IGNOU MAEC Project: What It Is and Which Code Applies to You

The IGNOU MAEC project is an optional Semester IV research course in the MA Economics (MAEC) programme, listed in the July 2026 Common Prospectus as MECP-301 Project Work (4 credits) and earlier coded MECP-201 and MECP-202, and before that MECP-101 and MECP-102. Whichever code you hold, the work is the same in shape: a proposal (synopsis) approved by the Faculty of Economics at IGNOU headquarters, followed by a project report of about 15,000 to 20,000 words.

Four Codes, One Project: How the MAEC Project Code Changed

IGNOU has used four sets of codes for the MA Economics project, and the one printed on your own Semester IV registration is the only one that matters for your submission. Most confusion comes from the fact that the University has not updated every document at the same time. In September 2026 the IGNOU programme page for MAEC still lists MECP-201 and MECP-202, while the July 2026 Common Prospectus lists MECP-301.

How to find out which MAEC project code is yours

Do not decide from a website, including this one. Check these in order and stop at the first that gives a clear answer:

Your Semester IV registration or re-registration record. The course list you paid for shows the exact project code.
Your Term-End Examination form. The project must be selected there with its evaluation fee, so the code on the form must match your registration.
Your specialisation group. Under the four-group structure, MECP-202 sat in Group A (Data Analytics) and Group D (Social Policy), and MECP-201 in Group B (Energy and Environmental Economics) and Group C (Insurance and Finance). Under the July 2026 three-group structure (A Data Analytics, B Insurance and Finance, C Social Policy), every group lists MECP-301.

If these sources disagree, write to your Regional Centre before you post a proposal. A proposal sent under the wrong code is a problem that is far easier to prevent than to repair.

Is the IGNOU MAEC Project Compulsory?

No. IGNOU’s own project guides describe the MAEC project as an optional course, taken as one of the choices inside your Semester IV group. Many websites state that no MAEC student can get the degree without MECP-201 or MECP-301. That is not what the University documents say.

The arithmetic supports this. Semester IV requires 20 credits from a group, yet the July 2026 prospectus lists 24 credits in Group A and 28 credits in Groups B and C, each including MECP-301. A student can therefore complete 20 credits with or without the project, subject to the courses actually on offer that session. Offerings do change; IGNOU withdrew two Group A courses for the January 2025 semester, for example.

The project guide adds one rule every student should know before opting in. If the Faculty asks for revisions, a student gets a maximum of two chances to revise the proposal. A student who still fails to satisfy the Faculty must complete another optional course in place of the project work.

When the project is a good choice: you want research experience for a teaching, research or policy career, you can reach a local data source or respondent group, and you have the months needed for approval, fieldwork and evaluation. When a taught course may suit you better: your registration window is tight, or you have no realistic access to data.

Who Approves Your MAEC Project Proposal

The MAEC project proposal and the name of your supervisor are both approved by the Faculty of Economics at IGNOU headquarters in Maidan Garhi, New Delhi, not by your Regional Centre or your supervisor. This is the single biggest procedural difference between the MA Economics project and several other IGNOU projects, such as the MBA project, where the synopsis goes to the Regional Director.

According to the project guide, the proposal is sent in hard copy, typed, with the Project Proposal Proforma (Annexure A) and the signed bio-data of your supervisor, to the Course Coordinator of the project course, M.A. Economics Programme, School of Social Sciences, Block F, IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi 110068. The guides ask students to prepare two copies, send one, and use Registered Post (the October 2024 guide also permits Speed Post). The Faculty sends the approval in due course.

Three rules carry real consequences:

No approval, no evaluation. A project report submitted without an approved proposal will not be evaluated under any circumstances.
Title lock. Do not change the topic, or even its wording, after sending the proposal. The report title must match the proposal.
Complete Annexure A carefully. It records your enrolment number, study centre code, Regional Centre code, project title, guide name, and whether the guide is an academic counsellor of the MA Economics programme.

IGNOU does not publish a fixed turnaround time for MAEC proposal approval in these guides. Plan for it rather than rely on a number quoted by a third-party site. The Programme Coordinator named in the July 2026 Common Prospectus is Prof. Vijeta Banwari, SOSS; use the contact details printed there for academic queries.

Who Can Supervise an IGNOU MAEC Project

Your MAEC project supervisor can be an approved academic counsellor at your study centre, or a person actively involved in research and associated with a research institution, provided the Faculty of Economics approves the name. The project guide states that all academic counsellors are eligible and that a list of supervisors is available with your Study Centre Coordinator, who can assign one suited to your topic.

The supervisor signs Annexure A and later the certificate (Annexure C). The guide also expects the supervisor to help with local contacts, provide authorisation letters for enquiries at offices, open the study centre library to you, advise on theme and data, and suggest reading. If the Faculty does not approve your proposed supervisor, you must give the name of another eligible person.

The Seven Parts of a MAEC Project Proposal, With IGNOU’s Limits

An IGNOU MAEC project proposal must contain seven elements: title, problem statement, objectives, research questions, type of data, research methodology and expected outcome. The guide also sets numeric limits that keep the project finishable, and these limits are where many proposals quietly go wrong.

A proposal with five objectives, a 400-household survey and a national scope breaks three of these limits at once. The Faculty can return it for revision, and each return uses one of your two revision chances.

Methodology Selection Matrix for the MA Economics Project

Match the analysis technique to the kind of question you are asking, then read the MEC-109 (Research Methods in Economics) unit that teaches it before you write the methodology section. The MAEC project guide advises students to study MEC-109 before taking up project work, and it maps techniques to units. The matrix below reorganises that official table by research question, which is how students actually start.

Two cautions. First, the unit numbers are those printed in the 2015 MAEC project guide; MEC-109 remains a current Semester II course, but check the block and unit list in your own copy. Second, the guide warns that regression models may not suit studies built on nominal or ordinal data, such as a participatory study of unpaid care work. There, descriptive statistics are the right tool.

Where MA Economics projects usually get their data

The guide points students to the data-base-of-the-Indian-economy block of MEC-109 and to official agencies: MoSPI and NSSO survey rounds, the Census of India, the Reserve Bank of India database, the Directorate of Economics and Statistics in the agriculture ministry, NABARD, SEBI and DGCI&S. For every secondary source, record who collected the data, when, the full title, the issuing agency and the edition. Those details feed the references and protect the report when an examiner checks a figure.

Illustrative MAEC project themes

The official guide offers broad themes to be narrowed by aspect, time and place, including the local welfare effects of MGNREGA, growth and poverty at district level using time-series data, poverty across social groups using NSSO rounds, unit cost analysis of an educational institution, child labour in your area, women’s empowerment in a district, and inequality across sections of society. The list is explicitly illustrative, and the Faculty welcomes area-based and organisation-based projects.

Mapped to the July 2026 groups, a Data Analytics student might build a composite index from Census and NSS indicators; an Insurance and Finance student might study household take-up of a crop or health insurance scheme in one block; a Social Policy student might use participatory methods on women’s unpaid work. These are our examples, not IGNOU’s list.

IGNOU MAEC Project Report Format: The Official Specification

The MAEC project report should be 15,000 to 20,000 words (50 to 60 pages), typed in one and a half line spacing, written in English or Hindi, and divided into about four to five chapters. The University prefers a typed and bound copy. The guide also fixes the order of the opening pages, which is more specific than most students expect.

The guide says the soft copy of the report is checked with anti-plagiarism software, that the report must be in your own language, and that copying any published or unpublished project leads to cancellation. Photographs, maps and diagrams are welcome where they are needed.

What the MAEC guide does not specify

The guide does not prescribe a font, font size, margin width or an abstract. Pages that present these as IGNOU rules are giving common practice, not a University requirement. Use a clean, readable layout and follow any instruction your supervisor gives.

One more point to watch: the October 2024 MECP-202 guide still carries a sentence describing the project as six credits and about 180 hours of work, although MECP-202 is a 4-credit course. The credit value on your registration governs.

How the IGNOU MAEC Project Is Evaluated

An examiner marks the MAEC project report, and you need at least 40 percent to complete the course. The MECP-101 guide says evaluation takes a minimum of two months from submission and distributes the 100 report marks as follows:

Nearly half the marks sit in methodology and analysis. That is why the matrix above matters more than decorative formatting. The October 2024 MECP-202 guide adds that evaluation has two components, the project report and a viva-voce, and frames its resubmission rule around scoring below 40 percent in those components. Confirm the viva arrangements that apply to your code and session.

If the MAEC project scores below 40 percent

IGNOU informs the student and sends the evaluator’s comments. The guides then ask you to redo the work in light of those comments, attach Annexures B and C (Annexure A is not needed again), and send it for fresh evaluation with a demand draft of Rs 1,000 in favour of IGNOU payable at New Delhi. Payment modes change over time, so confirm the current method with the Student Evaluation Division before sending a draft.

Submitting the MAEC Project Report and Paying the Fee

The MAEC project evaluation fee is paid with the Term-End Examination form: Rs 300 for a project of up to 4 credits, such as MECP-301 or MECP-202, and Rs 500 for MECP-201. These slabs have applied since the January 2023 admission cycle, according to the Common Prospectus. Missing the project on the examination form is a common reason a submitted report shows no result.

The MECP-101 guide directs students to prepare two hard copies, keep one, and send one, with a soft copy, to the Registrar, Student Evaluation Division (SED), Block 12, IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi 110068. The report must include the Annexure C certificate signed by you and your supervisor. IGNOU does not return submitted copies. Submission modes are revised from time to time, so check the current SED notification for your session before posting. Result timing follows the Term-End Examination cycle in which your report is evaluated.

IGNOU MAEC Project: Frequently Asked Questions

Is MECP-301 the same as MECP-201 and MECP-202?

MECP-301 is the project code in the July 2026 Common Prospectus, carrying 4 credits in every specialisation group. MECP-201 (6 credits) and MECP-202 (4 credits) belong to the earlier four-group structure. The procedure is similar, but the code on your registration decides which one you submit under.

Can I take both MECP-201 and MECP-202?

No. IGNOU states that students are not permitted to opt for both MECP-201 and MECP-202.

Can I write the IGNOU MAEC project in Hindi?

Yes. The MAEC project guide allows the project report to be written in English or Hindi. The programme itself is offered in both media.

Can I change my MAEC project title after approval?

No. The guide says the topic, including its wording, must not change after the proposal is sent. The report title must be the same as the proposal title.

What happens if my MAEC proposal is returned twice?

You get a maximum of two chances to revise. If the revised proposal still does not satisfy the Faculty, you must complete another optional course instead of the project work.

Is secondary data acceptable for the MA Economics project?

Yes. The guide treats secondary sources such as NSSO, Census, RBI and ministry statistics as the first option, with a primary survey of up to 100 observations only where secondary data does not meet the need.

Do I need a hypothesis in my MAEC synopsis?

No. A hypothesis is optional and should be avoided in exploratory or descriptive studies. If you include one, keep it to two at most and consistent with your research questions.

Can someone outside my study centre supervise my MAEC project?

Yes, if that person is actively involved in research and associated with a research institution, and the Faculty of Economics approves the name. Enclose the supervisor’s signed bio-data with the proposal.

Does the MAEC project need a CD or soft copy?

The 2015 MECP-101 guide asked for a CD with the soft copy, and the guide says soft copies are checked for plagiarism. Media and upload routes change, so follow the current SED instruction for your session.

Why does the IGNOU website still show MECP-201 and MECP-202?

IGNOU documents are updated at different times. In September 2026 the MAEC programme page showed the four-group structure with MECP-201 and MECP-202, while the July 2026 Common Prospectus showed three groups with MECP-301. Go by your own registration record.
