IGNOU MAPY Project: What Is MPYP-001, and Is It Compulsory?
The IGNOU MAPY project is MPYP-001, Dissertation/Project work, a 4-credit second-year course of the MA Philosophy programme run by the School of Inter-Disciplinary and Trans-Disciplinary Studies (SOITS). The Common Prospectus July 2026 places it in the second-year elective list, from which a MAPY student picks six, so the dissertation is one of your options rather than a fixed requirement.
IGNOU’s programme page describes the MPYP-001 dissertation as the point where a student philosophises independently at the end of postgraduate study: you choose one theme, work with a guide, review the relevant literature on it, and build the research habits that M.Phil and PhD work later demand. The only document IGNOU has written for this course alone is the MPYP-001 student manual, Research in Philosophy: A Student Manual. Its four units cover systematic research in philosophy, collecting material and taking notes, writing a research paper, and presenting it. The manual says openly that it condenses the units of MPYE-007 Research Methodology in Philosophy, the first-year elective. Every rule on this page about topics, synopsis and format comes from that manual, the MAPY programme page, the prospectus, or IGNOU’s project portal instructions, and each is labelled where it appears.
| Point | What IGNOU states | Where it is stated |
|---|---|---|
| Course code and title | MPYP-001, Dissertation/Project work (the prospectus prints it as MPYP 1, Dissertation) | MAPY programme page; Common Prospectus July 2026, section 3.37 |
| Credits and type | 4 credits, Project | MAPY programme page |
| When | Second year of MAPY | Programme page; prospectus |
| Status | Listed among second-year electives, choose any six | Prospectus, section 3.37 |
| Programme | MA Philosophy (MAPY), 64 credits: 16 compulsory, 48 elective | Programme page |
| Medium | English; a student may write the examinations in Hindi | Programme page |
| Programme fee | Rs 8,200 per year, Rs 16,400 for the programme, plus Rs 300 registration; examination fees extra | Programme page |
| Project evaluation fee | Rs 300 for project work up to 4 credits, paid with the term-end examination form | Prospectus, examination fee section; SED project portal |
| Programme Coordinator | Prof. Nandini Sinha Kapur, [email protected], 011-29573376 | Prospectus, section 3.37 |
One correction before you go further. Some MAPY admission pages list MPYP-001 as an 8-credit course. IGNOU’s programme page lists 4 credits, and the credit figure matters, because it decides which project evaluation fee band applies to you.

MAPY or MAPC? Check You Are on the Right Project Page
MAPY is IGNOU’s MA Philosophy and MAPC is its MA Psychology, and their projects share nothing except the word “project”. MAPY sits in SOITS and uses the MPY, MPYE and MPYP course codes. MAPC belongs to the Discipline of Psychology in the School of Social Sciences and follows its own project handbook. If your ID card says MAPC, this category is the wrong one for you.
The mix-up is common enough to have reached published guides. At least one widely read walkthrough titled for the “MAPY MPYP-01 project” proposes topics such as social media and academic stress or mindfulness and anxiety, and gives a synopsis template with hypotheses, sample size, tools and statistics. Those are psychology projects. Use the table below as a quick filter whenever you read MAPY advice anywhere, including here.
| What you see in a guide or sample | Does it fit a MAPY MPYP-001 dissertation? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Course codes MPY, MPYE or MPYP | Yes | These are the MAPY codes on IGNOU’s programme page |
| A thinker, a text, a concept, or two thinkers compared on one issue | Yes | These are the topic kinds the MPYP-001 manual describes (Unit 1.5) |
| Footnotes, primary and secondary sources, a bibliography in Chicago or APA style | Yes | The manual’s Units 2 and 3 are built around these |
| Course codes beginning MPCE, or the School of Social Sciences | No | These belong to MA Psychology (MAPC) |
| Hypotheses with variables, sample size, questionnaires, statistical tests | Almost never | The manual says philosophical research draws mostly on journal articles, research reports, conference papers and theses (Unit 2.1) |
| Topics on stress, anxiety, sleep or academic performance measured in people | No | These are empirical psychology topics; no MAPY course covers them |
If you are an MA Psychology learner, go to the IGNOU MAPC project category or its printed MAPC project section instead. If you are MAPY, read on.

Should You Choose MPYP-001 as One of Your Six Second-Year Electives?
Choose MPYP-001 if you want one sustained piece of philosophical writing and can find a guide who knows your theme; take a theory elective if you would rather prepare for an assignment and a term-end paper. Both carry 4 credits, so the dissertation adds no extra credit weight to your MAPY degree.
The second-year list in the prospectus has nine theory electives, MPYE-008 Metaphysics to MPYE-016 Philosophy of Sri Aurobindo, plus MPYP-001. You need six. The comparison below uses only figures IGNOU publishes.
| Point | MPYP-001 Dissertation/Project work | A 4-credit theory elective, for example MPYE-014 Philosophy of Mind |
|---|---|---|
| Credits | 4 | 4 |
| What you produce | One dissertation on a single theme, written with a guide | Assignment responses and a term-end examination answer script |
| Fee at the examination stage | Rs 300 project evaluation fee | Rs 200 examination fee per theory course |
| Needs a guide | Yes; the programme page describes the student working independently with a guide | No |
| IGNOU preparation material | The MPYP-001 student manual, plus MPYE-007 if you took it in the first year | The course blocks for that elective |
| Longer-term value IGNOU names | Research skills for M.Phil and PhD work | Subject depth and examination practice |
Two practical checks follow from IGNOU’s own documents. First, the manual assumes you know the basics of research method; it calls itself a summary of MPYE-007. If you skipped MPYE-007 in the first year, read the manual’s first two units before you commit. Second, plan the dissertation inside the programme’s maximum duration. The prospectus gives MAPY a minimum of 2 years and a maximum of 4, and the Duration section of the programme page says 24 to 48 months, although the same page’s introduction mentions “2 to 5 years”. Work to the 4-year figure, and ask your Regional Centre whether an elective can be swapped after re-registration, since we found no MAPY rule on that point.
IGNOU MAPY Project Topics and Synopsis Format: What the MPYP-001 Manual Asks For
The MPYP-001 manual recognises two main kinds of philosophy dissertation topic: one centred on a thinker or a text, and one centred on a concept traced across several thinkers. Comparative studies of two thinkers or two schools are also accepted. Its synopsis has five parts: a provisional title, the aim and objectives, an outline of contents, the method of procedure and the sources available.
Three topic shapes, with MAPY courses to draw on
The manual’s own narrowing example runs from “Indian Philosophy” to “Concept of God in Sri Aurobindo”. It warns against themes that are too generic, prefers papers based on an original text, an author or a defined area, and asks that the title be short and precise. The patterns below are illustrations of the manual’s three shapes, not an IGNOU topic list.
| Topic shape (manual, Unit 1.5) | Illustrative title pattern | MAPY courses that supply the reading |
|---|---|---|
| Thinker or text | The idea of [concept] in [one thinker or one text] | MPYE-016 Philosophy of Sri Aurobindo, MPYE-015 Gandhian Philosophy, MPY-001 Indian Philosophy |
| Concept across thinkers | The concept of [personhood, truth, freedom] in [two or three named thinkers] | MPYE-004 Philosophy of Human Person, MPYE-003 Epistemology, MPYE-014 Philosophy of Mind |
| Comparative study | [Thinker A] and [Thinker B] on [one issue]; or two schools on one doctrine | MPY-001 Indian Philosophy with MPY-002 Western Philosophy, MPYE-010 Philosophy of Religion |
The manual adds four tests to apply before you approach a guide. The subject should interest your readers as well as you. The sources should be neither too vast nor too thin. An author-based study must separate primary sources, the author’s own works, from secondary sources about the author. And you must have a competent supervisor available for that specific subject.
The synopsis, the schema and the working bibliography
In the manual, the synopsis is an abstract of the topic: the provisional title, the aim and objective of the research, the outline of the topic’s contents, the method of procedure, and the source materials available. Two companion pieces travel with it. The schema is the chapter outline with subtitles, and the working bibliography lists the books and articles already identified. The manual says all three are prepared in consultation with the supervisor you have chosen. It sets no word limit for the MPYP-001 synopsis, so a “1,000 words” figure you may see elsewhere is not an MPYP-001 rule; agree the length with your guide.
Synopsis section audit: what borrowed templates add
Many students download a generic IGNOU synopsis and fill it in. For MAPY that template usually belongs to an empirical programme. This audit shows what to replace.
| Section often copied into MAPY synopses | Is it in the MPYP-001 manual’s synopsis? | What to write instead |
|---|---|---|
| Hypothesis with dependent and independent variables | No | A statement of thesis that names your research area and defines the scope of the paper, which the manual asks for in Unit 1.5 |
| Population, sample and sampling technique | No | The source materials available: the primary texts and the secondary literature you will read |
| Questionnaire, scale or test as the research tool | No | The tools the manual names for philosophy research: the library, computer resources, language, and the human mind (Unit 1.4) |
| Statistical analysis plan | No | The method of procedure: the manual’s philosophical method moves from doubt to a clearly stated question, a proposed solution, the argument that justifies it, and criticism of it (Unit 1.3) |
| Expected findings | No | The outline of contents, showing how the chapters build the argument |
| Review of literature | Not in the synopsis list | Keep it brief here; the manual places the full review in the introduction of the final report (Unit 4.1) |

Who Can Be Your MAPY Project Guide, and Who Approves the Synopsis?
The MPYP-001 manual sets no formal qualification for a guide; it asks you to make sure a competent supervisor is available for your specific subject. On approval, IGNOU’s June 2026 project portal instructions say a synopsis can be forwarded to the concerned School or Regional Centre, so confirm the MAPY route with SOITS before you send anything.
On choosing a supervisor, the manual lists the factors to weigh: the person’s interest in your subject, their specialisation, their ability to guide, and your own capacity to meet the demands of the theme. It describes supervisors as mentors and moderators who point you to literature and challenge your positions. It also sets out how the relationship should run: regular consultation, writing submitted chapter by chapter rather than all at once, ample time for the supervisor to correct, and every suggested correction carried out carefully.
What we could not find, as of 3 October 2026, is any MPYP-001 document that states a guide’s required qualification, prints a MAPY synopsis proforma, gives a synopsis postal or email address, or fixes an approval timeline. The SED portal instructions do two useful things: they require the guide’s or supervisor’s approval in the prescribed proforma before a report is uploaded, and they ask that the approved proforma, synopsis, guide bio-data and a dated originality certificate signed by student and guide be included wherever applicable. The safest step is a short written query to the MAPY Programme Coordinator or your Regional Centre asking which proforma to use and where the synopsis goes. Keep the reply; it is your proof of the route you followed. Advice that tells MAPY learners to email a Word file of the synopsis to the Regional Centre may describe one centre’s practice, but we found no MPYP-001 document that says so.
MAPY Dissertation Format: Pages, Font, Spacing and Citation Style
The MPYP-001 manual recommends about 50 pages, typed in a 12-point standard font such as Times, double spaced, single-sided, with 1-inch margins and pages numbered consecutively. You may reference in Chicago (Turabian) style or APA style, provided you use one consistently, and every borrowed idea needs a footnote or endnote.
The order of pages in the bound dissertation
The manual’s “quick look” at the structure of the paper gives this sequence:
- Cover page
- Plain paper
- Inner title page
- Preface and acknowledgement
- Certificate of the supervisor
- Table of contents
- Introduction
- Chapters 1, 2, 3 and onwards
- Conclusion
- End notes, appendix and index, where you have them
- Bibliography
- Plain paper
- Back cover
Elsewhere the manual adds a researcher’s declaration and describes the preface as a summary of the main findings in two hundred words or less. It asks that the introduction be written after the body, that each chapter begin on a new page, and that the conclusion avoid claiming to have settled the question for good.
Details students tend to miss
The manual specifies 8.5 by 11 inch paper, which is US Letter size. Most printers in India stock A4, so ask your guide which size to use before printing. The title page of a long dissertation is set at 1.5 line spacing, with the title, your name and enrolment number, your guide’s name and designation, the purpose of the paper, the month and year of submission, and the institution. Encyclopaedias and dictionaries are left out of the reference list, and religious texts such as the Bhagavad Gita appear only if your study works on specific versions or translations of them. Figures such as 10,000 to 15,000 words or 80 to 100 pages, which some sites quote for MPYP-001, do not appear in the manual.
Plagiarism, in the manual’s own terms
The manual is blunt here. It names copying from web pages and copying seniors’ previous assignments and papers as plagiarism, and asks that the whole text be in the student’s own style and language, with every paraphrase and quotation acknowledged in a footnote. The originality certificate on the portal checklist exists for the same reason.
MPYP-001 Project Fee, Online Submission and the December 2026 Cycle
The MPYP-001 evaluation fee is Rs 300, the band IGNOU sets for project work up to 4 credits. For the December 2026 term-end examination, IGNOU’s Student Evaluation Division opened the project fee window in September 2026 and set 30 November 2026 as the last date, with payment only through your own IGNOU Samarth portal login.
The fee rule itself sits in the Common Prospectus July 2026 and applies from the January 2023 admission cycle onward. The SED portal adds that a copy of the fee receipt goes with the report, and that a report whose fee was not paid along with the term-end examination form will not be evaluated. Once paid, examination fees are neither refundable nor adjustable.
IGNOU had not posted a December 2026 project upload link on its announcements page when this page was reviewed on 3 October 2026. The 31 October 2026 extension announced on 1 October covers assignments; do not assume it moves the dissertation deadline. The most recent portal instructions, issued for June 2026, set out rules that have stayed consistent across cycles:
- Upload the original report as one PDF for one course.
- The first page must carry the title, your name, programme code, enrolment number as printed on your ID card (not the control number), Regional Centre code, course code, mobile number and email.
- Scans must be clear, well lit, in the right sequence and in one orientation throughout.
- Reports sent by email are not considered, and incomplete uploads are removed after the last date.
- The portal is for final reports only; do not upload a synopsis or an assignment there.
Dates such as 31 May and 30 November, which some MAPY guides print as fixed deadlines, are not MPYP-001 rules. Each cycle’s date comes from that cycle’s notification; the June 2026 portal, for example, closed on 15 June 2026. After submission, queries go to your Regional Centre or to [email protected], the SED project section address.
What You Get in This IGNOU MAPY Project Category
This category lists MPYP-001 reference material: sample synopses and sample dissertations on philosophy themes, laid out the way the MPYP-001 manual describes, supplied as PDF, with a printed and bound copy available on request. Each set is a model to study. Your title, argument and conclusions must be your own.
A reference set is most useful at the two points where MAPY students stall. Before the synopsis, it shows how a broad interest becomes a precise thesis statement and a chapter schema. While writing, it shows how a philosophy chapter moves from exposition to argument to criticism, how Chicago footnotes and a primary-secondary bibliography look on the page, and how a conclusion stays modest. Shri Chakradhar Publication has served IGNOU distance learners since 2010, with its own printing press and its own team of writers, and prepares every set against the IGNOU documents cited on this page. Because any reference title can reach more than one student, use it for structure and method, never as text to submit.
If you want material for your theory electives as well, the MAPY help books and solved guess papers are linked below. If you need work built around your own approved theme rather than a reference model, see our customised project service.

IGNOU MAPY Project: Questions Students Ask
Is there a viva for the MAPY dissertation?
The MPYP-001 manual describes no viva. IGNOU’s general project portal instructions say that where a viva-voce applies, it is conducted under the concerned faculty through the Regional Centre, so ask your Regional Centre whether one is scheduled for MPYP-001 in your cycle.
Can I write the MPYP-001 dissertation in Hindi?
IGNOU offers MAPY only in English, while allowing students to write the examinations in Hindi. The manual’s writing unit is built around English, and we found no MPYP-001 rule on the dissertation’s language. Ask the Programme Coordinator in writing before you begin in Hindi.
Does IGNOU provide a free sample for MPYP-001?
The manual itself contains IGNOU’s model: Unit 4.3 reproduces a complete research paper, Physical Immortality: Human Longing, Scientific Basis and Religious Response, as an example of structure and footnoting. IGNOU publishes no sample MAPY dissertation beyond that.
Can I start the MAPY dissertation in my first year?
MPYP-001 is a second-year course on the programme page, so you register for it with your second-year courses. You can still prepare in the first year by reading for your theme and, if you chose it, studying MPYE-007 Research Methodology in Philosophy.
