A dedicated MTTMP 119 guide with its own proposal limit, proforma and submission route had not been located as of 30 September 2026. Until one appears, do not assume every MTTM 16 annexure applies unchanged. Write to the Programme Coordinator (MTTM), whose name the July 2026 prospectus gives as Dr. Tangjakhombi Akoijam (011-29571756), and ask three things: which proforma to use, where the proposal goes, and whether the 1,000-word proposal and 10,000 to 15,000-word report limits carry over. Put the answer in writing in your file.

Submission dates and fee in one line

The last date moves every cycle. For the June 2026 term-end cycle, SED set 15 June 2026 as the last date for online submission of dissertations; the December 2026 date is notified separately on the IGNOU website. The Rs 500 fee is paid through the term-end examination form, so the dissertation code has to be included in that form. Questions MTTM students ask before starting the dissertation

Is MTTM 16 the same as MTTMP 119?

No. Both are 8-credit dissertations for the Master of Tourism and Travel Management, but MTTM 16 belongs to the older MTTM scheme and MTTMP 119 to MTTM_NEW. Your admission scheme decides which one you write, and the two should not be mixed on the proforma or the exam form.

Where can I read the MTTM 16 dissertation guide?

The official MTTM 16 Dissertation Guide (2017) is on eGyanKosh in the MTTM-16 Dissertation collection of SOTHSM. It contains the proposal proforma (Annexure A), the cover page (Annexure B) and the first page with the declaration (Annexure C).

Can I write the MTTM dissertation in Hindi?

The MTTM 16 guide says the Dissertation Report is to be prepared in English only, and MTTM_NEW is listed with English as its medium of instruction.

Is primary data compulsory for the MTTM project?

The guide passages we could read do not make primary data compulsory. They describe the dissertation as your own investigation of a tourism topic, so most supervisors expect some field evidence, such as tourist or staff surveys. Agree the data plan in your proposal.

Is there a viva for the MTTM dissertation?

The MTTM 16 guide passages available to us say the dissertation is sent to an examiner and do not describe a viva. The SED portal notes that viva-voce, where a faculty prescribes one, is arranged through the Regional Centre. Marks splits such as 70 and 30 quoted online could not be traced to an IGNOU document.

How long does MTTM synopsis approval take?

IGNOU does not publish a fixed period in the official text we could read. Copies of the guide text on study-help sites say about a month is normal. Do not start the full dissertation until the approval letter arrives.

Can I submit a reference dissertation from this page?

No. A reference set shows structure and method. IGNOU evaluates your own dissertation on your approved title, and the report must carry your declaration of originality and your supervisor’s approval.
