What is the IGNOU MAEDU project (MESP 1 Dissertation)?

The IGNOU MAEDU project is MESP 1 Dissertation, a 10 credit course in the MA (Education) programme of IGNOU’s School of Education. It sits in Group C beside MES 16 Educational Research, is carried out in the second year alongside a 24 credit specialisation, and is written under the School’s Handbook on Dissertation Work.

The code appears in several spellings. The July 2026 Common Prospectus prints it as MESP 1, the Handbook calls it MESP-001, and students search it as MESP 01, MESP001 or mesp1. All of them name the same course. MA (Education), programme code MAEDU, carries 68 credits split as 34 per year. The first year covers MES 11 Understanding Education (4 credits), MES 12 to MES 15 (6 credits each) and MES 16 Educational Research (6 credits). The second year is one specialisation worth 24 credits plus the MESP 1 dissertation worth 10. IGNOU lists a minimum duration of 24 months, a maximum of 48 months, a fee of Rs 10,200 per year for national students, English as the medium of instruction, and eligibility as a bachelor’s degree in any discipline, with or without a degree in education.

Where is the official MESP-001 dissertation PDF, and what is inside it?

The official MESP-001 PDF is the Handbook on Dissertation Work, published by IGNOU’s School of Education in January 2009 and hosted on eGyanKosh. It is the document every MAEDU synopsis and dissertation answers to. It runs to 14 numbered sections and 9 appendices, and it contains no complete sample dissertation.

Sections 1 to 6 cover choosing a problem and writing the research proposal. The Handbook states plainly that the research proposal is also called the synopsis, so the two words mean one document for MESP 1. Sections 7 to 10 cover sampling, research tools, test development, validity, reliability and data analysis, and they repeatedly point back to units of MES 16 (written MES-016 in the Handbook). Sections 11 to 13 cover writing, styling and typing the report. The appendices are where most students go looking, usually by searching for a “MESP 001 dissertation PDF” or the “proforma for approval of MA Education dissertation proposal”. The list below comes from the Handbook’s own contents page.

Two practical points follow from this list. First, the only “samples” IGNOU itself supplies for MESP 1 are two proposals and one table of contents; any complete MAEDU dissertation PDF you find online was written by someone else. Second, eGyanKosh sometimes refuses downloads from certain networks, so if the link fails, ask your Regional Centre or Study Centre for the Handbook, and make sure the copy you use shows the Appendix IX proforma, because that is the page your guide and you sign.

MESP 1 in six quick answers

Is the MAEDU project the same as the MAEDU dissertation?

Yes. IGNOU titles the course MESP 1 Dissertation, and students, Regional Centre notices and study-help sites call it the MAEDU project, the MA Education dissertation or the MESP 1 project interchangeably. One course, one code, one Handbook.

In which year is the MESP 1 dissertation done?

In the second year, alongside the chosen specialisation. The Handbook asks you to pick a problem that can be completed in the second year together with the specialised courses, which is the real limit on how big a MAEDU study can be.

Do you need MES 16 before starting MESP 1?

MES 16 Educational Research is a first-year course, and the Handbook is written on the assumption that you have studied it. It sends you back to MES 16 for research types, hypotheses, sampling, tools, data analysis and referencing, so keep those blocks within reach.

Is a hypothesis compulsory in a MAEDU dissertation?

No. The Handbook says hypotheses matter most in experimental research, and that a hypothesis may not be required when the purpose is to find facts as they exist, as in historical and some descriptive studies.

Can the MAEDU dissertation be written in Hindi?

The prospectus and the programme page both list English as the medium of instruction for MAEDU, and the Handbook sections we read offer no language option. If you want to write in another language, get your Regional Centre’s answer in writing before you begin.

Who coordinates the MAEDU programme?

The July 2026 prospectus names Prof. Nirod Kumar Dash ([email protected]) and Dr. Niradhar Dey ([email protected]) of the School of Education as programme coordinators. Day-to-day dissertation queries still go to your own Regional Centre first.

Which MAEDU dissertation topics fit your specialisation?

A MAEDU dissertation topic should grow out of an issue in the compulsory MES courses or in your own specialisation, because the Handbook frames MESP 1 as the practical use of what MAEDU taught you. Its examples include learner characteristics, the learning environment, the effect of learner attributes on academic achievement, curriculum, evaluation, education policy and institutional management.

The Handbook names three places to find a problem: your own teaching or professional experience, inferences drawn from educational and psychological theories, and the “suggestions for further research” printed at the end of earlier MA (Education) and M.Ed dissertations and M.Phil and Ph.D theses. It then tests each candidate problem for significance and for feasibility, meaning your research competence, genuine interest, the money needed for tools and fieldwork, and time. The five specialisations the prospectus offers, each worth 24 credits, give the second natural source of topics:

• Higher Education: MES 101 to MES 104, covering context and linkages, instruction, the psycho-social context and planning and management.
• Distance Education: MES 211 to MES 215, covering philosophy, instructional design, learner support, management and communication technologies.
• Educational Technology: MES 131 to MES 134, covering an overview, computers in education, technology integration and courseware.
• Educational Management: MES 41 to MES 44, covering growth of the field, its dimensions, organisational behaviour and institutional management.
• Adult Education: MAE 1 to MAE 4, covering adult education, policy, knowledge management and extension.

The reference titles listed below are the MAEDU topics this category has carried. We read each one against the MAEDU course list to show where it belongs and what the proposal has to make explicit before a guide will sign it. A title that anchors cleanly in a course you studied is easier to defend at the viva.

None of these titles comes from IGNOU; the Handbook prescribes no topic list for MESP 1. Use them as worked examples of how a variable, a population and a boundary combine into a title, then build your own around the school, college or learners you can actually reach.

Which MAEDU reference set should you pick, and how should you use it?

Each MAEDU product in this category is a reference synopsis and dissertation on one title, supplied as a PDF, meant for studying structure and wording, not for submission under your name. The MESP-001 Handbook requires a signed declaration by the student (Appendix VI) and a certificate from your supervisor (Appendix VII), so the dissertation you hand in has to be your own study.

A reference set is useful at two moments. Before the synopsis, it shows how the proposal components the Handbook lists (title, context and rationale, statement of the problem, review, research questions, objectives, hypotheses where needed, operational definitions, delimitations and methodology) read when written out in full. After approval, it shows how those components turn into chapters, tables and an appendix of tools. Pick a set on three tests:

1. Specialisation match. Use the table above; a Higher Education title helps a Higher Education student far more than an Educational Management one.
2. Method match. A descriptive survey and an experimental study are written differently, which is why the Handbook itself gives one sample of each.
3. Tool match. If you plan to use a standardised scale, choose a set that reports a scale’s validity and reliability; if you plan your own test, choose one that shows test construction.

The same title can be bought by other students, so a reference set can never stand in for your own data, analysis or signed declaration; treat every set as a model to learn from. Guide, fee, submission and viva: what the documents confirm

Three things about MESP 1 are confirmed by IGNOU documents we read in full: the Rs 500 evaluation fee, the Appendix IX proforma for proposal approval, and a viva-voce held at the Regional Centre. The guide rules and the exact submission route sit in Appendix III of the Handbook and in your Regional Centre’s notice.

What is the MESP 1 project fee?

The July 2026 prospectus sets a project evaluation fee of Rs 300 for project work up to 4 credits and Rs 500 for project work above 4 credits, applicable from the January 2023 admission cycle and submitted with the term-end examination form. MESP 1 carries 10 credits, so the MAEDU dissertation falls in the Rs 500 band. This is separate from the programme fee of Rs 10,200 per year.

Who approves the synopsis, and who can be your guide?

The Handbook’s Appendix IX is the proforma on which the MAEDU proposal is sent for approval, and Appendix III holds the guidelines on guides and routing. Several independent pages quote Appendix III as sending the proposal with the Appendix IX proforma to the Regional Director of your Regional Centre. We could not open the appendix pages in an official copy on 28 September 2026, so this page does not state that route, or any guide eligibility list, as a rule. Confirm both with your Regional Centre before you approach a guide, and keep their answer in writing.

Where is the MESP 1 viva-voce held?

At the Regional Centre. Regional Centres publish MESP 1 viva schedules cycle by cycle; Ranchi, for example, listed a combined viva schedule for MAEDU (MESP-001) and PGDEMA (MESP-49) for the December 2025 term-end examination. A Regional Centre Darbhanga notice for the December 2024 cycle shows how it works in practice: the list was drawn from the dissertations the Centre had received, the venue was the Regional Centre, learners had to bring their IGNOU identity card and report 30 minutes early, and anyone missing from the list had to contact the Centre before a cut-off date.

Where does the finished dissertation go?

That depends on the current notice from your Regional Centre, since IGNOU runs both physical submission and an online project portal for several programmes; the June 2026 portal instructions, for instance, reject incomplete submissions and reports sent by email. Studied PGDHE, PGDET or PGDEMA courses? Check your project code first

Three MAEDU specialisations use exactly the same theory courses as standalone PG diplomas of the School of Education, but each diploma has its own project course, so sharing the courses never means sharing the project. A MAEDU learner writes MESP 1 whichever specialisation is chosen. The table sets out the neighbours, all taken from the July 2026 prospectus.

The overlap matters in two ways. A MAEDU student who searches for a “higher education project” or an “educational technology project” can easily land on PGDHE or PGDET material, which is written to a different credit weight and, in PGDET’s case, without the guide and proposal stages MESP 1 requires. The prospectus also adds a rule of its own: if you already hold a diploma or PG diploma in one of these areas, such as PGDET, you must choose a different MAEDU specialisation.

One legacy point is worth knowing when you compare notices. Annexure I(a) of the same July 2026 prospectus still prints the older codes MES 111 to MES 115 for the Distance Education stream and MES 31 to MES 34 for Educational Technology, while the MAEDU programme section uses MES 211 to MES 215 and MES 131 to MES 134. How long should the MAEDU dissertation be, and which format rules are real?

The report-writing sections of the MESP-001 Handbook (sections 11 to 13) set the structure and style of the MAEDU dissertation but give no page count, word count, font size or margin. Figures circulating online, such as 10,000 to 12,000 words or 25,000 words and 100 pages, do not come from those sections.

What the Handbook does fix is the shape of the report. The preliminary section holds the title page (title, the institution it is submitted to, your name, and the month and year of submission), a preface or acknowledgements, and the table of contents with lists of tables and figures. The body has four divisions: the introduction, the design of the study, the analysis and interpretation of data, which the Handbook calls the heart of the report, and the summary and conclusions. The reference section holds the bibliography and then the appendices, which carry copies of every test, questionnaire and interview schedule used. A few style rules are specific and easy to miss:

• Write as “the researcher” or “the investigator”; the Handbook rules out I, we, you, my, our and us.
• Keep statistical formulae and computations out of the text; report the test, the result and its meaning.
• Use the past tense for what you and earlier researchers did, and the present tense when pointing to tables.
• Report any weakness in design, tools or sample frankly, with its likely effect on the findings.

Because Appendix III was not readable in an official copy this session, check it and your Regional Centre’s notice for any length or binding instruction; where either sets one, follow it.
