IGNOU MBF Project: what MMPP-001 actually asks of a Banking and Finance student

The IGNOU MBF Project is MMPP-001, an eight credit project course sitting in Semester 3 of the MBA (Banking and Finance) programme. It is worth two courses but is registered as one, and no study material is supplied for it. This page is for MBF students who have registered for MMPP-001 and now have to produce a synopsis and a project report against rules that most websites state incorrectly.

MMPP-001 is shared across six School of Management Studies programmes: MBA, MBAFM, MBAHM, MBAMM, MBAOM and MBF. The rules are identical for all six. What changes for MBF is the subject matter, the people who will guide you, and the kind of data a regulated financial institution will actually release. That is what this page is about.

MBF or MBAFM: check which programme code is on your enrolment

MBF and MBAFM are two different IGNOU programmes and students mix them up constantly. MBF is MBA (Banking and Finance) and its specialisation courses carry MMPB and MMPF codes. MBAFM is MBA (Financial Management) and its specialisation courses carry MMPF codes only. Both use the same project course, MMPP-001, so the procedure is identical, but the subject area you write on the proforma and the guide you choose should match the programme you are actually registered in.

The practical test takes ten seconds. Open your grade card or re-registration record and look at the specialisation course codes. If you see MMPB-001, MMPB-004 or MMPB-006, you are an MBF student and this is the right page. If you see only MMPF codes such as MMPF-002 or MMPF-004, you are an MBAFM student and the IGNOU MBAFM Project page is written for you.

Where MMPP-001 sits in the MBF course structure

MMPP-001 falls in the third semester of MBF, not the final one. The MBA (Banking and Finance) degree requires 28 courses carrying 116 credits in total: twenty core courses of four credits each, seven specialisation courses of four credits each, and the eight credit project course. Semester 3 is the heaviest semester because it carries the project, which is why its fee is higher than the other three.

MMPC-016 International Business Management

MMPB-001 Bank Financial Management
MMPB-004 Risk Management in Banks
MMPB-006 Corporate Governance in Banking and Financial Sector
MMPF-006 Management of Financial Services

MMPC-020 Business Ethics and CSR
Any three of: MMPB-002 International Banking Management, MMPB-003 Information Technology and Digital Banking, MMPB-005 Marketing of Financial Services, MMPF-011 Management of Insurance Services

MMPC-015 is worth paying attention to. It is the research methodology course and it sits in the same semester as the project. The sampling, scaling and questionnaire design material in MMPC-015 is the material an evaluator expects to see reflected in your MMPP-001 methodology section.

What JAIIB and CAIIB exempt you from, and what they do not

A JAIIB or CAIIB qualification from the Indian Institute of Banking and Finance can exempt you from up to five of the 28 MBF courses, but MMPP-001 is not one of them. No banking certification removes the project requirement. This matters because working bankers often assume their professional qualifications have covered the research component, and then discover in Semester 3 that the eight credit project is still sitting there.

The credit transfer scheme exists because MBF was set up under an arrangement between IGNOU and IIBF for in-service banking personnel. It applies only to IIBF subjects completed under the revised 2023 syllabus, and only within the maximum duration of the MBF programme. The mapping is fixed.

MMPB-003 Information Technology and Digital BankingInformation Technology and Digital Banking (CAIIB)
MMPB-004 Risk Management in BanksRisk Management (CAIIB)
MMPP-001 Project CourseNo exemption exists. The project must be done.

Two details are easy to miss. Credit transfer is applied for separately, by post, to the Registrar, Student Registration Division at Maidan Garhi, and there is no fee for seeking it although the full programme fee is still payable. And an exemption removes the assignment and the term-end examination for that course, which frees up time, but it does not shorten the eight to nine months IGNOU expects the project itself to take.

Deciding what your MBF project can realistically be

Most MBF project proposals fail on feasibility rather than on subject knowledge. A working banker writes a proposal about non-performing asset behaviour across a loan book, then discovers that the figures are internal, restricted, or simply not something a compliance function will let out of the building. The question to settle before you write a single line of the synopsis is not what interests you. It is what you can lawfully obtain.

Work down these four questions in order. Each answer narrows the study type IGNOU permits into something you can actually finish.

QuestionIf yesIf no
1. Do you currently work in a bank, NBFC, insurer or other regulated financial institution?Go to question 2.Go to question 4. Do not build a study that assumes access you do not have.
2. Can you obtain written permission from the institution to use internal figures in a document that leaves the organisation?A comprehensive case study on that one institution is open to you. Get the permission before the synopsis, not after.Go to question 3.
3. Can you reach people rather than figures, meaning branch staff, relationship managers or customers, in numbers large enough to survey?A field study on a behavioural or perception question. Your data is responses, not the balance sheet.Go to question 4.
4. Is your question a comparison between institutions, or a proposition you want to test?Comparison: an inter-organisational study built entirely on published annual reports and regulatory disclosures. Every figure is already public.Testing: a field study on a sample you can reach outside any single employer, such as customers of digital payment services.

This is practical guidance from watching where MBF proposals stall, not a University rule. IGNOU does not prescribe a route. What it does prescribe is that your methodology section must state the nature and source of your data and the rationale for your chosen organisation and sample. If you cannot answer question 2 honestly, that section will not hold up.

Discuss an MBF topic and its data source

The three study types IGNOU permits, read in banking terms

IGNOU allows exactly three shapes for an MMPP-001 project, and every approved MBF proposal is one of them. Naming yours correctly in the synopsis makes the evaluator’s job simpler.

  • Comprehensive case study. One organisation, or a multifunctional problem inside it, taken through problem formulation, analysis and recommendations. For MBF this usually means one bank, one NBFC or one insurer.
  • Inter-organisational study. Comparison between institutions, validation of a theory, or a survey of management practices. Public sector against private sector bank comparisons sit here, and they work because the data is published.
  • Field study. An empirical study. You collect primary data yourself through a questionnaire or structured interviews.

What the MMPP-001 synopsis must contain

The synopsis has five required parts: introduction, rationale, objectives, research methodology and limitations. The introduction gives brief background on the subject chosen. The rationale explains why this topic. The objectives state precisely what you expect to know at the end. The methodology and the limitations follow.

The methodology section carries the most weight and is where thin proposals are caught. IGNOU asks for the research design, the nature and source of the data, the sample and sampling technique together with a rationale for the chosen organisation and sample, the tools or questionnaire and their relevance to the objectives, the method of data collection, and the statistical tools with their relevance to the objectives. Relevance to the objectives is asked for twice, which tells you what the evaluator is checking.

Objectives must be expressed neutrally, with no implicit assumption about what you will find. The sample verbs in IGNOU’s own document are to study, to explore, to analyse and to investigate. An objective that begins “to prove that digital banking has improved customer satisfaction” has assumed its own finding and invites a rewrite.

On the proforma you also declare a subject area. The listed options are HRM and OB, Accounting and Finance, Operations Management and Information System, Marketing, Corporate Management, and Any Other. Most MBF topics sit under Accounting and Finance, though a study of digital banking adoption might legitimately be declared under Operations Management and Information System.

Who can guide an MBF project

A guide must satisfy one of four routes: management faculty in the School of Management Studies at headquarters; an approved Academic Counsellor of the Management Programme at a study centre; management faculty with five years of postgraduate teaching experience; or a professional holding a master’s degree in management or an allied discipline with at least five years of experience in the relevant area. A guide may not supervise more than five students at any one time.

For MBF this fourth route is the one most students use, and the relevant area clause bites. IGNOU asks guides to restrict themselves to their core specialisation, and gives the example of a finance topic needing a finance specialist. A senior colleague from the IT or operations side of your bank, however experienced, is not the right signature on a credit risk proposal. If the faculty does not approve your proposed guide, you must change guide and submit the proposal afresh, which is treated as an entirely new proposal.

Unless your guide is an approved counsellor, a detailed bio-data signed in original by the guide must be enclosed. It needs name and date of birth, full address and contact numbers for residence and current workplace, educational qualifications with specialisation, institution and year, and work experience in chronological order. A synopsis arriving without an originally signed bio-data and proforma is not entertained.

Where the MBF synopsis goes, and where the report goes

The synopsis and the project report go to two different offices, and sending the report to the wrong one is the single most expensive mistake on this course. A great many IGNOU MBF pages tell students to submit the project report to their Regional Centre or study centre. That is wrong for the report.

Project report, one bound copyThe Registrar (SED), IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi 110068, by registered post, speed post or by handPROJECT REPORT-MMPP-001

Send one copy of each and keep a copy yourself. A submitted report is not returned after evaluation. On acceptance of the synopsis the Regional Centre allots a Project Proposal number, and on receipt of the report the Student Evaluation Division allots a PR number that you should quote in any later correspondence. Only MBA (Online) students submit through the LMS portal. MBF is an ODL programme, so the postal route applies to you.

What the bound MMPP-001 report must contain

The report runs to eight sections in a fixed order: introduction with review of literature and details of the organisation under study; research methodology including reliability and validity of the tools used; results and discussion presented in tabular or graphical form with the interpretation given elaborately; summary and conclusion; recommendations; limitations and direction for further research, which is optional; references and bibliography; and annexures including the questionnaire used.

Four documents must be bound into the volume, not stapled to it: the approved project proposal, the approved proforma, the guide’s bio-data, and a Certificate of Originality signed and dated by both you and your guide. IGNOU states plainly that a report with a stapled proposal will not be accepted, and that a report arriving without any of these documents is returned to the student for compliance. The cover page carries your name, enrolment number, the guide’s name and the title, and the table of contents must show page numbers that match the numbering inside.

The title on the bound report must be the title the evaluator approved. No changes are permitted at submission. If your research drifted and the title no longer fits, that is a conversation to have with the Regional Centre before you bind, not after.

One point competitors state as an IGNOU requirement and is not: font, margin and referencing style. The MMPP-001 guidelines specify A-4 size, double spacing and a bound volume. They do not specify Times New Roman, a point size, a margin width or APA. Use a clean, consistent style, but do not believe a page that presents these as University rules.

When the result appears, and why there is no deadline

The MMPP-001 project report can be submitted at any time during the year. There is no last date, no late submission penalty and no extension mechanism, because none of those things exist for this course. What exists is a pair of result windows. A report submitted between 1 December and 31 May has its result declared with the June term-end examinations. A report submitted between 1 June and 30 November has its result declared with the December term-end examinations.

The timing rule that does carry a consequence sits earlier, at the synopsis. The project proposal should go to the Regional Centre after you register for MMPP-001, and if it arrives more than six months after registration the Regional Centre does not hold itself responsible for disposing of it in time. IGNOU’s stated reasoning is that you need roughly eight to nine months of working time before the fourth semester expires. Approval or non-approval is communicated in writing within two to three months of the proposal reaching the Regional Centre.

A viva-voce happens only if the evaluator recommends one, and you are intimated if that occurs. It is not a standard step for every MBF student.

Two different Rs 500 amounts in MMPP-001

Rs 500 appears twice in the MMPP-001 process and the two are unrelated. The first is the token honorarium the University pays to your project guide for supervising you. That is money going out from IGNOU, not something you pay. The second is the project evaluation fee of Rs 500 per course for courses above four credits, paid by you through the project and practical examination form on the IGNOU examination portal. MMPP-001 is eight credits, so the higher slab applies. Courses up to four credits attract Rs 300 instead.

Non-approval and resubmission

If the proposal is not approved, the evaluator’s comments and suggestions for reformulating it are sent to you. Resubmission then needs four things together: the revised proposal, a fresh Project Proposal Proforma, a copy of the rejected proposal and proforma carrying the evaluator’s comments, and the Project Proposal number allotted by the Regional Centre.

Proposals are also turned away for reasons that have nothing to do with the research. An unsigned or missing guide bio-data, a proforma not signed and dated by both parties, a proposal incomplete in any respect, or a guide already supervising five students will each stop a submission. And if your maximum four year duration has expired and you have taken re-admission, an approval held on the old enrolment number must be sought again on the new one, or the project report may not be accepted.

IGNOU MBF project reference material in this category

This category holds written reference material for the MMPP-001 project in the Banking and Finance specialisation: worked project reports and synopsis documents in soft copy covering topics such as comparative financial performance of public and private sector banks, housing finance, risk and non-performing asset studies, and the financial analysis of listed financial institutions. They are study references, showing how a complete MMPP-001 document is organised, how a methodology section is written out, and how results are laid out in tabular form with interpretation.

If you need the same material printed and bound rather than as a file, the IGNOU MBF Project hard copy category carries the printed sets. For the wider MMPP-001 catalogue across all five MBA specialisations, use the IGNOU MBA Project category. Course reading for the banking papers themselves sits under MBF books, and MBF solved assignments covers the assignment component of your other courses.

Ask which MBF reference set fits your topic

Using reference material without putting your submission at risk

The Certificate of Originality you sign states that the project is your own original work and has not been submitted earlier to this or any other university. That is a declaration you make personally, alongside your guide. Reference material is for understanding structure, standard of analysis and depth of interpretation. Submitting someone else’s document as your own contradicts the certificate you sign, and IGNOU states that a report found to be plagiarised attracts action under the University’s own policy.

The way to use these documents is to read one closely, see how the methodology section answers each objective, then write your own on your own data. If you need a study built around your topic from scratch rather than a reference document, that is handled through our customised project service on a separate site.

Frequently asked questions

Is the IGNOU MBF project the same as MS-100?

MS-100 is the earlier code for the same project course. The current code is MMPP-001, sometimes written MMPP-1, and IGNOU’s own proforma refers to the course as “earlier MS-100 and revised MMPP-001”. Use MMPP-001 on every document. A page still describing the project as MS-100 has not been updated.

Which semester is the MBF project in?

Semester 3. The MBF structure places MMPP-001 alongside MMPC-015, MMPC-016 and four banking specialisation courses in the third semester. Many pages describe it as a final semester project, which is incorrect and leads students to start far too late.

Is there a deadline for submitting the MBF project report?

No. The report can be submitted at any time throughout the year. What the calendar controls is when your result is declared: submissions between 1 December and 31 May are declared with June term-end results, and submissions between 1 June and 30 November with December term-end results.

Do I need to pass CAIIB to join MBF?

No. The stated eligibility for MBF is a bachelor’s degree of minimum three years duration with at least 50 per cent marks, or 45 per cent for candidates from reserved categories. A JAIIB or CAIIB qualification is not an entry requirement. It is relevant only for credit transfer against up to five courses, once you are admitted.

How long should the MBF project report be?

About 50 to 60 double spaced typed pages, not exceeding approximately 18,000 words, excluding appendices and exhibits. Rational variation on either side is permitted. The 50 to 100 page figure repeated on several sites does not come from the MMPP-001 guidelines.

Can I submit the MBF project report by email or on the LMS?

Not as an ODL student. One typed copy in A-4 size, double spaced and bound, goes to the Registrar (SED) at Maidan Garhi by registered post, speed post or by hand. LMS submission applies only to MBA (Online) students, which is a different programme.

Does my guide approve the synopsis?

No. Your guide signs the proforma and the bio-data, and helps you prepare the proposal. The decision to approve or not approve is made by an evaluator at your Regional Centre, countersigned by the Regional Director or Assistant Regional Director. The proforma has separate approval boxes for the synopsis and for the supervisor.

What happens if my proposed guide is not approved?

You change guide and submit the proposal again with the new guide’s signature on a new proforma. IGNOU treats that as a new proposal, not an amendment. The same applies if you choose to change guide for your own reasons.

Is a viva-voce compulsory for the MBF project?

No. A student may be asked to appear for a viva-voce only if the evaluator recommends it, and is duly intimated in that case. It is not a standard stage of MMPP-001.

Can I change my project title before binding the report?

The final report must carry the title approved by the evaluator, and no changes may be made at the time of submitting the report. If your work has moved away from the approved title, raise it with your Regional Centre before you bind the volume.

Does an abstract have to be included in the MMPP-001 report?

No. The eight sections IGNOU lists do not include an abstract. Several IGNOU project sites list one as a requirement. Adding one is unlikely to cause a problem, but it is not something the guidelines ask for.

How many students can one guide supervise?

Five at any given point in time. The proforma asks the supervisor to state how many students they are currently guiding for MMPP-001, and a guide already at five is a documented reason for a proposal being turned away.

What subject area should an MBF student write on the proforma?

Choose the option matching your topic rather than your programme name. Most MBF topics fall under Accounting and Finance. A study of digital banking systems or payment infrastructure may sit better under Operations Management and Information System. Corporate Management and Any Other are also available.

Who do I contact about the status of a submitted MBF project report?

The Assistant Registrar (SED), IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi 110068, at [email protected] or on 011-29571324 and 011-29571321, quoting the PR number allotted when you submitted. Queries about approval of the proposal go to your own Regional Director instead.
