What Is the MCOP 1 Project in IGNOU M.Com?

MCOP 1 is the everyday name for MCOP-001: Project, the six credit research project in Semester 4 of the IGNOU Master of Commerce. You get a synopsis approved through your Regional Centre, then write and submit a dissertation of about 60 to 80 double spaced pages. IGNOU gives no study material for it, only a guide.

The same course turns up under five spellings. The IGNOU programme page and the official MCOP-001 guidelines write MCOP-001. The July 2026 Common Prospectus prints MCOP 001. Students and most websites shorten it to MCOP-01, MCOP 1 or MCOP1. All five mean one course. On your proforma, cover page and envelope, write MCOP-001, because that is the form the guidelines use.

MCOP-001 sits beside IBO-01 (International Business Environment) and IBO-06 (International Business Finance) in the fourth semester of the 80 credit M.Com. It applies to the ODL Master of Commerce (MCOM) and to M.Com Online (MCOMOL). This category holds MCOP-001 synopsis and project report reference sets in soft copy, arranged so you can pick one by subject area.

Is This MCOP 1 Category the Right One for You?

This category fits an IGNOU M.Com or M.Com Online learner who is registered for MCOP-001 and wants a soft copy synopsis or report set to study before writing. If you want a printed set, study a different programme, or need your project status, another page will serve you better.

People reach an MCOP 1 page for very different reasons. Find your situation in the left column:

MCOP-001 in Eleven Lines, Each Traced to an IGNOU Document

These are the MCOP-001 rules a student searching by course code most often needs, taken from the MCOP-001 guidelines, the July 2026 Common Prospectus, the IGNOU programme page and the Student Evaluation Division. Nothing here is a third-party estimate. Where a document is silent, the line says so.

Question Official position Source
Credits and semester 6 credits, Semester 4, M.Com and M.Com Online Guidelines; Prospectus 3.1
Study material None supplied; guidance comes from your guide Guidelines
When to start Prepare the synopsis from Semester 3 onwards Guidelines
Can work start before approval? No. Project work is taken up only on approval of the synopsis Guidelines
Synopsis goes to Regional Director of your own Regional Centre, envelope marked “MCOP-001”; MCOMOL through LMS Guidelines
Decision time Written approval or non-approval with a Project Proposal (PP) number within two to three months of receipt Guidelines
Guide load A guide may supervise up to five MCOP-001 students at a time, in their own area only Guidelines
Report length and style About 60 to 80 double spaced typed pages on A-4, rational variation permitted, APA referencing; no word count stated Guidelines
Report goes to One bound copy to the Registrar (SED), IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi 110068, envelope marked “PROJECT REPORT-MCOP-001”; a PR number is allotted; MCOMOL through LMS Guidelines
Project evaluation fee Rs 500 for project work above 4 credits, which covers MCOP-001; applies from the January 2023 admission cycle; not refundable SED fee portal; Prospectus
Final limit The report must be submitted within the maximum duration of the programme (four years), or evaluation is rejected Guidelines

Two figures near each other cause confusion. The Rs 500 above is the evaluation fee you pay. Annexure-III of the guidelines separately sets Rs 300 per student as your guide’s remuneration, claimed on a bill sent with the report in its own envelope.

How This MCOP 1 Page Was Checked, and by Whom

Written and reviewed by BK Sahni for Shri Chakradhar Publication Private Limited, which has served IGNOU distance learners since 2010 and runs its own printing press and writing team. Last reviewed: September 2026.

Every rule on this page was read from an IGNOU document during the September 2026 review: the MCOP-001 guidelines published by the Commerce Discipline of the School of Management Studies (Regional Centre Karnal copy, with Annexures I to III), the Common Prospectus July 2026, the IGNOU MCOMOL programme page, the SED project fee portal, the SED online project portal instructions, and the SED notification of 18 September 2026 on project fees. The questions answered below were drawn from what M.Com learners search under the course code. Where IGNOU documents are silent, the page says so rather than filling the gap.

Independent publisher. Shri Chakradhar Publication Private Limited is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or acting for Indira Gandhi National Open University. Course codes and programme names belong to IGNOU and are used only for identification. Fees, portal dates and arrangements change between sessions and can differ by Regional Centre, so confirm anything time-sensitive with your own Regional Centre.

MCOP 1 Project Claims You Will Read Online, Checked

Several figures repeated on MCOP 1 websites do not appear in any IGNOU document, and a few contradict one. The claims below were collected from pages ranking for MCOP 1 searches this month and checked against the official texts listed on this page.

Is MCOP 1 worth 6 to 8 credits?

No. MCOP-001 carries 6 credits. The guidelines call it “a six credit course in 4th semester”, the Common Prospectus lists “MCOP 001 Project 6”, and the IGNOU programme page shows Project (6 Credits). The 6 to 8 figure does not appear in any of them.

Must the MCOP 1 project be 15,000 to 20,000 words?

The MCOP-001 guidelines set no word count at all. They say the dissertation “may be about 60 to 80 double spaced typed pages” and that “rational variation is permissible”. Word counts such as 15,000 to 20,000, or 10,000 on 50 to 60 pages, come from other websites. Font name, font size and margins are not specified either; A-4, double spacing, a bound volume and APA referencing are.

Is the MCOP-001 report marked out of 150, with 50 marks for the viva?

No IGNOU document read for this page publishes a report and viva split for MCOP-001. The guidelines do not mention a viva. The SED online portal instructions say the viva for project reports is conducted under certain guidelines by the faculties concerned under the Regional Centre, and tell students to contact their Regional Centre. Treat any fixed split as unconfirmed unless your Regional Centre gives it in writing. For preparation, see our article on IGNOU MCOM project viva questions.

Are 31 March and 30 September the last dates for the MCOP 1 synopsis?

Those dates are not in the MCOP-001 guidelines. The guidelines set no calendar date for the synopsis. Your real limit is arithmetic: the maximum programme duration, minus the two to three months the Regional Centre may take to decide, minus the time you need to collect data and write.

Should the MCOP 1 report be handed in at the Study Centre or Regional Centre?

No. Only the synopsis goes to your Regional Director. The report goes to the Registrar (SED) at Maidan Garhi, or through the SED online portal when it is open for your cycle; MCOMOL learners use the LMS. The MCOP-001 hard copy page covers the physical routes in detail.

Can I change my MCOP 1 topic after approval if I give a reason?

The guidelines describe no route for changing an approved title. They say the final report “should necessarily be on the title approved by the evaluator” and that no changes can be made at submission. Changing your guide is described, and it counts as a new proposal on a fresh proforma. If your study has genuinely moved, ask your Regional Centre before you write, not after.

Can I submit a purchased MCOP 1 sample as my own project?

No. Before binding, you and your guide sign the Certificate of Originality in Annexure-II, and the guidelines say a plagiarised report is dealt with under the University’s policy. Use any sample, including those in this category, to study structure and presentation. Your topic, data, analysis and writing have to be your own.

Can I write the MCOP-001 project in Hindi?

The ODL M.Com is offered in English and Hindi medium, according to the Common Prospectus. M.Com Online (MCOMOL) is English medium only, according to its IGNOU programme page. The MCOP-001 guidelines do not state a language for the synopsis or report, so confirm with your Regional Centre and check that your guide can supervise in that language.

What happens if my four years end before I submit?

The guidelines say the report must be submitted within the maximum duration, or its evaluation is rejected. If your duration is over, you need re-admission before sending a synopsis, and an approval held on your old enrolment number has to be sought again on the new one, or the report may not be accepted.

Which Subject Area Should Your MCOP 1 Project Take? Build It on a Course You Have Already Studied

Choose the MCOP-001 subject area in which you already hold IGNOU study material. The M.Com courses you passed in Semesters 1 to 3 give you the theory for your literature review, the vocabulary for your objectives, and the statistical tools your methodology must justify. The table links each subject area on the Annexure-I proforma to those courses.

The guidelines let you pick any topic, preferably in Marketing, Finance, Human Resource, International Business, Accounting and Taxation, or a related emerging area, and the IGNOU programme page adds e-commerce and banking as examples. On the proforma you also tick a broad Subject Area: HRM and OB, Accounting and Finance, Operations Management and Information System, Marketing, Corporate Management, or Any Other. The course titles below are from the IGNOU programme page and the Common Prospectus.

Proforma subject area M.Com courses that already cover the theory Study type it suits best Data you must be able to get
Accounting and Finance MCO-05 Accounting for Managerial Decisions (financial statements, budgeting, standard costing); MCO-07 Financial Management (capital budgeting, working capital, ratio analysis, dividend policy) Case study of one organisation, or “any other research based work” on published figures Annual reports or financial statements for a fixed number of years
Marketing MCO-06 Marketing Management (consumer behaviour, segmentation, pricing, distribution, digital marketing); IBO-02 International Marketing Management Survey based field study Questionnaire responses from a respondent group you can actually reach
HRM and OB MCO-01 Organization Theory and Behavior (motivation, leadership, stress, culture, change) Survey based field study, or a case study inside one organisation Employee responses, usually with the organisation’s permission
Any Other: International Business IBO-01 International Business Environment; IBO-06 International Business Finance; MCO-15 India’s Foreign Trade and Investment Research based work on trends, or an inter-organisational comparison Published trade, exchange rate or company data over a defined period
Corporate Management MCO-23 Strategic Management; MCO-24 Business Ethics and CSR (governance, CSR, sustainability reporting) Inter-organisational comparison Published reports of a small, named set of companies
Banking or e-commerce (Accounting and Finance, Marketing, or Any Other, by angle) MCO-04 Business Environment (RBI, SEBI, IRDA and policy); MCO-06 for digital marketing; MCO-07 for bank finance Field survey of users, or comparison of selected banks or platforms User responses, or published performance figures
Operations Management and Information System The current M.Com course list has no dedicated operations course Choose it only if your work experience and your guide are in this area Process or system data from an organisation that will share it

Whatever the area, two courses carry the method. MCO-03 Research Methodology and Statistical Analysis covers research design, sampling, questionnaire design, scaling, hypothesis testing, chi-square and ANOVA. MCO-22 Quantitative Analysis for Managerial Applications covers correlation, regression, time series and index numbers. The synopsis must state the statistical tools you will use and their relevance to your objectives, so choose tools you have already met in these two courses.

The guide has to match too. The guidelines ask guides to supervise only in their own area, and the proforma records whether your guide is an IGNOU academic counsellor and for which courses. A finance title with a marketing specialist as guide is a mismatch an evaluator can see before reading a line of your synopsis.

Match your MCOP-001 subject area to your courses

MCOP-001 Fee and Report Dates for the December 2026 Cycle

A Student Evaluation Division notification dated 18 September 2026 says online payment of project fees for the December 2026 Term-End Examination has begun. The last date is 30 November 2026, payment is made only through your IGNOU Samarth Portal login, and no fee is accepted after the deadline. For MCOP-001 the fee is Rs 500.

The SED notification also asks learners to check that they are eligible for the course before paying, including valid registration and completion of the minimum period of study. Two older instructions still matter. The SED online portal for the June 2025 cycle stated that a report is not considered for evaluation if its fee was not paid, and that the fee receipt must be bound into the hard copy or uploaded with the online report. The MCOP-001 guidelines likewise list a copy of the fee payment receipt in the report checklist.

On timing, the guidelines allow the MCOP-001 report to be submitted at any time of year. A report reaching SED between 1 June and 30 November is declared with the December term-end results; one reaching SED between 1 December and 31 May is declared with the June results. Those are result windows, not submission deadlines. The SED online portal, when opened for a cycle, carries its own last date, accepts one scanned PDF per course, removes incomplete uploads after that date, and does not accept reports sent by email.

If your MCOP-001 registration depends on re-registration for the July 2026 session, IGNOU’s Student Registration Division extended that last date to 30 September 2026 with a Rs 200 late fee for all ODL and online programmes.

What an MCOP 1 Project PDF Set in This Category Contains

Each product in this category is a soft copy reference set for MCOP-001, supplied as a PDF: a sample synopsis (project proposal) and a sample project report (dissertation) on one topic. A download link is provided after payment. Sets are for studying structure, not for submission.

Read a set in this order and it answers the questions students most often ask about MCOP-001 paperwork:

  • The synopsis part shows how the seven synopsis components in the guidelines (introduction, rationale, literature review, objectives, research methodology, implications, limitations) fit on the page, and how a methodology ties each tool to an objective.
  • The report part shows the ten listed report components in sequence, including results in tabular or graphical form with interpretation, and recommendations, implications and limitations kept as separate parts.
  • The topic and subject area are stated in each product listing; check them against the subject area table above before you choose.

Some things no set can contain, because only you and IGNOU can produce them: your approved proforma and PP number, your guide’s bio-data signed in original, the Certificate of Originality signed and dated by you and your guide, your own fee receipt, and your own data. A report sent to SED without the required documents is returned for compliance under the guidelines, so plan for these alongside your writing.

If you want a printed and bound version to hold beside your own draft, use the MCOP-001 hard copy category instead.
