The IGNOU MBAMM Project is MMPP-001, an eight-credit project course that a Marketing Management student registers in Semester 3, not in the final semester. It is the same project course taken by MBA, MBAFM, MBAHM, MBAOM and MBF students, so the rules below come from one document: the School of Management Studies guidelines for MMPP-001. What changes for MBAMM is the subject area you declare, the kind of respondent you have to reach, and the fact that your marketing research course arrives a semester later than the project does.

This category holds reference project reports and synopses written on marketing topics, for students who want to see a completed MMPP-001 marketing study before drafting their own. If you already know what you need, the buttons below take you to the nearest categories.

Why the MBAMM project starts before your marketing research course does

MMPP-001 sits in Semester 3 of MBAMM, while MMPM-006 Marketing Research sits in Semester 4. A Marketing Management student therefore registers the project course, chooses a topic and drafts a questionnaire in the semester before the specialisation course on marketing research is taught. This is visible on the official MBAMM course structure and it is the single most useful thing to know when planning the project.

The course that does run alongside MMPP-001 is MMPC-015, Research Methodology for Management Decisions, which is a Semester 3 course covering research design, data collection and measurement, and data presentation and analysis. Treat MMPC-015 as the methodology reference you actually have in hand while writing the synopsis, and treat MMPM-006 as the course that will later deepen what you did rather than the one that teaches you how to do it.

The practical consequence is a sequencing decision. If you wait for MMPM-006 before beginning the project, you have pushed the synopsis into Semester 4, which cuts into the working time the guidelines assume you will have. The guidelines expect the proposal to reach the Regional Centre after MMPP-001 registration so that roughly eight to nine months of working time remain before the fourth semester expires.

MBAMM Semester 3 and Semester 4 courses, as officially listed

Semester 3 of MBAMM carries MMPC-015 Research Methodology for Management Decisions, MMPC-016 International Business Management, MMPM-001 Consumer Behaviour, MMPM-002 Sales Management, MMPM-003 Product and Brand Management, MMPM-005 Marketing of Services, and MMPP-001 itself. Semester 4 carries MMPC-017 Advanced Strategic Management, MMPC-018 Entrepreneurship, MMPC-020 Business Ethics and CSR, MMPM-004 International Marketing, MMPM-006 Marketing Research, MMPM-007 Integrated Marketing Communication, MMPM-008 Rural Marketing and MMPM-009 Retail Management.

One point needs checking against your own record rather than against any website. The official MBAMM listing shows nine MMPM specialisation courses across the two semesters, while the semester structure is built around four specialisation courses in Semester 3 and four in Semester 4. Confirm the exact eight you are required to take from your own re-registration form, and raise any mismatch with your Regional Centre before you pay.

Why Semester 3 costs more than the other three

The official MBAMM fee structure is Rs 66,000 for the full programme, charged as Rs 16,000 each for Semesters 1, 2 and 4 and Rs 18,000 for Semester 3. The difference is not an error. Semester 3 is where the eight credits of MMPP-001 are registered, on top of the other courses in that semester. Examination fees are not included in that structure and are set separately by the University.

The marketing topic narrowing funnel

Most rejected marketing proposals are not rejected for being wrong. They are rejected for being too wide to finish, because “a study of the marketing strategies of the FMCG sector” describes a research programme rather than a student project. The funnel below moves a broad marketing interest to a title one person can actually field, and it is built around the constraint that is specific to marketing: your evidence usually sits with customers you do not employ, not with a department that can hand you a file.

StageWhat you decide hereThe marketing constraint that bitesWorked example
1. Marketing areaWhich part of the marketing function you are studying: consumer behaviour, brand, channel, pricing, service quality, promotion or retail.Pick an area your guide is qualified in. The guidelines ask guides to supervise only inside their core specialisation, and a marketing topic needs a marketing supervisor.Service quality in retail banking.
2. PopulationExactly whose responses will answer the question: customers, non-customers, lapsed customers, channel partners or the sales force. You will not be given a customer list. Decide now whether you can reach these people through branch intercept, your own network, or a company that will introduce you.Savings account holders who have visited a branch in the last three months.
3. VariableThe one thing you are measuring, stated so that a questionnaire item can carry it.“Satisfaction” is not a variable until you say satisfaction with what. Split it into the dimensions you will actually put on the instrument.Perceived service quality across responsiveness, assurance and tangibles.
4. BoundaryThe geography, the organisation or the time window that makes the study finishable. One city or one cluster of branches is enough. A national claim needs a sample you cannot collect alone, and the evaluator can see that from the methodology.Selected public sector bank branches in one district.
5. TitleThe wording that goes on the proforma and later on the cover page of the report. The final report must carry the title the evaluator approved. No change is permitted at submission, so do not leave the title vague in the hope of narrowing it later.A study of perceived service quality among savings account holders of selected public sector bank branches in one district.

Run a candidate topic down all five stages before you show it to a guide. If you cannot complete Stage 2 with a sentence describing how you will physically reach those respondents, the topic is not ready, however good it sounds at Stage 1.

Matching a marketing question to the right study design

The MMPP-001 guidelines allow three kinds of study: a comprehensive case study of one organisation or a multifunctional problem within it, an inter-organisational study aimed at comparison, theory validation or a survey of management practices, and a field study, meaning an empirical study. Marketing questions do not distribute evenly across those three. The table below maps the question types that recur in MBAMM projects to the design that carries them and, more importantly, to who you must be able to reach.

If your question is aboutDesign that fitsWho you must actually reachWhat the methodology section has to settle
Why customers choose one brand over anotherField study, structured questionnaireBuyers of both brands, not only buyers of yoursHow the sample avoids being drawn entirely from one brand’s customers
Satisfaction with a service already usedField study, scaled instrumentCurrent users with recent experience of the serviceReliability and validity of the scale, which the report structure asks for by name
Whether a promotion or campaign workedComprehensive case study of one organisationSomeone inside the firm who can release campaign and sales recordsWhat internal data you have written permission to use and report
How two or more firms market differentlyInter-organisational studyComparable respondents at each firm, in comparable rolesWhy these particular organisations were chosen, which the guidelines require as a rationale
Whether a distribution channel is performingField study or case study, depending on accessDistributors, retailers or the field sales team, not end consumersWhether the channel members can speak to you without company clearance
Attitudes towards a product not yet launchedField study with an exploratory stage firstPeople in the intended target segmentHow stated intention is treated, since it is not the same evidence as behaviour

Two of these designs depend on a company saying yes. If your access to that company is informal, choose a design in the first two rows instead, where the respondent is a customer you can approach directly. Rewriting the design after a refusal costs far more time than choosing a reachable population at the start.

What the MBAMM synopsis must contain

The MMPP-001 guidelines set out five parts for the project proposal: an introduction giving brief background on the subject chosen, a rationale explaining why that topic was chosen, the objectives, the research methodology, and the limitations of the proposed project if any. Nothing else is listed as compulsory, and the guidelines do not prescribe a page count for the synopsis.

The methodology part is the one that carries the most weight, and it has named components. It must cover the research design, the nature and source of the data or information to be collected, the sample and sampling technique together with the rationale for the chosen organisation and the sample, the tools and techniques for data collection including details of the questionnaire and its relevance to the objectives, the method to be used for data collection, and the handling and analysis of data including the statistical tools and their relevance to the objectives.

Read the phrase “relevance with the objectives of the project” twice, because it appears against both the questionnaire and the statistical tools. For a marketing project this is where most weak synopses fail. If an objective asks you to compare two segments and no questionnaire item lets you sort respondents into those segments, the instrument does not serve the objective, and that gap is visible to an evaluator without any fieldwork being done.

Writing objectives that are not already assuming the answer

The guidelines state that objectives must be expressed in a neutral manner, without any implicit assumption about the findings of the research. The sample verbs given officially are to study, to explore, to analyse and to investigate. Marketing objectives are unusually prone to breaking this rule, because marketing language is naturally persuasive. An objective written as “to show how advertising increased brand loyalty” has already decided that it did. The neutral form is “to analyse the relationship between advertising exposure and brand loyalty”.

Who can sign as your guide for a marketing project

The MMPP-001 guidelines list four routes to guide eligibility, and any one of them is enough. A guide may be management faculty in the School of Management Studies at Headquarters, an approved academic counsellor of the Management Programme at a study centre, management faculty with five years of postgraduate teaching experience, or a professional holding a master’s degree in management or an allied discipline with at least five years of experience in the relevant area.

That last route carries a worked example in the guidelines themselves, and the example given is a marketing one: if you are taking up a marketing topic then the supervisor should have five years of experience in the marketing area after their master’s degree. Guides are also asked to restrict their supervision to their own core specialisation. A finance manager who is willing to sign is not, on the face of the guidelines, the right supervisor for a consumer behaviour study.

Two limits apply regardless of route. A guide may not supervise more than five MMPP-001 students at any one time, and the proforma asks the supervisor to state how many they are currently guiding. If your proposed guide is not an approved counsellor, a detailed bio-data signed in original is compulsory, and the guidelines are explicit that a proposal without it will not be entertained. The University pays the guide a token honorarium of Rs 500.

Ask which marketing reference project matches your topic

Where each MBAMM document goes

The two submissions in MMPP-001 go to two different offices, and mixing them up is a common and avoidable delay. The synopsis goes to the Regional Director of your own Regional Centre, with MMPP-001 written prominently on the envelope. The project report goes to the Registrar (SED), IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi 110068, by registered post, speed post or by hand, with PROJECT REPORT-MMPP-001 written on the top of the envelope so that the Student Evaluation Division can sort it.

Send one copy of each and keep a copy yourself. The guidelines state plainly that the project report submitted to the University is not returned to the student after evaluation. For the address of your Regional Centre, the guidelines point you to the Student Handbook and Prospectus on the IGNOU website and to the Regional Network listing, rather than to any single fixed page.

What you get back, and when

When a complete proposal is accepted at the Regional Centre, a Project Proposal number is assigned, unique to you, and that PP number is what you quote in further correspondence with the Centre. Written communication about approval or non-approval is sent within two to three months of the proposal reaching the Regional Centre. When the report is submitted, a PR number is allotted, and that is the reference for any query to the Registrar (SED).

If the proposal is not approved, the evaluator’s comments come back with it. Resubmission needs the revised proposal, a fresh Project Proposal Proforma, and a copy of the rejected proposal and proforma carrying the evaluator’s comments and the allotted PP number. Changing the guide, whether by your choice or because the faculty did not approve the proposed one, means a new proforma signed by the new guide, and the whole thing is treated as a new proposal.

What the MBAMM project report has to contain

The report structure set by the guidelines has eight parts: an introduction to the project with a review of literature and brief details of the organisations under study; the research methodology; results and discussion presented in tabular or graphical format with interpretation given elaborately; summary and conclusion; recommendations; limitations and directions for further research, which are optional; references and bibliography; and annexures or appendices including the questionnaire used.

Note two things marketing students frequently get wrong because third-party pages state them incorrectly. There is no abstract in the official structure. The signed document required at the front is a Certificate of Originality, signed and dated by both the student and the guide, and the wording is printed in the guidelines for you to reproduce. A certificate of authenticity is not the name IGNOU uses.

Four documents must be bound into the report, not stapled to it: the approved project proposal, the approved proforma, the bio-data of the guide, and the Certificate of Originality. The guidelines state that a report received without any of these is returned to the student for compliance, and that a project with a stapled proposal will not be accepted. The cover page carries your name, enrolment number, the guide’s name and the title, and the table of contents must list page numbers that match the numbering inside.

The paperwork problems that send reports back

Three recurring ones are worth naming because each is fixable in an afternoon. A bio-data that is photocopied rather than signed in original will not be accepted. A proforma that is not signed and dated by both the student and the supervisor will not be accepted. And if your approval was granted on an earlier enrolment number and you have since taken re-admission, the approval has to be sought again on the new enrolment number, or the project report may not be accepted at submission.

When the MBAMM project result is declared

The report may be submitted at any time during the year. The two dates people quote are result windows, not deadlines. A report submitted between 1 December and 31 May has its result declared with the June term-end examinations, and a report submitted between 1 June and 30 November has its result declared with the December term-end examinations. A viva-voce is held only if the evaluator recommends one, in which case the student is duly intimated.

What is inside this IGNOU MBAMM Project category

This category holds reference project reports and synopses on marketing topics, written to the MMPP-001 structure, supplied as soft copies. Students use them the way you would use a worked example: to see how objectives are phrased neutrally, how a questionnaire is set out in the annexure, how results are tabulated, and how interpretation is written at the length the guidelines describe as elaborate.

They are reference material, not submission material. IGNOU does not accept a project that has already been submitted by another student, so a report from this category is something to learn the shape from, not something to copy. If what you need is a study designed around your own organisation and your own data, that is a different service and it is linked lower down this page.

Choosing between the soft copy and the printed set

The titles in this category are delivered as soft copies. The same marketing reference material in printed and posted form sits in the IGNOU MBA Marketing Project hard copy category. Choose the soft copy if you want to read and work from it on screen while drafting, and the printed set if you prefer to mark up a physical document while assembling your own.

Other MBA specialisation project categories

If you are on a different specialisation, or you are comparing how a topic would be framed in another area, the sibling categories are below. All of them register the same MMPP-001 project course.

IGNOU MBAMM Project questions students ask

Is the IGNOU MBAMM project the same as MMPP-001?

Yes. MBAMM is the programme, the MBA in Marketing Management, and MMPP-001 is the project course inside it. The same course is registered by MBA, MBAFM, MBAHM, MBAOM and MBF learners. There is no separate marketing-only project course code.

Is MS-100 still the code for the MBA marketing project?

MS-100 is the earlier code and MMPP-001 is the current one. The guidelines refer to the project course as “earlier MS-100 and revised MMPP-001” on the proforma instructions. Write MMPP-001 on your envelope and proforma. If a page or a seller is still quoting MS-100 as current, the material behind it may predate the revision.

Which semester is the MBAMM project in?

Semester 3. The official MBAMM course listing places MMPP-001 in Semester 3, alongside MMPC-015, MMPC-016 and four MMPM specialisation courses. It is not a final-semester course, although many third-party pages describe it that way.

Do I have to submit the MBAMM project report online?

Not if you are an ODL learner. The guidelines direct ODL students of MBAMM to submit one typed copy in A-4 size, in a bound volume, to the Registrar (SED) by registered post, speed post or by hand. Only MBA (Online) learners submit through the LMS portal. There is no requirement in the guidelines to send both a printed and a digital copy.

Does the MBAMM synopsis need to be eight to twelve pages?

No page count for the synopsis appears in the MMPP-001 guidelines. What the guidelines specify is content: introduction, rationale, objectives, research methodology and limitations, with the methodology broken into named components. Write what those five parts require rather than writing to a page target someone else invented.

Can my marketing project be on a company where I do not work?

Yes, and most marketing field studies are. The design question is not employment but access to respondents. If your evidence comes from customers you can approach directly, you do not need an employment relationship at all. If it comes from internal campaign or sales records, you need someone inside who can release them.

How long does MBAMM synopsis approval take?

Written communication about approval or non-approval is sent within two to three months of the proposal reaching the Regional Centre. If the proposal arrives more than six months after MMPP-001 registration, the guidelines state that the Regional Centre does not hold itself responsible for timely disposal.

What subject area do I write on the MBAMM proforma?

Marketing. The proforma asks for the broad subject area of the project work, and the areas listed in the guidelines are HRM and OB, Accounting and Finance, Operations Management and Information System, Marketing, Corporate Management, and Any Other. A consumer behaviour, brand, retail or promotion study belongs under Marketing.

Can I change my MBAMM project title before submitting the report?

No. The guidelines state that the final project report must be on the title approved by the evaluator and that no changes may be made while submitting it. If the study has genuinely moved away from the approved title, talk to your Regional Centre rather than submitting under a different name.

Is a viva compulsory for the MBAMM project?

No. A student may be asked to appear for a viva-voce if the evaluator recommends it, and in that case the student is duly intimated. It is not a standard step for every MMPP-001 submission.

What does the MBAMM project cost?

University policy states that examination, practical and project fees from the January 2023 admission cycle onwards are Rs 500 per course. That is separate from the Rs 500 token honorarium the University pays your guide. Confirm the current amount and the payment route for your session with your Regional Centre before paying anything.

Will I get my MBAMM project report back after evaluation?

No. The guidelines state that the project report submitted to the University is not returned after evaluation, which is why they also tell you to send one copy and retain one. Keep a complete copy including the annexed questionnaire, since you may need it if a viva is called.

Can I use a reference project report from this category as my submission?

No. IGNOU does not accept a project already submitted by another student, and the report must be your own original work with a Certificate of Originality signed by you and your guide. The material here is for seeing how a completed MMPP-001 marketing study is structured. Where plagiarism is found, action follows the University’s own policy.

Who do I contact about my MBAMM project status?

For proposal approval, the Regional Director of your own Regional Centre. For the status of a submitted project report, the Assistant Registrar (SED), IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi 110068, at [email protected] or on 011-29571324 and 011-29571321. Quote your PP number for proposal queries and your PR number for report queries.
