IGNOU MAANY Project: the two courses behind it

Two codes, one second year

The IGNOU MAANY project is two separate courses: MANE 106 Ethnographic Training, a 4-credit Group B elective in Semester III, and MANP 101 Dissertation, an 8-credit compulsory course in Semester IV. Neither has an assignment or term-end exam. You email a synopsis for approval, carry out fieldwork, then submit the report.

This category holds reference sets for both codes, as PDF soft copies and printed hard copies. The sections below come from the MAANY Programme Guide carrying a 2026 copyright line and the IGNOU Common Prospectus for July 2026, both read in October 2026. Where those documents say nothing, or disagree with each other, the page says so instead of filling the gap.

IGNOU MAANY project reference sets, matched to your stage

Pick an IGNOU MAANY project reference set by course code first, then by stage, then by format. A MANE 106 learner needs ethnographic training material; a MANP 101 learner needs dissertation material in the same sub-field as the approved topic.

A reference set shows how an anthropology synopsis is laid out, how field observations become tables and case descriptions, and how a conclusion is built from them. It is study material. Your synopsis and report rest on your own approved topic and your own fieldwork, because the approval, the cover page and the evaluation all carry your enrolment number.

MA Anthropology learners on MANE 106 and MANP 101 behave much like everyone else we serve: in our records, 70 to 80 percent of the students we see only get moving in the final month before a date falls due. For MAANY that date is usually a fee or upload notice, because the Programme Guide sets no last date for either synopsis.

MAANY or MAAN: check your anthropology codes first

The IGNOU MAANY project codes apply only if your admission record shows the programme code MAANY. Your first-year courses tell you: MAANY learners study MAN 101 to MAN 110. The older MA Anthropology programme, MAAN, used MANI 001, MANI 003 and MANP 001 for its project and dissertation work, under a different Programme Guide with its own route.

Search results for an IGNOU MA anthropology project mix the two constantly, because both programmes are an MA in Anthropology from the School of Social Sciences. A MAANY learner who follows a MAAN page can end up with the wrong code on the cover and the wrong inbox for the synopsis.

A question that reaches us each term from MAANY students: does the synopsis go to the study centre or the Regional Centre? A few have carried it to Maidan Garhi by hand and had it turned away. The MAANY Programme Guide sends both synopses by email, MANE 106 to mane106@ignou.ac.in and MANP 101 to manp101@ignou.ac.in, so no counter is involved at this stage.

On MAAN? Your sets are in the MAAN project category and the MAAN printed project category.

Where the 2026 MAANY Programme Guide contradicts itself

Anyone preparing an IGNOU MAANY project should know that the official Programme Guide prints three statements that clash with other lines in the same document. Most pages online copy one side and drop the other. Here are both, with the page numbers of the PDF on eGyanKosh.

Three places the MAANY guide disagrees with itself

TopicOne line saysAnother line saysHow to act
Viva for the dissertationPage 10: there is no viva voce examination for the dissertationPage 49, MANP 101 course outline: the report is evaluated by marking it and conducting a viva voceWrite the dissertation so you can explain every chapter aloud, and follow any viva call IGNOU sends
Ethnographic training codePage 10: Ethnographic Training (MANE 006)Course table, evaluation section and email address: MANE 106Use MANE 106; the July 2026 prospectus lists no MANE 006 for MAANY
Dissertation code at submissionPage 10: Project Report (MANE 106) and Dissertation (MANP 001)Course table and email address: MANP 101Use MANP 101; MANP 001 is the older MAAN code

Whether a viva applies is one of the questions MANP 101 students put to us most often, and the guide above explains the confusion: it answers both ways. Until IGNOU settles it in a notice, the safe preparation is the same in either case.

If the answer matters for your plans, write to the programme coordinator at maany@ignou.ac.in and keep the reply with your approval.

MANE 106, MANP 101 or both: which do you owe?

Every learner on the IGNOU MAANY project route owes MANP 101, because the dissertation is compulsory in Semester IV. MANE 106 applies only if you registered it as one of your two Group B electives in Semester III. Four checks settle it.

  1. Programme code: MAN 101 to MAN 110 in your first year means MAANY. Continue.
  2. Semester III registration: Group B lists MANE 105 Ethnography, MANE 106 Ethnographic Training, MANE 107 Urban Anthropology and MANE 108 Visual Anthropology, and you take two. MANE 106 on your list means one synopsis and one project report for that course. If your two picks are theory courses, there is no Semester III project.
  3. Semester IV: MANP 101 sits there with the MANL 101 practical and one interdisciplinary course, MGS 109 or MED 002. Every MAANY learner prepares a MANP 101 synopsis and dissertation.
  4. Your stage today: No approval yet: you need a synopsis. Approval received: fieldwork and the report. Report written: the submission route further down this page.

A learner who took MANE 106 therefore carries two independent approvals and two reports through the second year. Keep two folders, two email threads and two field diaries from the first day.

MANE 106 ethnographic training: what the course outline asks for

For the IGNOU MAANY project, MANE 106 Ethnographic Training is the applied course of Group B. The Programme Guide (page 44) says it tests the fieldwork skills of a learner interested in social and cultural anthropology, and that the course reaches you as a manual covering what fieldwork is, how to conduct it and its ethical concerns.

The outline lists what the manual guides you through: designing a project proposal, reading the literature, collecting data, writing field notes, keeping a field diary, using audio and video, analysing findings and writing a conclusion. Its learning outcomes name participant observation, case study and in-depth interviewing as the methods, and they put fieldwork after approval of the proposal.

Many synopses and reports we see lean only on secondary data: census tables, published studies, news items. A MANE 106 outline that asks for field notes and a field diary cannot be met that way; published material belongs in your literature review, while the findings come from your own visits.

Evaluator remarks that students show us often ask for the study to be based in the student’s own city or locality. For MANE 106 that request fits the method, since an ethnographic exercise depends on returning to the same place again and again.

MANE 105 Ethnography is the theory course beside it, with an assignment and a TEE. Taking both is allowed, and the reading in MANE 105 supports a MANE 106 report, though the guide does not require the pair.

MANE 106 project topics that fit four credits

A MANE 106 project works best when the topic is small, local and observable: one setting, one group, one recurring activity you can watch, join and record over several visits. The directions below are our editorial suggestions, not an IGNOU list.

  • A weekly haat as a social space: who sells, who buys, how credit and bargaining work
  • Preparations for one annual festival in a single mohalla or village ward
  • Division of work in families running roadside eateries along one stretch of highway
  • Daily routines of domestic workers commuting into one residential colony
  • Kinship terms and visiting patterns among households of one migrant community in a single settlement

Students often believe they must copy an IGNOU topic word for word. The MAANY Programme Guide prints no topic list for MANE 106; its outline speaks of a topic of the learner’s choice with a socio-cultural bearing, so the choice is yours to make with your guide.

Picking a topic is the point where MAANY students tell us they feel most lost, and many add that no class ever taught them to write a synopsis. One IGNOU course does: the MAN 108 learning outcomes include writing a synopsis, doing fieldwork and presenting a research report, so reopen that block before drafting for MANE 106.

MANP 101 dissertation: scope, credits and freedom of topic

The IGNOU MAANY project reaches its larger half in Semester IV. MANP 101 Dissertation carries 8 credits and 100 marks, has no assignment or term-end exam, and asks for a research study in any sub-field of anthropology. The course outline (page 49) calls fieldwork a vital feature and says the course gives the learner freedom to examine human concerns in any desired arena.

That freedom is wider than many students assume. MAANY covers physical and biological, social and cultural, and archaeological anthropology, with applied, environmental and public health courses in Semester II. A dissertation may be a growth study, a health-seeking behaviour survey or a heritage documentation project, provided your guide works in that area and your methods suit the question.

MANL 101, the 8-credit practical in the same semester, is a separate course with its own examination at the Regional Centre or study centre. Our MANL 101 practical page covers it.

A MANP 101 synopsis can slip by weeks when the guide wants several rounds of revision. Plan for that in Semester IV, which also carries the MANL 101 practical sessions.

Pick the sub-field first and the place second. A workable MANP 101 topic names a group, a location and one question.

Synopses built from widely shared material or a single common source tend to arrive with the same topic as many other students’ work, and a duplicate topic is a frequent reason for return. Naming your own village, colony or school in the MANP 101 title is the plainest way to keep it distinct.

Choosing a mentor for your IGNOU MAANY project

For an IGNOU MAANY project, the Programme Guide (page 10) says the learner needs to choose a mentor, supervisor or guide, and that the details on project and mentor selection are in the respective manuals. It does not print the eligibility criteria itself, so ask your Regional Centre or study centre for the MANE 106 and MANP 101 manuals before you approach anyone.

Most students who bring us a MAANY synopsis have not read the guide eligibility criteria, and some have already chosen a guide who does not meet them. Read the criteria in the manual first, then ask.

MAANY learners who ask the study centre coordinator to allot a MANP 101 guide usually come back with none. That matches the Programme Guide, which leaves the choice of mentor to the learner.

Many then turn to a relative or an outside contact before anyone checks eligibility. Match the person against the MANP 101 manual’s criteria before asking, and for a biological or forensic topic look for someone trained in that branch.

MANP 101 synopsis: parts the course outline points to

An IGNOU MAANY project synopsis follows the structure in the course manual, which takes precedence over anything here. The Programme Guide lists no synopsis headings. The MANP 101 and MANE 106 learning outcomes still name what the work must show: a selected research problem, its aims and objectives, a review of relevant literature, a proposal, ethical considerations, and fieldwork after approval.

In general research practice, an anthropology proposal also states the study area and population, the methods and tools (observation, interview schedule, genealogy, anthropometry and so on), and a realistic timeline. Match the manual’s headings and order wherever they differ.

Many synopses we read miss a core part such as the methodology or the objectives. Hypotheses are a separate case: the MANP 101 outline does not ask for them, and a descriptive or ethnographic study may not test one, so include a hypothesis only where your design really tests it.

Returned MANP 101 synopses that students show us often lack a rationale for the study, or the interview schedule or questionnaire the fieldwork will rely on. Attach the tool you will actually carry into the field.

Another gap in returned MAANY synopses: no stated period of study, or no chapter scheme. A plan that names the months of fieldwork and a draft chapter list reads as a dissertation that can finish within Semester IV.

Emailing the IGNOU MAANY synopsis

The IGNOU MAANY project synopsis is approved by email, one address per course. MANE 106 goes to mane106@ignou.ac.in and MANP 101 to manp101@ignou.ac.in. The general address maany@ignou.ac.in belongs to the programme coordinator and handles programme queries, not approvals.

  • One synopsis per email, one email per course. A combined file for both codes does not fit two separate approvals.
  • Write the course code, your enrolment number and your name in the subject line.
  • Send from the email address you will keep using until the result.

Many students keep no proof that the synopsis went in. With MAANY the proof is the sent mail itself, attachment included, so file it in a folder named for MANE 106 or MANP 101.

We are often asked which documents travel with the synopsis and whether it should be bound or filed. Binding does not arise for MAANY, since the synopsis is an attachment. Students also ask what a proforma is; some attach none and some attach a form from another programme. The MAANY Programme Guide lists no enclosure and names no proforma, so add only what your MANE 106 or MANP 101 manual asks for.

Waiting for approval from the two course inboxes

The guide’s instruction is short: on receipt of the approval, undertake the study. Fieldwork before approval risks building a report on a plan that may change.

From what we see at our desk, a synopsis approval tends to take two to three months to come through. The MAANY Programme Guide states no period for MANE 106 or MANP 101 approvals, so read that range as our experience, not an IGNOU commitment.

Most students have no idea whom to write to when a month or two passes in silence. Reply in the same thread to the course address you used, and if that brings nothing, write to the programme coordinator at maany@ignou.ac.in.

We have seen MAANY sessions run out because no approval reached the student. A dated follow-up to the MANE 106 or MANP 101 address after a few weeks costs nothing and leaves a written record.

Approval with comments, or a returned synopsis

An IGNOU MAANY project approval may come back as a plain yes, a yes with points to address, or a request to revise and resend. Treat the comments as part of the approval, because the same approval travels inside the final report.

Most MANE 106 and MANP 101 approvals we see arrive with correction or modification points attached.

The commonest point asks for a more recent review of literature. On MAANY themes such as migration, urban work or public health, add recent studies before fieldwork starts.

When asked to resend, many students forget the earlier version. The MAANY Programme Guide sets no resubmission rule, so we suggest replying in the same thread with the revised file, the returned version and the evaluator’s comments together.

Fieldwork and the data chapter

Both IGNOU MAANY project courses put fieldwork at the centre: the MANE 106 and MANP 101 outlines each say data are collected after approval of the proposal, then analysed and interpreted against the aims and objectives.

Some students write the analysis chapter on assumed figures without going to the field. In MANE 106 and MANP 101 that undoes the purpose of the course, since the data have to come from your own visits, interviews and measurements.

In many reports the analysis chapter is too thin to carry the objectives and method promised in the synopsis. List your MANP 101 objectives, then check that each one has its own table, case or observation in the analysis.

Approval comments often have to be worked into the report, and many students skip them. Keep the MANE 106 or MANP 101 approval mail open while writing and tick off each point.

IGNOU dissertation format for MAANY: page order and style

The IGNOU MAANY project has no format printed in the Programme Guide; it says the manual guides the design of the proposal and the report. Use the manual’s chapter plan as the format. Where it is silent, the order below is common practice for an anthropology report, not an IGNOU rule.

  1. Cover page: title as approved, course code (MANE 106 or MANP 101), name, enrolment number, Regional Centre, guide’s name, month and year
  2. Copy of the approval for that course
  3. Declaration and certificates the manual or upload notice asks for
  4. Acknowledgements and contents
  5. Introduction: problem, aims and objectives, rationale
  6. Review of literature
  7. Study area, population and methods, with the ethical steps taken
  8. Findings and analysis, chapter by chapter
  9. Conclusion
  10. References, then appendices (interview schedule, maps, photographs with consent)

Once approval arrives, many students ask us which format the report should follow. For MAANY the honest answer is the course manual, because the Programme Guide prescribes none.

Page order is the next question we hear from MAANY students. The list above is the sequence we suggest when the manual gives none.

Many bibliographies we see mix styles and do not match the works cited in the chapters. The MAANY guide sets no citation style, so pick one consistent style for the whole MANP 101 reference list.

Literature review and references in an IGNOU MA anthropology dissertation

Both learning outcome lists ask you to review literature of relevance to your topic. For an IGNOU MA anthropology dissertation, that means ethnographies and studies of your group or region, the theory from your MAANY courses, and recent work that shows the topic is current.

In many MAANY synopses the literature review discusses studies that are missing from the reference list, while the list carries books the review does not mention. Check the two against each other line by line.

Many MANP 101 reports carry a dated literature review, and in our experience that costs marks.

Many students lift material from websites and submit it without a plagiarism check. Paraphrase, cite, and run the check before the MANP 101 file leaves your hands.

Time pressure, AI drafts and repeated topics

Three habits produce most of the weak anthropology synopses we see. Each is avoidable with a few weeks of margin.

Many students leave the synopsis so late that no time remains to write it themselves. A MANE 106 synopsis needs at least one visit to the field site before you can describe it honestly.

More and more students now prepare the synopsis draft in ChatGPT or a similar AI tool without opening the course manual, and the plan then misses what MANE 106 or MANP 101 actually asks for.

Some submit an AI-written synopsis or report unchanged, which is one reason the same MAANY topics keep reappearing.

Documents to attach to the IGNOU MAANY project report

For the IGNOU MAANY project, the Programme Guide names one attachment without exception: a copy of the respective approval goes with the MANE 106 report and with the MANP 101 dissertation. IGNOU’s online project upload instructions also list the approved proforma, the synopsis, the guide’s bio-data and an originality certificate signed and dated by student and guide, wherever applicable.

Many reports come back because a required document is missing. For MAANY start with the one item the guide names, the approval copy, then add whatever the current upload notice lists.

Some students post the report with the originality certificate still unsigned by the guide. Get it signed and dated before the MANE 106 or MANP 101 file is printed or uploaded.

Many leave the interview schedule or questionnaire out of the MANP 101 appendix, although it is the tool the approval was based on.

IGNOU project submission for MANE 106 and MANP 101

The IGNOU MAANY project route ends at headquarters. The Programme Guide says the MANE 106 project report and the MANP 101 dissertation go to the Registrar, Student Evaluation Division (SED), IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi 110068. If the University provides an upload link, you upload there only and send no hard copy.

The upload portal address changes with each cycle. Open it from the current notice on ignou.ac.in, not from a saved link; when this page was prepared, no December 2026 upload notice had appeared.

Some students email the finished MANE 106 or MANP 101 report to SED or to the course inbox. IGNOU’s upload instructions say reports received by email are not considered.

Many are unsure how many copies to send, and where. The MAANY guide names the Registrar, SED, as the place but states no number of copies, so follow the notice in force when you post.

Some skip proof of dispatch. Send the MAANY report by a trackable post service, or save the portal acknowledgement.

Project fee for the IGNOU MAANY project: Rs 300 and Rs 500

The July 2026 Common Prospectus sets the project evaluation fee, from the January 2023 admission cycle, at Rs 300 for project work up to 4 credits and Rs 500 above 4 credits. For the IGNOU MAANY project that means Rs 300 for MANE 106 and Rs 500 for MANP 101, paid with the term-end examination form. Examination fees once paid are not refundable or adjustable.

IGNOU’s announcements page lists 30 November 2026 as the last date for project, internship and practical course fees for the December 2026 TEE, paid through the Samarth portal login.

The two fee amounts confuse students more than any other figure. Credits decide it: MANE 106 at 4 credits sits in the Rs 300 slab, MANP 101 at 8 credits in the Rs 500 slab.

Many are unsure whether a published last date covers the synopsis or the report. The MAANY guide prints no synopsis date; the December 2026 notice concerns the fee, and an upload notice concerns the finished report.

Dates, and the second-year rhythm

The IGNOU MAANY project sits inside a programme whose examinations run on an annual basis: the Programme Guide (page 7) says the third and fourth semester examinations are conducted together after the second year. Plan both synopses early in the second year, so MANE 106 fieldwork does not collide with MANP 101 fieldwork and the MANL 101 practical.

MAANY runs for a minimum of two years and a maximum of four, according to the Programme Guide and the programme page, so a delayed dissertation can still be completed within the maximum period under the re-registration rules of your session.

Many students send the synopsis in the final week before the date they are aiming at. With MAANY that leaves no room for the approval wait and the fieldwork that must follow it.

Many expect IGNOU to push each last date back by a month and hold back for the second date. Some dates do move (the December 2026 assignment date was extended to 31 October 2026), but nothing promises the same for a MANP 101 fee or upload.

Many think synopsis and report go in together on one date, and post both unsigned by the guide. MAANY runs in two stages: synopsis by email first, then the report to SED after approval, with the approval copy inside.

Binding, marks and the no re-evaluation rule

For the IGNOU MAANY project the marks are final in a way TEE marks are not. The Programme Guide (pages 22 and 23) allows re-evaluation and improvement in the TEE only, not in project or dissertation work. That makes the report you send the only version that counts.

MAANY uses a numerical marking scheme, and the guide’s evaluation section says MANE 106 is assessed on the project report submitted and MANP 101 on the dissertation submitted.

Some students spiral-bind the final report. The MAANY guide names no binding style; for a posted copy, a firm binding that keeps pages in order is common practice.

Some attach the whole stack of filled questionnaires at the back. The MAANY guide is silent here; a blank copy of the schedule in the appendix is common practice, with the filled forms kept safely at home.

IGNOU MAANY project questions students search

What MA Anthropology students search before starting

Can I write the IGNOU anthropology project in Hindi?

The MAANY Programme Guide and the July 2026 Common Prospectus both say the programme is offered in English and Hindi, while the MAANY programme page on ignou.ac.in shows English. None of these says which language the MANE 106 report or MANP 101 dissertation must use. Ask your Regional Centre or check the course manual before you write, and keep the synopsis and the report in the same language.

Is there an official MAANY dissertation sample?

The Programme Guide includes no sample synopsis or sample dissertation, and we found none published by IGNOU for MANE 106 or MANP 101. Before relying on any file labelled as a MAANY sample, check that it carries MANE 106 or MANP 101 and not the MAAN code MANP 001.

Can I use the same topic for MANE 106 and MANP 101?

The Programme Guide does not address it. The two courses are approved and evaluated separately, so a MANP 101 dissertation that repeats a MANE 106 report invites questions. Using the MANE 106 field site as groundwork for a different MANP 101 question is the safer path, explained to your guide.

Who answers IGNOU MAANY project queries?

The July 2026 Common Prospectus names Dr. Palla Venkatramana as MAANY Programme Coordinator, at maany@ignou.ac.in and 011-29572729. Synopsis approvals go to the two course addresses instead, and submission and result queries belong with SED.

Before you send the first MAANY synopsis

Start the IGNOU MAANY project with five checks, in this order:

  1. Confirm MAANY on your admission record and MANE 106 on your Semester III list, if you took it.
  2. Get the MANE 106 and MANP 101 manuals and read the mentor criteria.
  3. Choose a topic that names a place, a group and one question, and visit the place once.
  4. Draft one synopsis per course, matched to the manual’s headings.
  5. Email each to its own address and file the sent mail.
