An Overview of IGNOU MLIS Course (Master of Library and Information Sciences)

At the moment, over 136 universities in India provide Master’s degrees in library and information science. Due to the fact that each university’s annual intake is limited to 25 students, it is becoming increasingly difficult for those seeking higher degrees to gain entrance to the Programme. For individuals already employed, the issue becomes more acute, as obtaining the extended leave required to complete the Master’s Degree Programme is challenging.

To satisfy the country’s workforce requirements in the field of Library and Information Science and to assist personnel in advancing their professional development, IGNOU decided to introduce the Master’s Degree Programme in Library and Information Science via ‘Distance Mode’ in 1994. Due to advancements in Information Communication Technologies (ICTs), the appearance, functions, and services of libraries and information centres are evolving at a rapid rate.

Since the last few years, numerous information systems, networks, and programmes utilising ICT have been built. Taking into account this evolution of the subject and the Program’s constant growth in demand, it was amended in 2005 to keep pace with changing demands and circumstances.

Objectives & Scope of MLIS Course from IGNOU

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) established the Master’s Degree Programme in 1994 to give the essential skills and training to people aiming to higher positions in the country’s libraries and information centres. Since then, the discipline has undergone great changes in terms of information handling and organisation, management, and distribution. The advancement of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs), notably the Internet, has brought a new dimension to the processing of information and its accessibility. These developments have had an effect on the organisational structure of information institutions, systems, and programmes. To prepare library and information professionals for the changing landscape, the Program has been completely revised to facilitate professional development not only for those already employed in various types of libraries and information institutions, but also for those who wish to pursue library and information science as a profession and upgrade their knowledge and credentials. The updated curriculum consists of nine courses, seven of which are Core Courses. Six courses cover a variety of information-related topics, including the use of information communication technologies, library and information centre administration, and more. Additionally, the seventh core subject is dedicated to Project Work/Dissertation. Additionally, there are two Elective Courses that are aimed to impart specialised skills necessary for working in various types of libraries or for establishing specialisation in particular areas of the discipline. These elective courses must be chosen from the University’s six elective offerings.

Wherever necessary, the curriculum incorporates mandatory practical components aimed at exposing students to critical areas of information technology such as CD-ROM, online database searching, database design using readily available software packages such as CDS/ISIS, and Internet searching, among others. MLII-101, MLII-102, MLII-103, and MLII-104 all have a practical component. Details on the practical component’s organisation will be communicated to students by the coordinators of their local Study Centres. Each student is required to complete this practical component prior to completing the MLIS programme. Students enrolled in courses without a practical component are required to attend seminars in their respective fields.

Seminars are intended to develop students’ communication abilities and to provide opportunity for engaging group discussions. Students’ performance will be evaluated and grades assigned based on their presentation and participation in the seminar. Apart from practical projects and seminars, each course requires students to complete and submit one tutor marked assignment (TMA). Each student is required to attend and participate actively in all practicals and seminars. Submission of all work is required, and students must get a minimum passing grade of 40% on all tasks. It should be noted here that a candidate is only entitled to appear in the term-end examination if he or she meets all of the preceding standards without exception. Additionally, candidates should be aware that the MLIS programme is currently only offered in the English language.

A complete schedule of the Programme’s practical assignments and seminars will be provided in due course by the respective Programme-in-Charges (PICs). This information would be available through the Study Centre coordinators.

The full MLIS programme lasts one academic year. At the conclusion of an academic year, a student may sit for the yearly examinations in all eight courses in one sitting, as well as submit the project work/dissertation and finish the Programme. Additionally, the student may choose to take examinations in selected courses first and then appear for the remainder of the courses in a future examination. The MLIS programme has a maximum duration of four years.
