IGNOU MBAOM Project (MMPP-001): What You Are Actually Registering For

The IGNOU MBAOM project is MMPP-001, an eight-credit Project Report course placed in Semester 3 of the MBA (Operations Management) programme. It is not a separate operations-only project course. MBAOM students take the same MMPP-001 that runs across the other IGNOU MBA specialisations, and the operations element comes entirely from the topic you choose.

That distinction decides a lot. There is no MBAOM-specific project handbook to look for, no separate operations proforma, and no different submission address. What is specific to MBAOM is the subject area you declare, the kind of guide who is allowed to sign your proposal, and the operational data you will need to get out of a real organisation. MMPP-001 Is Shared Across Six MBA Programmes

MMPP-001 is the project course for MBA, MBAFM, MBAHM, MBAMM, MBAOM and MBF alike, so your MBAOM enrolment does not give you a different project code. The only genuine routing difference is between ODL students and MBA (Online) students, and that difference decides where your synopsis is submitted.

This matters because a great deal of MBAOM search traffic is students trying to work out whether they have the right code. If you are enrolled in MBAOM through the distance mode, you are an ODL student and everything in the MMPP-001 guidelines applies to you unchanged. If your enrolment is in MBAOL, the online MBA, you do not post anything at all.

One consequence is worth stating plainly. Because six programmes share MMPP-001, most published guidance about it is written for the general MBA student. Nothing in that guidance is wrong for MBAOM, but none of it tells an operations student which subject area to declare, which guide will be accepted, or which operational data to line up before writing. The rest of this page covers exactly those gaps.

Where MMPP-001 Sits in the MBAOM Course Structure

MBAOM runs 19 core MMPC courses, eight MMPO specialisation courses and the MMPP-001 project, and the project is registered in Semester 3. Each theory course carries four credits, so the eight-credit project accounts for a noticeable share of the programme on its own.

The Semester 3 placement has a practical consequence that catches people out. Semester 3 is not the last semester of MBAOM, so a student who plans to start the project only after finishing all coursework has already lost most of the working window. IGNOU states that the proposal should follow registration of MMPP-001 so that a student has roughly eight to nine months of working time before the fourth semester expires. Semester 3 also carries a higher programme fee than the other three semesters, at Rs 18,000 against Rs 16,000 each for Semesters 1, 2 and 4.

Read the table alongside the semester numbers and something useful appears. Four of the eight MMPO courses sit in Semester 3 with the project, and four sit in Semester 4, after the project has been registered. A topic anchored to MMPO-001, MMPO-002, MMPO-005 or MMPO-006 is one you are studying at the same time as you write. A topic anchored to MMPO-003, MMPO-004, MMPO-007 or MMPO-008 is one you will be writing about before you formally study it.

Anchor Your MBAOM Topic to a Specific MMPO Course

An MBAOM project reads far better when it is visibly built on one named specialisation course rather than on operations management in general. The evaluator is assessing whether you can apply multidisciplinary concepts and techniques to an organisational problem, and naming the underlying course gives your rationale something concrete to stand on.

The table below maps each MMPO course to the kind of MMPP-001 study it naturally supports and, more importantly, to the operational data you would have to obtain. The data column is the one to read first. In operations projects the data is almost always the constraint, not the concept.

Score Your MBAOM Topic Before You Write the Synopsis

Most MBAOM topics fail on data access rather than on subject matter, so score a candidate topic before you commit to it. Operational records are commercially sensitive in a way that survey data is not. A supply chain topic that reads well on paper collapses when the company declines to release its freight costs.

Score each criterion 0, 1 or 2, multiply by the weight, and add up. The maximum is 22. Do this for two or three candidate topics side by side, because the comparison is more informative than any single score. The weights are deliberately unequal: the first two criteria carry three times the influence of the last one, which reflects what actually stops operations projects.

How to Read Your Score

A score of 18 or above means the topic is ready to be developed into a synopsis. A score between 12 and 17 usually means the topic is sound but the boundary is too wide or the data source is not yet confirmed, so narrow the organisation or the period and score it again. Below 12, change the topic rather than trying to rescue it.

Two patterns show up repeatedly. A topic that scores well on measurability and course anchor but zero on data access is not a topic, it is a wish; the fix is to find a different organisation, not a different research design. A topic that scores well everywhere except boundary is almost always salvageable by replacing “the retail industry” with one named store, depot or plant and a stated twelve-month window.

What an MBAOM Student Writes in the Subject Area Box

On the Proforma for Approval of Project Proposal, an operations topic belongs under the subject area “Operations Management and Information System”. That is one of the six options the proforma recognises, alongside HRM and OB, Accounting and Finance, Marketing, Corporate Management, and Any Other.

The subject area is a small box and it is easy to fill it carelessly, but it is what routes your proposal to an evaluator with the right background. Writing “MBAOM” or “Operations” in that box describes your programme rather than your subject, and writing “Supply Chain Management” narrows it to something the proforma does not list. The instruction in the guidelines is to state the broad subject area on which the project work will be carried out, taking the cue from the topic itself. For a logistics, inventory, maintenance, quality, layout or MIS topic, that broad area is Operations Management and Information System.

Three other fields on the same proforma cause avoidable returns. The title you enter becomes binding, because the final report must carry the title the evaluator approved and no change is permitted at submission. The number of students the supervisor is currently guiding must be stated, because a guide may not supervise more than five students at any one time. And both signatures, yours and the supervisor’s, must carry dates.

Choosing a Guide Who Can Sign Off an Operations Topic

For an MBAOM project the guide must be qualified in operations specifically, not in management generally. The MMPP-001 guidelines give the example directly: a marketing topic needs a supervisor with five years of experience in marketing. Applied to MBAOM, an inventory or logistics topic needs a supervisor whose five years sit in operations.

There are four eligible routes. Management faculty in the School of Management Studies at headquarters. Approved academic counsellors of the Management Programme at study centres. Management faculty with five years of postgraduate teaching experience. Or professionals holding a master’s degree in management or an allied discipline with at least five years of experience in the relevant area. The guidelines add that guides are requested to restrict their supervision to their core specialisation area, which is the sentence MBAOM students should read most carefully.

Practical consequences follow. If you choose your own guide rather than an approved counsellor, a detailed bio-data signed in original by that guide must be enclosed with the synopsis, and it has to show qualifications, the awarding institution and year, and work experience in chronological order with contactable addresses. If the bio-data or the signed proforma is missing, the synopsis is not entertained at all. If the faculty does not approve your proposed guide, you change the guide and submit afresh, and that resubmission counts as a new proposal.

A working operations manager in your own organisation is often the strongest option for an MBAOM project, because the same person who can supervise the topic is frequently the person who can authorise access to the data. Score both together, not separately.

The Two Rs 500 Figures in the MMPP-001 Guidelines

Two different Rs 500 amounts appear in the MMPP-001 guidelines and they are not the same thing. One is the fee a student pays. The other is what the University pays the guide. Confusing them leads students to think they have already paid something they have not.

• Project fee payable by the student. University policy from the January 2023 admission cycle onwards sets examination, practical and project fees at Rs 500 per course. MMPP-001 is one course for registration purposes, so it attracts this fee once.
• Honorarium payable to the guide. IGNOU pays the project guide a token honorarium of Rs 500 for guiding the learner. This is paid by the University, not by you, and it is not a fee you arrange with your supervisor.

Programme fees are separate again. The MBAOM fee is Rs 16,000 per semester for Semesters 1, 2 and 4, and Rs 18,000 for Semester 3. Because fee arrangements change between admission cycles, confirm the current position for your own cycle with your Regional Centre rather than relying on any third-party page, including this one.

Where MBAOM Students Lose a Result Cycle

The single most common loss is treating 31 May and 30 November as submission deadlines. They are not deadlines. The MMPP-001 project report can be submitted at any time during the year. Those two dates are the boundaries that decide which result cycle your report falls into: a report submitted between 1 December and 31 May has its result declared with the June term-end examinations, and one submitted between 1 June and 30 November is declared with the December term-end examinations.

Three other timing traps are worth knowing before you start.

• The six-month window from registration. If your project proposal reaches the Regional Centre more than six months after you registered for MMPP-001, the Regional Centre does not hold itself responsible for disposing of it in time. Approval or non-approval is communicated in writing within two to three months of receipt, so a late proposal compresses everything that follows.
• Re-admission and enrolment numbers. The maximum duration of MBAOM is 48 months, not five years. If that duration expires you must seek re-admission before sending the synopsis, and an approval held against an old enrolment number has to be sought again on the new one. Skipping that step can mean the project report is not accepted.
• Stapled rather than bound documents. The approved proposal, the approved proforma and the guide’s bio-data must be bound into the report itself. The guidelines state that a project with a stapled proposal will not be accepted, and a report missing any of the four required documents is returned for compliance.

A viva-voce is not automatic. A student may be asked to appear for one only if the evaluator recommends it, and the student is intimated in that case.

MBAOM Project Questions

Is the MBAOM project code different from the general MBA project code?

No. MBAOM students take MMPP-001, the same project course as MBA, MBAFM, MBAHM, MBAMM and MBF students. The earlier code for the same course was MS-100. What differs between specialisations is the topic and the subject area declared on the proforma, not the course code.

Which semester is the MBAOM project in?

MMPP-001 is placed in Semester 3 of the MBAOM course structure. It is not a final-semester course, although a number of third-party pages describe it that way. Registering and proposing in Semester 3 is what gives you the working time IGNOU assumes you will need before the fourth semester expires.

What subject area should I write on the MMPP-001 proforma?

Operations Management and Information System. It is one of six subject areas the proforma recognises and it is the correct one for logistics, inventory, production, maintenance, quality and MIS topics. State the broad area rather than the narrow topic, and rather than your programme code.

Can my project guide be from a different specialisation?

The guidelines ask guides to restrict their supervision to their core specialisation area, and they require five years of experience in the relevant area for professional guides. For an MBAOM topic, that means an operations specialist. A guide from another specialisation is a real risk of non-approval, and non-approval of the guide requires a fresh proposal with the new guide’s signature.

How long should the MBAOM project report be?

About 50 to 60 double-spaced typed pages, not exceeding roughly 18,000 words excluding appendices and exhibits, with rational variation permitted on either side. It is submitted in A-4 size, typed in double space, as a bound volume.

Does the MMPP-001 report structure include an abstract?

No. The structure set out in the MMPP-001 guidelines runs from introduction and literature review, to research methodology, results and discussion, summary and conclusion, recommendations, limitations and directions for further research as optional, references, and annexures. An abstract is not among the listed sections, although several third-party pages state that it is.

What is the maximum duration of the MBAOM programme?

Minimum 24 months and maximum 48 months. Pages that state five years are wrong. If the maximum duration expires you need re-admission before sending the synopsis, and any approval held on the old enrolment number must be sought again on the new one.

Do I have to appear for a viva-voce?

Only if the evaluator recommends it. There is no automatic viva for every MBAOM student. Where one is recommended, the student is duly intimated.

Can I change my project title after approval?

No. The final project report must be on the title approved by the evaluator, and no changes can be made while submitting the final report. This is why the title on the proforma deserves more thought than it usually gets.

Where do I check the status of a submitted MMPP-001 report?

Report status queries go to the Assistant Registrar (SED), IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi 110068, at [email protected] or on 011-29571324 and 011-29571321. Quote the PR number allotted when the report was submitted. Proposal approval queries go to your own Regional Director instead.

How many students can one guide supervise at a time?

Five. A guide is not permitted to supervise more than five students for MMPP-001 at any given point of time, and the current number has to be declared on the proforma. Confirm this with a prospective guide before you build a topic around them.

Which MMPO course should my operations topic sit on?

Whichever one matches the data you can obtain. MMPO-005 and MMPO-006 suit supply chain and inventory studies, MMPO-003 suits process and layout studies, MMPO-007 suits maintenance and downtime studies, and MMPO-001 suits allocation and scheduling problems. Choose the anchor after you have confirmed the data, not before.
