IGNOU MSCHSC Project: MHCP 001 and MHCP 002 Are Two Separate Courses
The IGNOU MSCHSC project is two compulsory courses, each registered and evaluated on its own. MHCP 001, Field Project in Home Science, is a 4-credit first-year course. MHCP 002, Research Project in Home Science, is a 6-credit second-year course. Both belong to the M.Sc. (Home Science – Community Development and Extension Management) programme of the School of Continuing Education.
That split decides almost everything else on this page. A first-year student needs a field project and nothing more yet. A second-year student needs a research project, written while studying MHC 008, the programme’s research methods course. The two courses also carry different evaluation fees, because IGNOU charges project fees by credit. The sheet below puts both MHCP courses side by side, using only the Common Prospectus of July 2026, the programme page and the School’s own assignment booklets.

Why other pages describe the MHCP courses wrongly
Several websites describe MHCP 001 as the proposal and MHCP 002 as the final report of a single project. Others swap the two, calling MHCP 001 the theoretical part and MHCP 002 the practical one. One page even presents MSCHSC as a counselling and family therapy degree. The official course titles settle it: MHCP 001 is the field project and MHCP 002 is the research project, and IGNOU lists each as a separate Project course with its own credits.
Five MSCHSC Project Questions, Answered Before You Start
These are the questions that come up most often on MSCHSC project pages and student forums. Each answer below says what the official documents show and, where they are silent, says so.
Is MHCP 001 just the synopsis for MHCP 002?
No. IGNOU lists MHCP 001 as a separate 4-credit Project course in Year 1, with its own title and its own evaluation fee. A synopsis is a step inside a project course, not a course by itself. Whether your MHCP 002 study may build on your MHCP 001 field site is a question for your supervisor or the programme coordinators, because we found no published rule on it either way.
Are both MHCP courses compulsory?
Yes. The prospectus marks only the paired electives as choices: MGS 001 or MRD 202 in Year 1, and MEDS 051 or MHC 009 in Year 2. Every other course is compulsory, both MHCP courses included. The M.Sc. cannot be completed without MHCP 002, and the 40-credit PGDCDEM exit award includes MHCP 001.
How many words or pages should an MHCP report be?
Figures quoted online run from 8,000 to 10,000 words, to 60 to 100 pages, to 80 to 120 pages, and none of them cites an MHCP document. We could not find a published MHCP length rule. The one official signal is credit weight: MHCP 002 carries 6 credits against 4 for MHCP 001, so it is the larger piece of work. Follow the length given in your course material or by your supervisor.
Is there an assignment for MHCP 001 or MHCP 002?
No assignment is set for either project course. The School of Continuing Education booklets count 7 assignments in Year 1 (six compulsory theory courses and one elective) and 6 in Year 2 (five compulsory theory courses and one elective). Those counts match the theory courses exactly, which leaves the MHCP courses to be assessed on the project work itself.
Is the MSCHSC project the same as the MSCCFT project?
No. MSCCFT is the M.Sc. in Counselling and Family Therapy, a different IGNOU programme with its own project courses. The MHCP codes belong only to MSCHSC. If you are an MSCCFT student, go to the IGNOU MSCCFT project category instead.
When Do You Do Each MSCHSC Project? Year 1, Year 2 and the PGDCDEM Exit
You do MHCP 001 in Year 1 and MHCP 002 in Year 2. MSCHSC is a year-wise programme of 80 credits with admission in January and July, and each year’s project sits among that year’s theory courses. Year 1 totals 40 credits, and a student who stops after Year 1 can take the PG Diploma in Community Development and Extension Management (PGDCDEM) as an exit award.
IGNOU first offered MSCHSC from the July 2024 session, under Launch Notification No. 146 of 13 June 2024. That makes the MHCP 002 cohort very recent: the first students reached Year 2 only in 2025-26, which helps explain why public guidance on the research project is still thin. If you joined in July 2026, your project for this year is MHCP 001, and MHCP 002 comes after re-registration for Year 2.
If you plan to exit with PGDCDEM after Year 1
The PGDCDEM exit is built from the Year 1 courses, and MHCP 001 is one of them. A student who wants the diploma therefore needs MHCP 001 completed along with the Year 1 theory courses, while MHCP 002 is not part of the diploma. Confirm the exit procedure and timing with your Regional Centre before you stop re-registering.
Launch notification or current prospectus: which numbers apply?
The two official documents agree on every MHCP code, title and credit value. They differ on the programme itself. The 2024 launch notification listed a maximum duration of 5 years and a fee of Rs 14,000 for the full programme, while the July 2026 Common Prospectus lists 2 to 4 years and Rs 7,500 per year, Rs 15,000 in total. For duration and fee, follow the prospectus of your own admission cycle and your Regional Centre.

How the MHC 008 Assignment Rehearses Your MHCP 002 Synopsis
MHC 008, Research Methods in Community Development and Extension Management, is a 4-credit Year 2 course that runs alongside MHCP 002. Its 2025-26 assignment makes you work through the same decisions a research synopsis needs: hypotheses, design, sampling, tools, reliability and analysis. Treat your MHC 008 answers as a first draft of your MHCP 002 thinking.
The table pairs questions from the official MHC 008 assignment for the July 2025 and January 2026 sessions with the synopsis section each one prepares. The pairing is our reading of the two courses, not an IGNOU instruction, and your synopsis must still follow the format given in your MHCP 002 material. Reuse the reasoning, not the assignment text: both documents are read by evaluators from the same School.

Who Can Guide an MSCHSC Project?
We could not find a published MHCP rule on who may supervise an MSCHSC project or how a supervisor is allotted. Claims online that IGNOU always assigns you a supervisor are not backed by any MHCP document we could locate, and neither is the opposite claim. Ask your study centre coordinator first, because MSCHSC counselling runs through study centres.
The one official data point we found is an academic counsellor eligibility sheet for MSCHSC posted by IGNOU Regional Centre Madurai. For MHCP-001 it lists a master’s degree in Home Science (Extension and Communication, or General), or in Extension, Agricultural Extension, Social Work, Sociology or Rural Development, with at least two years of experience, and it allows some relaxation in remote areas such as the North-East states and Jammu and Kashmir. That sheet describes who can counsel the course at a study centre. It is not a published supervisor rule, so treat it as a strong hint rather than a requirement.

MHCP Project Fee, Submission Route and Last Date
IGNOU charges a project evaluation fee of Rs 300 for MHCP 001 and Rs 500 for MHCP 002, paid with the Term-End Examination form. There is no single MHCP-specific last date in the documents we read, and the report route follows the MSCHSC programme structure, so confirm the current route with your study centre before you post or upload anything.
Rs 300 for MHCP 001, Rs 500 for MHCP 002
The Common Prospectus of July 2026 sets the project evaluation fee at Rs 300 for project work of up to 4 credits and Rs 500 above 4 credits, payable with the Term-End Examination form and not refundable. The Student Evaluation Division fee portal gives the same two slabs and applies them from the January 2023 admission cycle onwards, which covers every MSCHSC batch since the July 2024 launch. MHCP 001, at 4 credits, falls in the lower slab. MHCP 002, at 6 credits, falls in the higher one.
Is there a fixed last date for MHCP submission?
Not in any MHCP document we could read. IGNOU announces project report windows cycle by cycle, alongside the June and December Term-End Examination schedules, and extends them from time to time. Plan backwards from the exam form schedule of the cycle in which you want your result, and pay the project fee with that form.
Where does the MHCP report go?
The Student Evaluation Division states that project components are submitted and evaluated at SED or Regional Centre level according to each programme’s structure and Programme Guide. The MSCHSC assignment booklets refer to a Programme Guide, but we could not find it published online, so we will not guess an address. Your study centre or the programme coordinators can confirm whether your cycle uses posting, hand submission or an online upload.

A reference set shows how a community development study is framed and written up: how a title is narrowed to one site or group, how objectives are worded, how a schedule or questionnaire is described, and how tables are read back against each objective. It does not replace your own fieldwork. IGNOU evaluates the MHCP report as your own study, built on data you collected, so use a set to plan your structure and method, then write from your own field notes.

MHCP 001 Field Project Topics That Fit a 4-Credit First-Year Study
A good MHCP 001 topic is small, local and observable: one village, ward or institution, one programme or one group, studied first-hand over a few weeks. Take the angle from your Year 1 courses, such as participatory community development or programme planning and evaluation, and keep the question answerable from what you can see and record in the field.
The examples below are titles we use when planning reference sets. They are not an IGNOU list, and each one names the Year 1 course it draws on.
- A participatory appraisal of drinking water and sanitation needs in one village (MHC 004, Participatory Community Development)
- Functioning of a women’s self-help group: meetings, savings and livelihood activities in one block (MHC 002, Community Organisation and Community Development)
- Process documentation of one community nutrition or health awareness drive, from planning to feedback (MHC 003, Programme Planning and Evaluation)
- Reach of extension messages sent through community radio or mobile phones among farm women in one village (MDC 003 and MDC 005)
- Awareness and use of one rural development scheme among eligible households in a panchayat (MRD 202, if chosen as your elective)
Several topic lists online offer child cognition, textiles or college students’ food choices for MHCP 001. Those belong to other branches of Home Science. MSCHSC is a community development and extension programme, so a field project that studies a community, a programme or an extension activity sits closer to what the course title asks for.
MHCP 002 Research Project Topics Built for MHC 008 Methods
MHCP 002 carries more credit than MHCP 001 and runs beside a research methods course, so pick a question you can test with a defined sample, a tested tool and a plan of analysis. The MHC 008 assignment itself uses nutrition education and the dietary practices of rural women as a hypothesis example, which shows the kind of question the School treats as researchable.
As with MHCP 001, these are our planning examples, not an IGNOU list. Each draws on a Year 2 course.

Before you settle on a title, run it past the crosswalk table above: if you cannot yet name the population, the sampling method, the tool and the tables, the topic is still too broad for MHCP 002.
