IGNOU MJML 222 Practical in the MAJMC second year
Where MJML-222 sits in year two
The IGNOU MJML 222 Practical is Practical: Research Methodology, a 6-credit second-year MAJMC course taken in place of the MJMT-021 Internship. You complete eight activities built on MJM-031 Communication Research Methods, put them in one practical file and submit it to your study centre, where the file carries all 100 marks.
Section 3.62 of the July 2026 Common Prospectus places MJML 222 in year two of MAJMC, beside MJM 031, with the line “Choose any one: 6 credits” joining it to MJMT 021 Internship. A second choice follows it: MJMP 120 Major Project Work (Dissertation) or MJMP 022 Research Portfolio. MAJEM learners see the same MJML 222 or MJMT 021 choice in section 3.64. So this MAJMC research methodology practical is optional in one sense and compulsory in another: you either do it or the internship.
The manual is short and direct. There are no face-to-face classes for this course, so attendance is not an issue, and you are advised to follow sessions on Gyan Darshan, Gyan Vani, Gyanadhara and the School of Journalism and New Media Studies (SOJNMS) Facebook page.
Across practical courses we watch the file cause more worry than the theory papers, and learners who handle their term-end papers well can still stall here. In MJML-222 that file is the only thing the examiner marks.
Many learners tell us they noticed the practical component only late in the session. For MAJMC year two, settle the MJML-222 or MJMT-021 choice early; the prospectus lists the two as “Choose any one: 6 credits”.

Eight activities, 100 marks, and the MJM-031 unit behind each
The IGNOU MJML 222 Practical is a set of eight tasks, and the manual prints a second table telling you which MJM-031 unit supports each one. We have joined the two tables and added the unit titles from the MAJMC Programme Guide, so you can open the right unit before you start a task.
Activity, marks and MJM-031 unit
| No. | What the MJML-222 activity asks for | Marks | MJM-031 unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Survey questionnaire, at least 20 questions, with closed-ended, open-ended, multiple-response, ranking and rating-scale types | 20 | Unit 7, Survey Method |
| 2 | Review of at least 10 research papers on one topic, about 200 words each | 20 | Unit 5, Review of Literature |
| 3 | Reference list for the activity 2 papers in one standard citation style | 10 | Unit 16, Report Writing |
| 4 | Types of sampling methods shown as infographics | 5 | Unit 4, Sampling Methods |
| 5 | Hours spent on social media for entertainment, asked of at least 30 people; frequency table and mean | 15 | Unit 14, Basic Statistical Analysis |
| 6 | Research objective(s) for semi-structured interviews, then at least ten interview questions | 15 | Unit 10, Interviews Techniques |
| 7 | Major components of a research report, listed in the correct sequence | 5 | Unit 16, Report Writing |
| 8 | At least eight questions to keep in mind while observing a television newsroom | 10 | Unit 12, Observation Method |
Built from the MJML-222 Practical Manual and the MJM-031 unit list in the MAJMC Programme Guide, both read in November 2026. The unit titles are the guide’s wording.
Two things stand out once the tables sit together. Unit 16 feeds two activities (3 and 7), worth 15 marks between them. And activities 1 and 2 alone carry 40 of the 100 marks, which is why the next section spends its time there.
Writing is where practical files lose the most marks, and it is also the part a learner can repair. Six of the eight MJML-222 activities ask you to write questions, reviews or lists, so the repair happens on the page itself.
In many research write-ups we find references in no consistent style, and they do not match the sources actually used. MJML-222 gives that problem its own row in the table: activity 3, worth 10 marks, is one standard citation style applied to the activity 2 papers.
Some students assume a research topic has to be lifted word for word from a printed list. The MJML-222 manual prints no topic list: activities 1 and 2 leave the research topic to your choice.
What do the first two activities of the IGNOU MJML 222 Practical ask?
In the IGNOU MJML 222 Practical, activity 1 is a survey questionnaire of at least 20 questions on a research topic you choose. The manual names five question types the questionnaire should include: closed-ended, open-ended, multiple-response, ranking and rating-scale. A questionnaire with 20 yes-or-no items meets the count and misses the brief, so plan the mix first and then write the questions around your topic. Unit 7 of MJM-031, Survey Method, is the unit the manual points to.
Activity 2 asks you to identify and review at least ten research papers on a selected topic, about 200 words for each paper, roughly 2,000 words in total. The manual does not ask for one topic across activities 1 and 2. Using one topic for both keeps your reading in one place. A short review that states the paper’s question, method, sample and finding, and then says what it means for your topic, does more than a summary of the abstract.
Across practicals we read write-ups that only describe what was done, entry after entry. Evaluators want the link to a method or idea from the course; for the MJML-222 paper reviews, that link is MJM-031 Unit 5, Review of Literature.
In our experience a dated literature review costs marks in research work. In MJML-222 activity 2, the papers you choose (at least ten) decide how current your review looks, so check the publication years before you start writing.
We have seen research write-ups sent back for running well past the length a course sets. The MJML-222 manual sets about 200 words per paper review, so ten reviews land near 2,000 words.
MJM-031 books and guides for the research practical
The manual’s first instruction is to study the MJM-031 course material carefully, because each activity applies one of its units. These are the MJM-031 and MAJMC titles on our shelf. They are theory study material; none of them is an MJML-222 practical file, and we do not sell one.
MJM-031 titles to read before the eight activities
| If you need | Title |
|---|---|
| MJM-031 book, 5th Edition | IGNOU MJM 31 Study Material and Book (MAJMC 2nd Year), 5th Edition |
| MJM-031 in Hindi | IGNOU MJM 31 Study Material and Book (MAJMC), Hindi |
| The MJM-031 assignment | IGNOU MJM 31 Solved Assignment 2025-26 or the Hindi medium edition |
| MJM-031 exam revision | IGNOU MJM 31 Guess Paper Solved PDF (MAJMC), Hindi and MJM 31 Previous Years Solved Question Papers (June 2023) |
| The other second-year courses | MAJMC solved assignments, MAJMC guess papers and MAJMC previous year solved papers |
Learners schooled in Hindi often find technical writing in English hard, and English-medium learners who write in Hindi can miss the terms. The MJML-222 manual sets no language rule; MAJMC runs in English, Hindi and Tamil, and the MJM 31 book above also comes in a Hindi edition.
The learners who get through practicals calmly start early, confirm the rules at their own study centre, keep dated notes and can explain each page themselves. For MJML-222 that starts with reading the MJM-031 units in the table before any activity is drafted.
Activities 3 to 8: references, sampling, a frequency table, interviews, report order, a newsroom
The remaining six tasks of the IGNOU MJML 222 Practical are smaller. Activity 3 depends on activity 2, so finish the reviews first; the rest can be done in any order.
- Activity 3 (10 marks). A reference list for the papers reviewed in activity 2, in any standard citation style; the manual gives APA, MLA, Chicago and Harvard as examples. One style, applied the same way to each entry, is the whole task.
- Activity 4 (5 marks). The types of sampling methods, presented with infographics. Unit 4 of MJM-031 gives the methods; the infographic is your own drawing or design.
- Activity 5 (15 marks). Ask at least 30 relatives, classmates, friends or colleagues how many hours they spend on social media for entertainment. Build a frequency table from their answers and calculate the mean. With raw hours, the mean is the total hours divided by the number of people asked. With grouped classes (for example 0-1, 1-2 and 2-3 hours), multiply each class mid-point by its frequency, add the products and divide by the total frequency. Show the working along with the answer.
- Activity 6 (15 marks). First write the research objective or objectives for which you would choose semi-structured interviews, then at least ten questions for those interviews.
- Activity 7 (5 marks). The major components of a research report, in the correct sequence, from Unit 16.
- Activity 8 (10 marks). At least eight questions you would keep in mind while studying a television newsroom by the observation method, from Unit 12.
Students regularly ask us what order a research report should follow. In MJML-222 that order is itself marked: activity 7 carries 5 marks for listing the report’s components in sequence, using MJM-031 Unit 16.
Practical write-ups usually expect parts in a set order, and a missing part costs marks. MJML-222 activity 6 has two parts in a set order: the research objectives first, then at least ten semi-structured interview questions.
Typed is allowed; copied is not
The IGNOU MJML 222 Practical lets you use a computer. The manual says typed submissions are acceptable, which differs from the first-year MJML-220 print portfolio, where the manual asks for the written work by hand. What the MJML-222 manual does not allow is copying: learners are advised to make their own Practical File, and practical work may be rejected if evidence of copying or other malpractice is found.
Ready-made practical files do circulate online, and some reach a study centre with just a new name and enrolment number on top; matching files from one centre stand out at once. The MJML-222 manual says such work may be rejected.
Some learners fill a data table with figures they did not collect. MJML-222 activity 5 asks you to put one question to at least 30 real people, so your frequency table and mean have to come from their answers.
We often see web material handed in without any check on where it came from. For the MJML-222 paper reviews, read each paper yourself and write its 200 words in your own sentences, citing it in the activity 3 list.
MJML-122 and MJML-22: earlier codes of the research methodology practical
The research methodology practical has appeared under three codes with the same title. The current IGNOU MJML 222 Practical appears in the July 2026 prospectus and the MAJMC Programme Guide, and its manual is listed on eGyanKosh with a 2026 issue date. The MJML-120 manual (copyright 2023) lists an earlier second-year course, MJML-122 Practical: Research Methodology, 6 credits. Older still, eGyanKosh holds MJML-22 Practical (Research Methodology), issued in 2021 as a single 42.77 MB file, and IGNOU’s online LMS shows the MJML-022 Practical (Research Methodology) course page.
In this month’s search results, an upload titled MJML-222 was described as the MJML-022 handbook. We could not read the older handbooks in this session, so this page does not say what they asked for. What matters for you: a sample or guide you use should name MJML-222 and the eight activities in the table above.
Learners tell us the handbook shows one format, a counsellor suggests another, and a senior or a file online offers a third. For MJML-222 the document to follow is the 2026 manual on eGyanKosh, with any update from your study centre or Regional Centre.
Across programmes, practical information reaches learners late and varies by centre, and the file is treated as a formatting job when it should show applied learning. MJML-222 makes the point clearly: each activity names the MJM-031 unit you are meant to apply.
Many students tell us there are no IGNOU classes that teach how to do research work. For MJML-222 the manual says there are no face-to-face classes, and it points to sessions on this practical on Gyan Darshan, Gyan Vani, Gyanadhara and other online platforms, plus the SOJNMS Facebook page.
Two questions learners search about this practical
From Search Console and this month’s search results
Where is the MJML 222 practical manual?
On eGyanKosh. The MAJMC Programme Guide says the MJML-222 practical manual is available only in digital form on eGyanKosh, and the eGyanKosh item “MJML-222 Practical : Research Methodology” (issue date 2026) holds the manual as MJML-222.pdf. The IGNOU MAJMC programme page links manuals for MJML-220, MJML-221 and MJML-023 but not for MJML-222, so search eGyanKosh by the course code.
Learners sometimes act on what a friend at another study centre was told and then find their own centre works differently. The MJML-222 manual is the same document at each centre, yet it sends you to your own study centre and Regional Centre for updated last dates.
How do I check IGNOU practical status for MJML-222?
Marks for the IGNOU MJML 222 Practical start at your study centre: the award list annexed to the manual records the examiner’s marks out of 100, signed by the examiner and the study centre coordinator, and is sent to the Registrar, SED, IGNOU, Maidan Garhi. For practical marks, section 18 of the July 2026 prospectus lists practicalsed@ignou.ac.in and 011-29572212. Keep your enrolment number and submission receipt ready when you write.
Practical marks often reach the grade card after theory marks, and a final-year learner’s degree status can stay pending, which can hold up a job offer or another admission. MJML-222 sits in the final MAJMC year, so check its status soon after results.
“Will a viva follow the file?” is something learners ask us on many courses. For MJML-222 the manual answers it: the evaluation has no viva-voce component, so the status you are waiting for is the mark on your practical file.
What goes into the MJML 222 practical file
The IGNOU MJML 222 Practical file is compiled in a folder, with your details on the front page. The manual’s submission list gives five items, and its instructions name the nine cover details.
The MJML-222 submission list, in the manual’s order
- Cover page: Name, Enrolment number, Programme Code, Course Code, Study Centre Code, Regional Centre name and code, Email id, Phone number and Address.
- IGNOU Identity Card.
- Examination fee receipt of MJML 222.
- The table of eight activities given in the practical manual.
- All eight activities together in one file.
Keep a copy of the whole practical file with you; the manual says so twice.
Title pages often carry a wrong enrolment number or wrong centre details. The MJML-222 cover asks for nine details; check the enrolment number, Study Centre Code and Regional Centre name and code against your IGNOU ID card.
Plenty of students are unsure which documents travel with their work, and the file goes in short. For MJML-222 the list is the five items above, and it names no certificate or signed form.
Some students spiral-bind their work without checking what the course says. The MJML-222 manual asks you to compile the work in a folder and keep the eight activities in one file; it names no binding.
IGNOU MJML 222 Practical fee, last dates and the 40 percent mark
You fill the examination form for the IGNOU MJML 222 Practical like any other course of the programme, though its term-end examination is the evaluation of your practical file. The July 2026 prospectus sets the practical examination fee at Rs 300 up to 4 credits and Rs 500 above 4 credits (the rule from the January 2023 admission cycle), paid with the term-end examination form and neither refundable nor adjustable. MJML-222 has 6 credits. The IGNOU programme page labels its course type “Theory (6 Credits)”, so check the amount the online form shows for MJML 222 before paying. The manual adds that the fee is valid only for the examination it was paid for, and suggests paying only when your file is ready.
There are two last dates a year for practical work: 30 June for the June term-end examination and 31 December for the December one. The MAJMC Programme Guide says you can appear for the term-end examination after one year of study, and the programme page gives a maximum duration of 48 months; the manual asks you to finish this practical before your registration expires. The file is marked out of 100, and the minimum needed to complete the course is 40 percent.
Our records show that 70 to 80 percent of learners start work only in the final month ahead of a submission date. For MJML-222 the manual gives two dates a year, 30 June and 31 December, so a file begun only in December is already in that final month.
Some students wait, expecting the last date to move by a month. The MJML-222 manual promises no extension; it asks you to stay in touch with your study centre and Regional Centre for updated dates.
Students often confuse the Rs 300 and Rs 500 amounts. MJML-222 carries 6 credits, which puts it in the prospectus slab above 4 credits.
Where to hand in the IGNOU MJML 222 Practical file
Your study centre receives the IGNOU MJML 222 Practical file for evaluation. If you face a problem at the study centre, the manual sends you to your Regional Centre. Learners in online programmes submit through the LMS, or as the Regional Centre or Programme Coordinator directs.
Some students cannot tell whether practical work belongs at the study centre, the Regional Centre or Maidan Garhi. For MJML-222 the manual names the study centre, with the Regional Centre as the place to turn if you face a problem at the study centre.
With online submission we see half-finished uploads, loose files in place of one, and wrong first-page details. For online MJML-222 learners the manual names the LMS and still wants the eight activities together in one file.
Learners who keep no receipt have nothing to show if marks go missing. Ask your study centre for an acknowledgement when you hand in the MJML-222 file, and keep the copy of the file the manual tells you to keep.
A practical file that follows the eight-activity table, in your own words and with real data in activity 5, is what the IGNOU MJML 222 Practical asks of you. If your second-year choice is the MJMP-120 dissertation, see our MJMP-120 dissertation guide on ignouproject.com.
