What Is the IGNOU MAMIDI Project (MDIP 001)?

The IGNOU MAMIDI project is MDIP 001 Project Work, the 8-credit, fourth-semester research course of the MA in Migration and Diaspora offered by the School of Interdisciplinary and Trans-disciplinary Studies (SOITS). The MDIP 001 project manual marks it out of 200, sets no assignment for it, and sends the final report to external examiners.

The course code turns up in three spellings. The Common Prospectus July 2026 and the project manual print MDIP 001, the IGNOU programme page prints MDIP-001, and the Samarth admission portal and the PGDMIDI table of the same prospectus print MDIP-1. All three are the same course. Keep it apart from MDI 001, Migration and Diaspora: Theory and Methodology, which is a 4-credit theory paper with its own term-end examination. The programme itself is officially the Master of Arts (Migration and Diaspora); the word “Studies” that many pages add is not part of the title. Sellers also call the course the MAMIDI dissertation, but IGNOU’s title for it is simply Project Work.

The facts below are the ones students most often get wrong, each traced to the IGNOU document it comes from.

Is MDIP 001 Compulsory for MAMIDI, and What About PGDMIDI Students?

For MAMIDI learners, the July 2026 prospectus places MDIP 001 in Semester IV as part of the 80 credits and names no substitute. PGDMIDI is different: diploma learners may take MDIE-001 Gender and Diaspora and MDIE-002 Diasporas in India, 4 credits each, in place of the 8-credit project. The project manual itself calls MDIP 001 an elective.

That one word causes most of the confusion. The manual appears to serve both programmes: its contact address is [email protected], and the MA is built in modules, so a learner who completes the first year becomes eligible for the PGDMIDI and lateral entry and exit are allowed. If you are an MA learner hoping to replace the project with electives, write to the programme coordinators before you plan around it, because nothing in the MA structure we read permits it. PGDMIDI learners who choose the project follow the same code and the same manual; their printed sets sit in the IGNOU PGDMIDI project hard copy category.

Where Do You Send the MAMIDI Synopsis? Not to Your Regional Centre

Send the MDIP 001 proposal to SOITS at IGNOU headquarters, not to your Regional Centre. The project manual gives two routes: a soft copy to [email protected], or a hard copy to Dr. Sadananda Sahoo, School of Interdisciplinary and Trans-disciplinary Studies, Block 15, IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi 110068. Approval comes before you start the project work.

This matters because most IGNOU project pages, and the SED portal’s generic wording, tell students to forward a synopsis to “the concerned School, Regional Centre”. For MBA and several other programmes the Regional Centre is right. For MDIP 001 the manual names only the School, so a proposal sent to a Regional Centre risks reaching an office that does not approve it. The manual names Dr. Sadananda Sahoo; the programme page now lists Prof. Sadananda Sahoo, Prof. Nandini Sinha Kapur and Prof. Shubhangi Vaidya as course coordinators. Keep a copy of what you send and the approval reply; the manual asks you to attach the approval to the finished report.

What the 1,200 to 1,500 word MDIP 001 proposal must contain

The manual caps the MDIP 001 proposal at 1,200 to 1,500 words, reference list included, and asks for eight parts in this order:

  1. Title page: your name, the programme and the proposed title.
  2. Topic statement: the subject area, why the topic matters and what your study adds.
  3. Research aims and objectives: with research questions where they suit the discipline.
  4. Review of the literature: brief, placing your study among current research.
  5. Study design: the theoretical approach you will use and why.
  6. Research methods: sources, methods, resources needed, and any ethical or safety issues.
  7. Tentative chapter outline: if you have one at this stage.
  8. References: in an academic referencing system; the manual gives APA examples.

Two details deserve attention. The methods section must name ethical or safety issues, which is not a formality when your respondents are trafficking survivors or migrant workers, the people MDI 009 and MDI 010 deal with. And the title page wording, “the degree programme to which you are applying”, is carried over from a university template; write MA in Migration and Diaspora (MAMIDI), MDIP 001 there.

The MDIP 001 approval form is one page

The manual’s “Approval of Research Project” form asks for the proposed title, two or three paragraphs on the project, place, date, your signature and your enrolment number. It has no box for a guide’s signature and asks for no guide bio-data, unlike the MBA proforma. The manual says you receive mentorship on the proposal once IGNOU approves the project work, and that you may also seek help from IGNOU faculty mentors at the New Delhi campus, by e-mail or face to face, to complete it.

Ask Which MDIP 001 Set Fits My Topic

IGNOU MAMIDI Project Topics: Can You Finish One From Your Desk?

Mostly, yes. The MDIP 001 manual suggests seven topic areas, from diaspora films and poetry to case studies of diaspora engagement, and says topics on archival work and return migration are to be encouraged. Five of the seven can be built from texts, films, archives and websites using content analysis, the first tool the manual describes.

The table sorts the manual’s areas by where the data actually lives, which is the question that decides whether a working learner finishes on time. The MAMIDI course column points to the course whose study material prepares you, using the course descriptions on the IGNOU programme page. The title shapes are examples written for this page, not IGNOU-approved titles.

Is fieldwork compulsory for the MAMIDI project?

No. Some guides say MDIP 001 needs primary data from migrants, but the MDIP 001 manual does not say that. It lists four tools: content analysis, case study, questionnaire and interview schedule. It notes that content analysis does not require the researcher to interact with the people studied, and it states that advanced statistical analysis is not expected unless you are already familiar with statistics. What the manual does test at topic stage is feasibility: whether the data can be collected in the time available, whether literature exists, and whether the cost is manageable.

Topics that drift outside migration and diaspora

Some MAMIDI topic lists online, including an earlier version of this page, carried titles on custodial human rights violations or rural banking. They have no migration or diaspora angle, and the manual’s stated purpose is to apply the knowledge of this programme’s own courses. If human rights is your real interest, MDI 009 Human Trafficking: An Overview and MDI 010 Law, Policies and Institutional Response to Human Trafficking and Migration give you a proper route in.

How Long Should the MAMIDI Project Report Be?

The MDIP 001 project manual sets no word limit and no page count for the final report; it fixes a length only for the proposal, 1,200 to 1,500 words. Figures repeated online, such as 7,000 to 10,000, 10,000 to 15,000 or 15,000 to 20,000 words, appear in neither the manual, the programme page nor the July 2026 prospectus.

One popular page even gives two different word counts for MDIP 001 in the same article. Treat any single number as somebody’s habit, not a rule. What the documents do fix is this: the report must follow the approved proposal, the approval must be attached, and the manual’s eight-part structure gives the natural chapter plan. A report that develops the approved topic statement, objectives, literature, design and methods into full chapters, followed by findings and references, will match what the examiner approved. If you want a length for your own study, ask your IGNOU mentor once the approval reply arrives and keep that e-mail with your papers.

What goes on the first page of the MDIP 001 report

If you upload, the SED portal requires these particulars on the first page of the single PDF: the title, your name, the programme code (MAMIDI), your enrolment number as printed on the ID card rather than the control number, your Regional Centre code, the course code (MDIP 001), and your mobile number and e-mail. The manual also includes a sample title page headed “Project Report MDIP 001”. A report not in order “will not be considered”, and the portal says no communication will be sent.

Printed MAMIDI Project or Online Upload: What Still Has to Exist on Paper?

Even in an online cycle, an MDIP 001 submission starts on paper. The SED portal asks for the original project report scanned into one PDF, approvals and signatures in place, plus a copy of the Rs 500 fee receipt. Separately, the MDIP 001 manual allows a hard copy of the report to be sent to SOITS, Block 15.

This table follows each document from the moment it exists to where it finally rests. It is built from two sources: the MDIP 001 manual and the June 2026 SED portal guidelines.

Posting to SOITS or uploading to the SED portal: which applies to you?

Both routes are printed in official documents, and they do not agree. The MDIP 001 manual, which is undated and gives a June 2021 portal link as its example, names an online project link or a hard copy to Dr. Sahoo at SOITS. Since then, the Student Evaluation Division has run an “online mode” portal in every term-end cycle we checked, from December 2022 to June 2026. The June 2026 portal closed on 15 June 2026 and states that reports received by e-mail are not considered. Before you post a bound copy, e-mail [email protected], ask which route applies to your cycle, and keep the reply. Whichever route it is, print the report, sign it, then scan it, so the paper original exists.

The Rs 500 MDIP 001 fee and the December 2026 dates

MDIP 001 carries 8 credits, so the project evaluation fee is Rs 500; the Rs 300 rate is only for projects up to 4 credits. The fee is paid with the term-end examination form and applies from the January 2023 admission cycle. For December 2026, SED announced on 18 September 2026 that project fee payment had opened on the Samarth portal, with a last date of 30 November 2026. As of 7 October 2026 we could not find the December 2026 report upload notice, so check the IGNOU announcements page. The extension to 31 October 2026 is an assignment notice and does not mention project reports. And 31 May and 30 November are not fixed deadlines: the June 2026 portal closed on 15 June.

What Is Inside the IGNOU MAMIDI Project Hard Copy Sets Below?

The products listed below this description are MDIP 001 reference sets: a sample proposal (synopsis) and a sample project report, or dissertation, on a migration or diaspora topic. Each product page states its format; MAMIDI project sample 5, for example, was listed on 7 October 2026 at Rs 249, as a PDF with a printed copy posted to you.

Each set shows what a finished MDIP 001 proposal and report look like in length, chapter order and referencing. A printed set suits a learner who reads better on paper, annotates in the margin and wants a finished report beside their own draft. The sets are prepared by Shri Chakradhar Publication Pvt. Ltd., a New Delhi publisher that has served IGNOU distance learners since 2010 with its own writers and printing press. They are study material. The manual expects your proposal to show that you can make an original contribution, so your MDIP 001 proposal and report must carry your own topic, sources and analysis.

Other Questions MAMIDI Students Ask About MDIP 001

Is there an assignment for MDIP 001?

No. The MDIP 001 manual states that assignments are set for all courses of the programme except MDIP 001 Project Work. Pages offering an “MDIP-001 assignment question paper” are listing something that does not exist; your evaluation for MDIP 001 rests on the project alone.

How is the MAMIDI project evaluated?

The manual says the MDIP 001 project is of 200 marks and that documents submitted by learners are evaluated by external examiner(s) in keeping with IGNOU norms. It publishes no marking criteria or mark split between chapters, so lists of “evaluation criteria” on other sites are their own suggestions.

Is there a viva for the MDIP 001 project?

The MDIP 001 manual does not describe one. The SED portal guidelines for June 2026 say a viva-voce of project reports is conducted under certain guidelines by the concerned faculties under the Regional Centre, and advise students to contact their Regional Centre. If you receive a viva notice, it will come through that route.

Can I revise my MAMIDI project after submission?

The manual has no resubmission procedure. On the SED portal, an incomplete submission is removed after the last date and must be uploaded again in the next session, and the University does not correspond about incomplete reports. So the time to fix the report is before you submit, not after.

Whom do I contact after submitting the report?

The SED guidelines direct queries about a submitted report to your Regional Centre’s e-mail or to the SED project section at [email protected]. Academic questions about MDIP 001 itself go to the programme coordinators at [email protected].

Research note: every procedural statement on this page was checked on 7 October 2026 against the documents listed above. The MAMIDI programme guide linked from the programme page is a scanned file that could not be read as text, so nothing here relies on it. The manual and the prospectus print different mobile numbers for the coordinators (9818602818 and 9818602718), so we suggest e-mail. Where a rule comes from an SED notice for a single cycle, the page says so; confirm the current cycle on ignou.ac.in before you act.
