What Is the IGNOU MAFCS Project (MFCP 005), and What Does This Hard Copy Category Hold?

The IGNOU MAFCS project is MFCP 005, an 8-credit course titled “Project Manual” in the first year of the MA in Folklore and Culture Studies. You write a term paper of about 20,000 words, in English, on one topic, and you begin only after the Programme Coordinator approves your synopsis. This category holds printed (hard copy) reference sets of an MFCP 005 synopsis and project report.

MAFCS is run by the School of Interdisciplinary and Trans-disciplinary Studies (SOITS). The July 2026 Common Prospectus lists 64 credits across two years: MFC 001 to MFC 004 at 6 credits each plus MFCP 005 at 8 credits in Year I, and MFC 006 to MFC 009 at 8 credits each in Year II. The IGNOU programme page shows the same course as “MFCP-005: Project Manual, Project (8 Credits), Yearly 1”, with a fee of Rs 7,500 per year plus a Rs 300 registration fee and a duration of 24 to 48 months. MFCP 005 is the only project course in the programme, and the MAFCS assignment booklets describe course 5 as “a project paper”, so no assignment is set for it.

What the MFCP 005 Project Manual asks for, in one list

  • Length: a term paper of approximately 20,000 words.
  • Scope: topics from Courses 1 to 4, plus flexible topics on the folk traditions of any part of the world.
  • Language: English.
  • Topic: any one topic from one of the four listed themes, with the theme and topic number written on the cover.
  • Approval first: a synopsis of about two pages goes to the Programme Coordinator; work starts after approval.
  • Guide: a local guide, either an Academic Counsellor of a study centre or another teacher with interest or expertise in folklore and culture studies.
  • Method: quantitative, qualitative, or a combination of both.

What Do You Get in a Printed IGNOU MAFCS Project Set?

Each printed IGNOU MAFCS project set is a reference copy of one complete MFCP 005 synopsis and one complete project report on a named folklore topic, posted to your address, with a PDF of the same material. It shows how an approved-style proposal turns into a full chapterised report. It is a model to study, not a document to submit.

The titles currently listed in this category are:

  1. A Study on Role of Folk Music in Kashmir
  2. Role of Folk and Theatre in Tourism Promotion of Kashmir
  3. Folk Arts of Kashmir: A Case Study of Bhand-Pather
  4. Folk Dance and Music in Rajasthan
  5. Handicrafts and Folk Musical Instruments of Punjab

Every set is listed with its price and title in the product grid on this page. A printed copy suits students who like to mark up chapter order, compare how a methodology chapter describes a sample, or check how a bibliography is laid out beside their own draft. Your own MFCP 005 report still needs your own approved topic, your own sources or field material, and your own writing. Shri Chakradhar Publication has served IGNOU distance learners since 2010 and prints these sets on its own press in Delhi.

IGNOU MAFCS Project Topics: The Four Themes and the Cover Code

The MFCP 005 manual lists project topics under four themes, each with lettered options, and the last option in every theme is an open case study or special report on the culture and folklore of any region. Whatever you choose, the theme and the topic letter must be printed on the cover of your MAFCS project report.

The four theme titles match the titles of MFC 001 to MFC 004, which is why the manual says the project covers Courses 1 to 4. The table summarises each theme’s topics and shows the letter of its open option.

Theme (cover label)Lettered topics in the manualMatching courseOpen option
Theme One: Conceptual Perspectives(a) Folklore Studies: its uniqueness and relevance in India; (b) Folklore Studies and the inter-disciplinary approach; (c) Palace Paradigm; (d) Sanskritization; (e) Archiving and Ethics; (f) Language Death and Language PreservationMFC 001(g)
Theme Two: Tradition, Identity and Cultural Production(a) identity formation in history; (b) tribe and identity formation in India; (c) politics and identity formation in recent times; (d) commodification of culture in India; (e) copyright and commodification of cultureMFC 002(f)
Theme Three: Cultural and Societal Transformation(a) any textual performance; (b) translation and the politics of language; (c) classifying a particular folklore into a genre; (d) any folk music and its role in its community; (e) any katha traditionMFC 003(f)
Theme Four: Tribe, Identity, Culture and Lore(a) an origin myth of an Indian tribe; (b) a nomadic tribe and its strategies of survival; (c) a tribe and electoral politics; (d) economic strategies of two tribes in one region; (e) a north east tribe and its Human Development IndexMFC 004(f)

Outside Theme One, every topic asks for a specific case: “a case study of”, “identify a tribe”, “any katha tradition”. A title that names one tradition, one community and one place fits this list far better than a broad survey of Indian folklore.

How the listed titles could map to a cover code

The codes below are our reading of how each title could be framed. The Programme Coordinator’s approval of your synopsis is what settles it.

  • Folk Dance and Music in Rajasthan: Theme Three (d) if the study centres on the music’s role in its community; otherwise Theme Three (f).
  • Folk Arts of Kashmir: A Case Study of Bhand-Pather: Theme Three (a) if read as a textual performance.
  • Role of Folk and Theatre in Tourism Promotion of Kashmir: Theme Two (d), because tourism use raises commodification of culture.
  • Handicrafts and Folk Musical Instruments of Punjab: Theme Two (d) if framed around markets; Theme Two (f) as a regional special report.
  • A Study on Role of Folk Music in Kashmir: Theme Three (d).

Is Fieldwork Compulsory for MFCP 005, or Can You Use Content Analysis?

Fieldwork is not compulsory for MFCP 005. The Project Manual accepts quantitative research, qualitative research, including content analysis of already collected or available material, or a combination of both. What changes with the method is the evidence your MAFCS project report must show.

The manual spends most of its methodology section explaining why folklore studies moved away from purely statistical models. It uses Propp’s formalist reading of Russian folktales as the example: later scholars argued that meaning depends on historical context, community, place, performance and text, so the parts of a folktale are better treated as variables. Qualitative work, the manual says, can draw on archival texts and manuscripts, oral traditions such as folktales, myths and proverbs, interviews that record memory, diaries, and reading a text “against the grain”.

  • If your MFCP 005 report rests on a survey, the manual asks you to give the details of the sampling and quantification methods with your findings. Its own example takes a population as the universe and treats a share of it as the sample, and it notes that a very small group may need to be covered in full.
  • If your MFCP 005 report rests on qualitative analysis, the manual asks for proper references and a bibliography as part of the findings or analysis.
  • If you combine methods, the manual allows it and says you will have flexible options in choosing the topic.

The manual names questionnaires, interview schedules and focussed group discussions (FGDs) as tools. It describes in-depth interview schedules of forty to fifty questions and interviews that can run from hours to days. For a performer or a tradition-bearer, that depth matters more than a large sample. Keeping a record of who agreed to be recorded, and on what terms, is good practice, and it fits the manual’s own topic on archiving and ethics.

Questions MAFCS Students Ask About the MFCP 005 Project

Is the MAFCS project the same as the MAFCS dissertation?

Yes. The manual says the project work “needs to be submitted in the form of a project report or dissertation”, and it gives the 20,000-word length for the “project report/dissertation”. The course code stays MFCP 005 whichever word you use.

Can I write the IGNOU MAFCS project in Hindi?

No. The Project Manual states that the medium of the term paper or project work should be English, and the Common Prospectus lists English as the medium of instruction for MAFCS.

Is there an assignment for MFC-005?

No. The MAFCS assignment booklets ask for one assignment for each course from MFC-001 to MFC-009, with MFC-005 described as “a project paper”. Course 5 is assessed through the project report alone.

I completed PGDFCS before 2021. What changes when I join MAFCS Year II?

The July 2026 Common Prospectus says students who completed the 30-credit PGDFCS between 2009 and 2020 and joined the second year of MAFCS are allotted a 2-credit “Translation of Folklore Coursework”, and need the Programme Coordinator’s email approval of the folk texts they translate. The programme page lists it as MFC-010 Translation work, 2 credits, Year 2.

Can I change my MAFCS project topic after approval?

The manual does not describe a topic change. Approval is given to the topic in your synopsis, so a new topic is safest treated as a fresh proposal. Write to the Programme Coordinator before you change anything.

Which referencing style should the MFCP 005 report use?

The manual does not name one. It asks for proper references and a bibliography, and its own reading list uses author, title, place, publisher and year. Pick one consistent style with your guide.

Can photographs and recordings go into the report?

The manual neither requires nor forbids them. Photographs of a performance or a craft are often clearest in an appendix, each with a caption giving place, date and the person’s consent. Transcribe any recording you quote.

Submitting the MFCP 005 Report: Fee, Online Portal and Hard Copy

For the December 2026 term-end cycle, IGNOU’s Student Evaluation Division notice of 18 September 2026 says project fees are paid through the Samarth portal by 30 November 2026. Project work above 4 credits carries Rs 500, so MFCP 005 at 8 credits falls in that band for learners admitted from the January 2023 cycle onwards.

The SED project portal guidelines read for this page (the June 2026 cycle) set these conditions for final project reports:

  • The project evaluation fee is paid with the term-end examination form. A copy of the fee receipt goes with the report, whether you submit a hard copy or upload it. A report without the fee is not considered for evaluation.
  • Online, one course is one PDF. The first page carries the report title, your name, programme code (MAFCS), enrolment number as on the ID card, Regional Centre code, course code (MFCP 005), mobile number and email.
  • Incomplete uploads are not evaluated and are removed after the last date. Reports sent by email are not considered.
  • The approved proforma, synopsis, guide bio-data and originality certificate are to be included “wherever applicable”. The MFCP 005 manual itself asks only for the synopsis and the local guide’s signed resume, so include whatever approval you received.
  • Viva-voce of project reports is conducted by faculty under the Regional Centre, according to the portal. The MFCP 005 manual does not mention a viva, so ask your Regional Centre.

Two points stay open. The portal address changes every cycle; the June 2026 portal closed on 15 June 2026, and we could not find a December 2026 portal link when we checked on 5 October 2026. Second, none of the MFCP 005 documents we read names a postal address for the final report. Confirm the address with SOITS or your Regional Centre before posting, and keep the postal receipt.

What a bound MFCP 005 volume should contain

This is the order we suggest for a printed MAFCS project report, built from what the manual and the portal ask for:

  1. Cover with title, name, enrolment number, MAFCS, MFCP 005, and the theme and topic number
  2. The approved synopsis, or the approval you received
  3. The local guide’s signed resume
  4. Copy of the project evaluation fee receipt
  5. Contents, then the chapters as set out in your Chapterization
  6. References and bibliography, then appendices such as questionnaires, interview schedules, transcripts and photographs

After submission, status and result checks are covered on our customised project service.

Who Can Be Your IGNOU MAFCS Project Guide?

Your MFCP 005 guide is a local guide you find yourself: an Academic Counsellor of a study centre, or any other teacher with interest or expertise in folklore and culture studies. IGNOU gives local guides academic credit, not payment. The guide’s resume, signed and stating readiness to guide you, goes with your synopsis.

The MFCP 005 manual sets no minimum degree, no years of experience and no cap on the number of students per guide. Other IGNOU project courses do set such limits, so do not carry those rules across from a friend’s MBA or MCom project. The test the manual applies is interest or expertise in folklore and culture studies. In practice, a teacher who knows the region, language or community you plan to study can help more than a senior academic in an unrelated field. The Programme Coordinator, not the guide, approves the proposal.

How to Write the MFCP 005 Synopsis: The Seven Headings in the Project Manual

The MFCP 005 synopsis is a proposal of about two pages under seven headings set by the manual: Introduction, Objectives, Methodology, Case Study, Data Analysis, Chapterization and Local Guide. It goes to the Programme Coordinator for approval, and the project starts only after approval arrives.

  1. Introduction: the basis of the study, its logic and its rationale.
  2. Objectives: the specific objectives of the study and its research point.
  3. Methodology: whether you use qualitative or quantitative data techniques.
  4. Case Study: justify the sampling procedure. Despite the heading’s name, this asks you to explain who or what you will study and why that sample.
  5. Data Analysis: describe the tool, such as the questionnaire, interview schedule or ranking schedule. This is a description of the instrument, not of results.
  6. Chapterization: the number and titles of the chapters.
  7. Local Guide: the guide’s resume, with signature and readiness to guide.

Two pages leaves room for about a paragraph per heading. The manual gives no word count for the synopsis and no prescribed front page. A short heading block with your name, enrolment number, MAFCS, MFCP 005, the proposed title and the theme and topic number makes the proposal easy to match to your file. The manual describes a review of literature as a section every research study carries, showing what earlier work found and how the new study adds to it. One short paragraph on earlier studies of your tradition does that job in a synopsis.

MFCP 005, MFCI 5 or MFC-005: Which Code Is on Your Document?

All three codes refer to the fifth course of IGNOU’s folklore programmes, but they come from different documents and years. MFCP 005 is the current MAFCS code at 8 credits. MFCI 5 is how the PGDFCS listing prints the course, at 6 credits. MFC-005 appears in the assignment booklets. If you are an MAFCS student, the code for your synopsis and report is MFCP 005.

The credit gap has a history. The prospectus describes the first year of MAFCS as PGDFCS at 32 credits, while its own PGDFCS listing still adds up to 30 with the project at 6. The MAFCS first year, with MFCP 005 at 8 credits, is the one that adds up to 32.

What the MFCP 005 Project Manual does not specify

The manual is silent on font, line spacing, margins, binding style, citation style, an abstract, a viva and a postal address for the final report. Its length line reads “20,000 words or …… pages of A4 size paper”, with the page count left blank. Figures such as 8,000 to 10,000 words, 10,000 to 15,000 words or 60 to 80 pages that circulate online do not come from the manual. Where the manual says nothing, follow your guide and any instruction from SOITS, and keep the 20,000-word target.

The 2009 contact details are out of date

The May 2009 manual asks students to post proposals to Dr. Nandini Sahu, then Reader in the Faculty of English and Programme Coordinator of PGDFCS, at a School of Humanities room in Maidan Garhi. The July 2026 Common Prospectus lists the MAFCS Programme Coordinators under SOITS: Prof. Nandini Sahu ([email protected], [email protected], 011-29572785) and Dr. Sadananda Sahoo ([email protected], 011-29573378). Use the current details, and ask whether SOITS wants the synopsis by email or by post this session.
