IGNOU MBAHM Project: What MMPP-001 Is and Who Has to Do It

The IGNOU MBAHM project is MMPP-001, an eight-credit Project Course that sits in Semester 3 of the MBA (Human Resources Management) programme. It is compulsory. You cannot take up the project work until your synopsis has been approved in writing, and IGNOU supplies no study material for MMPP-001.

This page is for MBAHM students who are about to select a topic, find a guide, prepare the synopsis or assemble the final report. It is also for students who registered under the older MBA structure and are still working under the earlier project code MS-100. Everything procedural below is taken from the School of Management Studies MMPP-001 guidelines and the official MBAHM programme page, both linked at the end.

MBAHM students, general MBA students and MBF students all do the same project course. MMPP-001 applies to ODL learners of MBA, MBAFM, MBAHM, MBAMM, MBAOM and MBF. What changes between them is not the procedure but the subject area you declare and the specialisation your topic and your guide are expected to sit in.

Where MMPP-001 Sits in the MBAHM Structure

MMPP-001 is listed in Semester 3 of MBAHM, not in the final semester. A large number of guidance pages describe the IGNOU MBA project as a fourth-semester capstone. The official MBAHM course structure places the eight-credit Project Report course in Semester 3, alongside MMPC-015 Research Methodology for Management Decisions and MMPC-016 International Business Management.

That placement matters for planning. IGNOU states that the proposal should reach the Regional Centre after registration of MMPP-001, so that a learner has roughly eight to nine months of working time before the fourth semester expires. Semester 3 is also the semester with the higher fee slab in MBAHM, at Rs 18,000 against Rs 16,000 for the other three semesters, on a full programme fee of Rs 66,000. Treating the project as something that begins in the final semester compresses a nine-month task into whatever is left.

One further timing rule is easy to miss. If your project proposal reaches the Regional Centre more than six months after you registered for MMPP-001, the Regional Centre does not hold itself responsible for disposing of it in time.

Matching Your MMPH Specialisation Courses to an MMPP-001 Topic

The strongest MBAHM topics come out of the specialisation courses you have already studied, because you already hold the constructs, the vocabulary and the measurement instruments. The table below maps each MMPH course in the official MBAHM structure to what it equips you to measure and to the shape a workable project title tends to take. Use it as a starting seam, not as a topic list to copy.

CourseSemesterWhat it equips you to studyShape of a workable title
MMPH-001 Organisational Theory and Design3Structure, centralisation, span of control, hybrid and contemporary designs, organisational effectivenessA study of the influence of [structural feature] on [effectiveness measure] in [one organisation]
MMPH-002 Human Resource Development3HRD systems, training design, transfer of learning, HRD climateA study of HRD climate and its relationship with [employee outcome] in [organisation]
MMPH-003 Human Resource Planning4Supply and demand forecasting, staffing gaps, attrition, successionAn analysis of attrition and its causes in [function or grade] at [organisation]
MMPH-004 Industrial and Employment Relations3Employer and employee relations, grievance machinery, collective bargaining, dispute settlementA study of grievance handling practices and employee perception in [organisation]
MMPH-005 Organisational Development and Change4Change types, OD interventions, resistance, evaluation of implemented changeA study of employee resistance to [named change] and the factors associated with it in [organisation]
MMPH-006 Organisational Dynamics4Role dynamics, role stress, power and politics, cross-cultural dynamicsA study of role stress among [defined group] in [organisation or sector]
MMPH-007 Compensation and Rewards Management3Pay structure, job evaluation, internal and external equity, incentives, benefitsA study of the reward system and employee perception of pay equity in [organisation]
MMPH-009 International Human Resource Management4International staffing, expatriate management, cross-border performance and compensation practiceA comparative study of [HR practice] across [two organisations or two country units]

Two notes on this table. The official MBAHM course listing does not display an MMPH-008 course, so check the specialisation courses printed on your own registration record rather than assuming a continuous run of codes. And a title built on a Semester 4 course is still permitted, since the project topic simply has to be preferably from your area of specialisation in MBA.

Choosing Between the Three Permitted Study Types

IGNOU permits exactly three forms of MMPP-001 study, and your choice should follow the access you actually have rather than the topic that sounds most impressive.

  • Comprehensive case study. One organisation, or a multifunctional problem inside it, with problem formulation, analysis and recommendations. Choose this when you have deep access to a single employer.
  • Inter-organisational study. Comparison between organisations, validation of theory, or a survey of management practices. Choose this when you can reach respondents in two or more organisations but only shallowly.
  • Field study. An empirical study. Choose this when your question is about a population of employees rather than about one firm’s systems.

Most MBAHM rejections that trace back to topic choice are access problems in disguise. A comparative study across four banks is only feasible if four sets of employees will actually complete your questionnaire.

Writing Objectives That Do Not Assume the Answer

IGNOU asks for objectives expressed in a neutral manner, without any implicit assumption about the findings of the research. The sample objectives in the guidelines all open with a neutral verb: to study, to explore, to analyse, to investigate. An objective phrased as “to prove that training improves retention” states a conclusion before any data exists. The same objective as “to analyse the relationship between training participation and retention” is acceptable and, in practice, easier to defend at evaluation.

What the MMPP-001 Synopsis Must Contain

The synopsis is the document that gets approved or rejected, so its contents are fixed by the guidelines rather than left to preference. A complete MMPP-001 project proposal contains five parts, and the methodology section carries the most weight.

  • Introduction. A brief background to the subject chosen for study.
  • Rationale. Why this particular topic has been chosen for the project work.
  • Objectives. Stated clearly and precisely, in behavioural terms, neutrally phrased.
  • Research methodology. Research design; nature and source of data; sample and sampling technique with the rationale for the chosen organisation and the chosen sample; tools and questionnaire with their relevance to the objectives; the method of data collection; and the statistical tools with their relevance to the objectives.
  • Limitations of the proposed project, if any.

For an HR study, the two lines most often left thin are the rationale for the chosen organisation and the relevance of the statistical tools to the objectives. If your objective is to compare perceptions across two employee grades, the proposal has to say which test will make that comparison. Naming a tool with no stated link to an objective is what evaluators read as an incomplete methodology.

Choosing a Guide for an MBAHM Project

Your guide has to satisfy one of four eligibility routes set by IGNOU, and for an HR topic the University expects an HR specialist. A guide who qualifies on paper but works in another function is a common cause of a proposal being sent back.

  • Management faculty in the School of Management Studies at Headquarters.
  • Approved academic counsellors of the Management Programme with relevant experience at study centres.
  • Management faculty with five years of postgraduate teaching experience.
  • Professionals holding a master’s degree in management or an allied discipline with at least five years of experience in the relevant area.

Three rules attach to this. A guide may not supervise more than five students at any point in time. Guides are asked to restrict their supervision to their core specialisation area, which for an MBAHM project means an HR or OB background rather than a general management one. And unless your guide is an approved counsellor, a detailed bio-data signed in original by the guide must travel with the synopsis. The University pays the guide a token honorarium of Rs 500 for guiding the learner, which is separate from the project fee you pay.

Filling the Proforma for Approval as an MBAHM Student

The Proforma for Approval of Project Proposal (MMPP-001) is a single page, and three of its fields decide whether your file moves forward. It must be signed and dated by both you and your supervisor before it is sent.

FieldWhat an MBAHM student enters
Enrolment No.Your current enrolment number. If your four-year maximum duration has ended and you have taken re-admission, approval held on the earlier enrolment number has to be sought afresh on the new one
Subject AreaThe broad area of your topic. The listed areas are HRM and OB, Accounting and Finance, Operations Management and Information System, Marketing, Corporate Management, and Any Other. An MBAHM topic normally falls under HRM and OB
Title of the ProjectThe final title. The submitted report must carry the title approved by the evaluator, with no changes at submission
Supervisor detailsName and address, preferably official. If the supervisor is an academic counsellor, the study centre and the courses counselled are to be given
No. of students being guidedThe count of students the supervisor is guiding for MMPP-001 as on that date, which must not exceed five

Submitting the Synopsis and What Happens Next

MBAHM synopses go to the Regional Director of your own Regional Centre, not to the School of Management Studies at Maidan Garhi. Send one copy of the proposal, the signed Proforma for Approval and the guide’s signed bio-data together, and keep a copy for yourself. Write MMPP-001 prominently on the envelope.

Once a complete proposal is accepted, the Regional Centre assigns a Project Proposal number, unique to you, which you quote in all later correspondence with the Centre. Written communication about approval or non-approval is sent within two to three months of the proposal reaching the Regional Centre. The synopsis itself may be submitted throughout the year, though the six-month rule after registration still applies.

If the proposal is not approved, the evaluator’s comments and suggestions come back to you. A resubmission is not simply the corrected document. It has to carry the revised proposal, a fresh Project Proposal Proforma, a copy of the rejected proposal and proforma bearing the evaluator’s comments, and the Project Proposal number already allotted. The same treatment applies if you change your guide, or if the faculty does not approve the guide you proposed: either case is handled as a new proposal on a new proforma.

Building the MMPP-001 Project Report

The report is written only after written approval of the synopsis has reached you. It runs to about 50 to 60 double spaced typed pages, not exceeding roughly 18,000 words excluding appendices and exhibits, with rational variation permitted on either side. It is submitted in original on A-4 size paper, typed in double space, as a bound volume.

The structure set out in the guidelines is: introduction to the project and review of literature with brief details of the organisations under study; research methodology, including research design, nature and source of data, sample and sampling method with rationale, details of the questionnaire and other tools with their purpose, the reliability and validity of the tools used, data collection and the statistical tools used for analysis; results and discussion presented in tabular or graphical form with elaborate interpretation; summary and conclusion; recommendations; limitations and directions for further research, which are optional; references and bibliography; and annexures including the questionnaire used.

Four items must be present in the bound volume itself. A cover page carrying your name, enrolment number, the guide’s name and the project title. A detailed table of contents with page numbers, matching pages that are actually numbered. The approved proposal, the approved proforma and the guide’s bio-data, bound into the report rather than stapled. And a Certificate of Originality signed and dated by you and your guide. A report received without any of these is returned for compliance.

Note what the guidelines do not specify: font, margins and referencing style are not stated as University requirements for MMPP-001. Nor is an abstract listed among the required sections. Where a website states a font size or a citation style as an IGNOU rule for this course, it is describing convention rather than a documented requirement.

Submitting the Report and When Your Result Appears

One typed copy of the MMPP-001 project report goes to the Registrar (SED), IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi 110068, by registered post, speed post or by hand. Mark the envelope “PROJECT REPORT-MMPP-001”. A PR number is allotted on submission, and that number is what you quote when you follow up with SED. The report will not be returned to you after evaluation, so keep your own copy.

The report may be submitted at any time during the year. The two calendar boundaries that circulate as deadlines are result windows, not submission dates. A report submitted between 1 December and 31 May has its result declared with the June term-end examinations. A report submitted between 1 June and 30 November has its result declared with the December term-end examinations. Missing 31 May does not close a door; it moves your result to the next declaration cycle.

On fees, the guidelines record that from the January 2023 admission cycle the University’s examination, practical and project fee is Rs 500 per course. That is a different amount from the Rs 500 token honorarium paid by the University to your guide, and the two are regularly confused. Confirm the amount payable for your own session and the current payment route with your Regional Centre before paying anything.

A viva-voce is held only if the evaluator recommends one, in which case you are duly intimated. It is not a standard step for every MMPP-001 student. Plagiarism in the report is dealt with under the University’s own policy.

Why MBAHM Project Files Get Returned: Symptom, Cause, Fix

Most MMPP-001 delays are documentary rather than academic. The table below works backwards from what a student actually sees to the rule behind it.

What you seeLikely causeWhat resolves it
Proposal returned without being evaluatedBio-data missing, or a photocopied rather than original signature, or the proforma undatedResend with the guide’s bio-data signed in original and both signatures dated

Guide not acceptedGuide outside the four eligibility routes, at the five-student ceiling, or outside the HR specialisationChange the guide and submit afresh on a new proforma. It is treated as a new proposal
No response for several monthsCommunication is sent within two to three months of receipt, and proposals arriving over six months after registration carry no timeliness assuranceFollow up with your own Regional Centre quoting the Project Proposal number

What This Category Gives You

The products listed on this page are ready reference materials for the MBAHM project: sample MMPP-001 synopsis and project report documents in HR subject areas, supplied so you can see how an approved-format proposal and a complete report are put together before you write your own. They are study references and format models, not documents to be submitted as your own work. IGNOU requires the synopsis to be original work done by the student and treats plagiarism under its own policy.

HR Subject Areas the Samples in This Category Cover

The reference documents here sit across the main HRM and OB seams that MBAHM students work in. The titles below indicate the ground each sample covers, using placeholder organisation names where the original study named a specific firm.

  • Impact of employee welfare policies on work performance, with reference to a public sector bank
  • Role of the training and development process for employees working in a named company
  • Job satisfaction as a function of job involvement and motivation in an IT organisation
  • Occupational stress among employees of government and private sector organisations in one city
  • Performance management system at a named company
  • Job involvement, sense of participation and job satisfaction among employees of a private bank
  • Recruitment and selection process in a named company
  • Performance appraisal methods compared across a public sector bank and a private sector bank

Read these as worked examples of how an HR question is narrowed to a finishable study. The title you submit has to be your own, approved on your own proforma, and IGNOU does not accept a project already submitted by another student.

Two practical points on how students use this category. If you want the same material posted to you as a printed and bound copy, use the IGNOU MBA HR project hard copy category instead of this one. If your specialisation is not HR, the IGNOU MBA project section lists the other specialisation categories. Study support for the taught MBAHM courses sits in the MMPC help books, MMPC solved assignments and MMPC guess papers sections.

Where a student needs a study written around a topic and an organisation of their own rather than a ready sample, that is handled through our customised project service on a separate site.

IGNOU MBAHM Project: Frequently Asked Questions

Is the IGNOU MBAHM project the same as the IGNOU MBA HR project?

In practice yes. MBAHM is the programme code for the MBA in Human Resources Management, and its project course is MMPP-001, the same project course taken by MBA, MBAFM, MBAMM, MBAOM and MBF learners. Students search for it as the MBA HR project and as the MBAHM project; both point to MMPP-001.

Which code do I write on the envelope, MMPP-001 or MS-100?

Write the code under which you are registered. MMPP-001 is the revised code and MS-100 is the earlier one for the same project course. The guidelines instruct that MMPP-001 is written prominently on the synopsis envelope and PROJECT REPORT-MMPP-001 on the report envelope.

How many credits is the MBAHM project worth?

Eight credits. The Project Course is equivalent to two courses, but for registration purposes MMPP-001 is treated as one eight-credit course. No study material is issued for it.

Does IGNOU accept an MMPP-001 synopsis by email?

The guidelines direct ODL students to send the proposal to the Regional Director of their own Regional Centre and note that Regional Centre email addresses are published on the IGNOU website for forwarding the proposal. Since Regional Centre practice varies, confirm the accepted route with your own Centre before sending. MBAOL learners submit through the LMS portal.

Can I start writing the report before approval comes?

The guidelines are explicit that project work may be undertaken after written communication of approval is received, and that only on approval of the synopsis could the project work actually be taken up. Preparatory reading is sensible; data collection before approval risks having to redo it if the evaluator changes your objectives or your sample.

Is a viva compulsory for the MBAHM project?

No. A student may be asked to appear for a viva-voce only if the evaluator recommends it, and is duly intimated in that case.

How many students can one guide supervise at a time?

Five. The proforma asks the supervisor to declare the number of students being guided for MMPP-001 as on that date, and guides are asked to keep it to five at any given point in time.

What is the Rs 500 figure I keep seeing?

It appears twice for different things. The guidelines record a University examination, practical and project fee of Rs 500 per course from the January 2023 admission cycle onwards, and separately a token honorarium of Rs 500 paid by the University to the project guide. Confirm what applies to your own session with your Regional Centre.

Is 31 May the last date to submit the MMPP-001 report?

No. The report can be submitted at any time in the year. A report submitted between 1 December and 31 May has its result declared with the June term-end examinations, and one submitted between 1 June and 30 November with the December term-end examinations. Those two dates are result windows.

My MBAHM maximum duration expired and I took re-admission. Does my old approval carry over?

Not automatically. If your synopsis was approved on the earlier enrolment number, approval has to be sought again on the new enrolment number. If it is not, the project report may not be accepted.

Can an MBAHM student do a marketing or finance topic?

The topic should preferably be from your area of specialisation in the MBA, and IGNOU asks guides to supervise only within their core specialisation. For an MBAHM learner that points to an HR or OB topic with an HR-qualified guide.

Do I have to collect primary data for an MBAHM project?

Not necessarily. The guidelines permit three study types, and only the field study is described as an empirical study. A comprehensive case study of one organisation and an inter-organisational study can both be built on existing records and documented practice. What the guidelines do require is that your synopsis states the nature and source of the data, the sample and sampling technique with a rationale, and the tools and their relevance to your objectives. Choose the study type that matches the access you actually have.

Can I change my MMPP-001 topic after the synopsis is approved?

Not at report stage. The guidelines state that the final project report must be on the title approved by the evaluator and that no changes can be made while submitting it. If your study genuinely has to move, that means a fresh project proposal on a new proforma rather than an amendment, and the fresh proposal goes back to your Regional Centre with the earlier Project Proposal number and the evaluator’s comments.

Can I get an extension for submitting the MBAHM project?

The MMPP-001 guidelines describe no extension mechanism. What the documents do describe is the four-year maximum duration of the programme and re-admission once it ends. If you take re-admission and your synopsis was approved on the earlier enrolment number, approval has to be sought again on the new enrolment number, or the project report may not be accepted. Take any question about running out of time to your Regional Centre as a re-admission question rather than an extension request.

Does the MMPP-001 report need an abstract?

The structure listed in the guidelines does not include an abstract. It runs from introduction and review of literature through methodology, results and discussion, summary and conclusion, recommendations, optional limitations and further research, references, and annexures.
