IGNOU MBAFM Project: what MMPP-001 asks of a finance specialisation student

The IGNOU MBAFM project is MMPP-001, an eight credit course placed in Semester 3 of the MBA in Financial Management. It is the same project course that every ODL MBA specialisation registers. What changes for an MBAFM student is not the procedure but the subject matter: IGNOU asks that the study be taken up preferably in your area of specialisation, which for MBAFM means finance.

This page is for students registered in MBAFM who need to choose a finance topic that can actually be completed, write a synopsis that survives evaluation, and find reference material while they do it. If you are still working out whether MMPP-001 is your project course at all, or you want the general submission procedure that applies to every MBA specialisation, the MMPP-001 project course page covers that ground and this page does not repeat it.

What IGNOU requires specifically of a finance specialisation project

Three requirements in the official MMPP-001 guidelines turn on your specialisation rather than on general procedure. They are easy to miss because most guidance written about the MBA project treats every specialisation identically. For an MBAFM student they decide who can sign your proforma and what you write in one particular box.

The specialisation preference is stated by the University, not invented by counsellors

The guidelines say the project study should be on a topic preferably from your area of specialisation. For MBAFM that word “preferably” matters. A finance topic is expected and is the safe choice, but the document does not bar an MBAFM student from a topic outside finance. What it does do is make an off-specialisation choice harder to defend, because your guide must then hold expertise in that other area instead. In practice the students who run into trouble are those who pick a marketing or HR flavoured question, then approach a finance counsellor to sign it. The evaluator sees a mismatch between the subject area, the title and the guide’s bio-data, and the proposal comes back.

Your guide has to be a finance specialist

The guidelines are explicit that guides should be active professionals in the relevant area of the selected topic, and give finance as the worked example: if the topic is in the area of finance, the supervisor should be a specialist in finance. Guides are separately asked to restrict their supervision to their own core specialisation. So a chartered accountant, a finance faculty member, or an approved Management Programme counsellor who teaches finance courses fits an MBAFM topic. A general management professional with no finance record is a weaker choice even if willing.

The eligibility routes themselves are unchanged from the general rules: School of Management Studies faculty at headquarters, approved academic counsellors of the Management Programme, management faculty with five years of postgraduate teaching, or professionals holding a master’s in management or an allied discipline with at least five years in the relevant area. A guide may hold no more than five students at any time, and IGNOU pays a token honorarium of Rs 500 for the supervision.

The Subject Area box on the proforma

The Proforma for Approval of Project Proposal has a Subject Area field, and the guidelines give a finance example for how to fill it: a project on the financial performance of a company takes the Subject Area “Finance”. The list the document offers is HRM and OB, Accounting and Finance, Operations Management and Information System, Marketing, Corporate Management, and Any Other. An MBAFM student writing on capital structure, working capital, valuation, portfolio behaviour, insurance or financial services should be entering Accounting and Finance, or Finance, in that box. Leaving it blank or writing the programme code instead is one of the avoidable reasons a proposal is treated as incomplete.

Ask which MBAFM reference report fits your topic

The data access test for an MBAFM project topic

Most MBAFM projects stall on data, not on writing. A finance topic that reads well in a synopsis can be impossible to finish if the numbers behind it sit inside a company that will not release them, or behind a subscription database an ODL student cannot buy. Test the topic before you write the proposal, not after approval.

Score your candidate topic on each row below. Award 0, 1 or 2 points, multiply by the weight, and add the six results. The scale is built so that the two data rows alone can sink a topic, which reflects how MBAFM projects actually fail.

How to read the score

The maximum is 26. A topic scoring 20 or above is workable and you can start drafting the synopsis. Between 13 and 19 the topic is not wrong, it is too wide or too dependent on a source you have not secured, so narrow the period or the sample and score it again. Below 13, and particularly where either data row scored zero, change the topic rather than the wording. Rewriting a title does not create a dataset. Students who ignore this and proceed anyway usually discover the problem four or five months in, after the synopsis has already been approved on a title they can no longer deliver, and the title cannot be changed at submission.

Where MBAFM project data actually comes from

The sources below are the ones an IGNOU distance student can realistically reach. The pattern to notice is that secondary sources are open and fast, while anything genuinely internal to a firm depends on you already having access through your employer.

Matching your MMPF specialisation courses to a project territory

The most reliable way for an MBAFM student to find a topic is to work backwards from the specialisation courses already studied. You have the theory, the vocabulary and a defensible answer when the evaluator asks why this area. The table maps each MMPF course to the kind of project it supports and, more usefully, to the data that project would require.

CourseSemProject territory it supportsData you would need
MMPF-001 Working Capital Management3Operating cycle, receivables, inventory and cash management in one firm or a small comparable setThree to five years of balance sheets and profit and loss statements
MMPF-002 Capital Investment and Financing Decisions3Capital structure, leverage, cost of capital, capital budgeting practicePublished financials, or a survey of finance managers on appraisal methods used
MMPF-003 Management Control Systems3Budgeting practice, responsibility centres, transfer pricing, performance measurementInterviews and internal documents. Usually feasible only inside your own employer
MMPF-004 Security Analysis and Portfolio Management4Risk and return behaviour, portfolio construction, valuation of listed securitiesExchange price series and published financials, largely free
MMPF-005 International Financial Management4Exchange rate exposure, foreign currency borrowing, cross border investment decisionsExchange rate series plus company disclosures on hedging
MMPF-006 Management of Financial Services3Mutual funds, merchant banking, credit rating, leasing, housing finance, factoringRegulator and industry body publications, plus a survey of users or intermediaries
MMPF-007 Equity Markets4Primary and secondary market behaviour, index construction, investment stylesExchange data and published market statistics
MMPF-011 Management of Insurance Services4Underwriting, distribution channels, health or motor insurance uptakeRegulator annual reports plus a survey of policyholders or agents

Two practical notes. MMPF-001, MMPF-002, MMPF-003 and MMPF-006 sit in Semester 3 alongside MMPP-001 itself, so those four are the courses you are studying while the project begins, which makes them the natural first place to look. MMPF-008 and MMPF-010 also appear in the MBAFM course structure; confirm their current credit weight and semester with your Regional Centre before you build a project around them.

Why finance topics get sent back

A non-approved proposal costs an MBAFM student two to three months, because that is the window in which the Regional Centre communicates its decision in writing. The three patterns below account for most of it, and all three are visible in the title before any research begins.

The single company performance study with nothing to test

A title of the form “A study on the financial performance of one named company” is the most common MBAFM proposal and the weakest. Restating five years of published ratios is description, not research. The fix is to add something the numbers can answer: compare the firm against a defined peer set, test whether performance changed around a specific event such as a merger or a policy change, or link a financial variable to an operating one. The data requirement barely moves and the study becomes defensible.

Objectives that assume the finding

The guidelines require objectives to be expressed in a neutral manner, without implicit assumptions about the findings of the research. In finance this slips in easily. “To show that the company has improved its liquidity” states the conclusion in advance. The official sample objectives use neutral verbs, and the first one given in the document is itself a finance objective: to study the financial performance. Keep to study, to explore, to analyse and to investigate, and let the analysis decide.

Titles with no boundary

“Portfolio management in India” or “Investors and mutual funds” cannot be finished because nothing tells you when to stop collecting. Every workable MBAFM title carries three things: what is being examined, in which population or set of firms, over what period. Adding the boundary usually converts an unapprovable title into an approvable one without changing the subject.

Discuss an MBAFM topic and its data needs

What the MBAFM synopsis has to contain

The synopsis, called the Project Proposal, needs five parts: introduction, rationale, objectives, research methodology and limitations. For a finance topic the methodology section is where most of the marking attention falls, because it is where you show the data actually exists.

The methodology has to cover the research design, the nature and source of the data, the sample and sampling technique together with the rationale for the chosen organisation and sample, the tools and questionnaire and their relevance to the objectives, the method of data collection, and the statistical tools with their relevance to the objectives. That last phrase is worth reading twice. It is not enough to list techniques. An MBAFM proposal that names regression without saying which objective the regression answers is incomplete on the document’s own terms.

Where a finance study rests on secondary data, say so plainly and name the source, the years and the number of firms. Where it rests on a questionnaire, state who the respondents are, how many, and how they were selected. Vague sampling is the second most common reason a finance proposal comes back after weak objectives.

Where each MBAFM document goes

The synopsis goes to the Regional Director of your own Regional Centre, not to the School of Management Studies at Maidan Garhi. This is stated for ODL students of MBA, MBAFM, MBAHM, MBAMM, MBAOM and MBF in the official guidelines, and a good deal of circulating advice on IGNOU finance projects still gives the headquarters address instead. Mark the envelope MMPP-001 and enclose the signed proforma and the guide’s signed bio-data with the proposal.

The completed project report goes to the Registrar (SED), IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi 110068, marked PROJECT REPORT-MMPP-001, as one bound A-4 copy in double space. MBAOL students, meaning those on the online MBA rather than MBAFM, use the LMS portal for both stages instead. The full stage by stage procedure, the documents that must be bound in, and the result window rules are set out on the MMPP-001 project course page, and the physical binding and despatch detail on the MMPP-001 hard copy page.

Two figures of Rs 500 that mean different things

The MMPP-001 guidelines carry the figure Rs 500 twice, in two unrelated contexts, and students regularly conflate them. One is the token honorarium the University pays your project guide for supervising you. The other is the University’s project fee position, stated in the same document as Rs 500 per course for examination, practical and project fees from the January 2023 admission cycle onwards. Neither is a payment you make to a guide. Fee arrangements change by session, so confirm the current figure and payment route with your Regional Centre before paying anything.

Reference reports, or a project built for you

The MBAFM reference reports and synopses on this page are completed finance projects supplied as study material. They are useful for seeing how a working capital study is structured, how a methodology section is written up, or how results are presented in tabular form with interpretation. They are reference examples, not submissions. IGNOU requires the report you submit to be your own original work, and the University acts on plagiarism under its own policy, so a purchased report should be read and learned from rather than copied.

Soft copy suits reading and adaptation. Hard copy suits students who want a bound physical example to work from, available on the MBA finance project hard copy category. If what you need instead is a study designed around your own organisation, data and approved title, that is handled through our customised project service rather than from this catalogue.

IGNOU MBAFM project questions

Is the IGNOU MBAFM project different from the general MBA project?

The course is the same. MBAFM students register MMPP-001, the same eight credit Semester 3 project course as MBA, MBAHM, MBAMM, MBAOM and MBF. What differs is the expected subject matter, since the guidelines ask for a topic preferably from your area of specialisation, and the guide’s expertise, which should be in finance for a finance topic.

Does my MBAFM project have to be on a finance topic?

The guidelines say preferably, not compulsorily. A finance topic is the expected and safer choice for an MBAFM student. If you go outside finance you will need a guide whose expertise matches that other area, and your Subject Area entry on the proforma must match the topic rather than your programme.

What do I write in the Subject Area box on the proforma?

Write the subject area of the topic, not the programme code. For most MBAFM projects that is Accounting and Finance, or Finance. The guidelines use exactly this example: a project on the financial performance of a company takes Finance as the Subject Area.

Can I use only secondary data for an MBAFM project?

Yes. The guidelines permit a comprehensive case study, an inter-organisational study or a field study, and the first two are routinely built on published financial data. What the methodology must do is name the source, the period and the sample, and explain why those statistical tools answer those objectives.

Which MMPF course should my project come from?

Working backwards from a course you have studied is the most defensible route. MMPF-001, MMPF-002, MMPF-003 and MMPF-006 sit in Semester 3 with the project itself, so they are usually the first place to look. The mapping table above sets out the project territory and data requirement for each.

Where does the MBAFM synopsis go?

To the Regional Director of your own Regional Centre, with MMPP-001 written on the envelope, enclosing the signed proforma and the guide’s signed bio-data. It does not go to the School of Management Studies at headquarters, despite what several third-party pages state.

How long does approval take for an MBAFM proposal?

Written communication on approval or non-approval is sent within two to three months of the Regional Centre receiving the proposal. Submitting it more than six months after registering MMPP-001 means the Regional Centre does not hold itself responsible for timely disposal.

Who can be my guide for an MBAFM project?

Any one of four routes qualifies: School of Management Studies faculty at headquarters, an approved academic counsellor of the Management Programme, management faculty with five years of postgraduate teaching, or a professional with a master’s in management or an allied discipline and at least five years in the relevant area. For a finance topic the guidelines expect that expertise to be in finance.

How long should the MBAFM project report be?

About 50 to 60 double spaced typed pages, not exceeding roughly 18,000 words excluding appendices and exhibits, with rational variation permitted on either side. Claims of 100 pages or more come from third-party pages, not from the guidelines.

Can I change my project title later?

No. The final report must carry the title approved by the evaluator, and no change may be made at submission. This is why the data feasibility check belongs before the synopsis rather than after approval.

Is a viva compulsory for the MBAFM project?

No. A viva-voce happens only if the evaluator recommends it, and the student is informed if that occurs.

Are the reports on this page approved by IGNOU?

No. They are independently produced reference material for study. IGNOU approves individual synopses submitted by individual students through the Regional Centre. Any report you submit must be your own original work.
