IGNOU MJML 023 Practical: the digital media portfolio in MAJMC year one
MJML-023 in one MAJMC paragraph
The IGNOU MJML 023 Practical is MJML-023 Practical: Digital Media, a 6-credit first-year course in MAJMC and PGJMC. Its manual lists seven activities, from five story ideas to a review of a news portal, compiled as one portfolio and marked out of 100, with 40 as the minimum passing mark.
In the first year of MAJMC, the July 2026 Common Prospectus lists three practicals of 6 credits each, MJML 220 Practical: Print, MJML 221 Practical: Audiovisual and MJML 023 Practical: Digital Media, and asks you to choose any two. PGJMC and MAJEM print the same choice in their first year. The MJML-023 manual, applicable from January 2025, is written for PGJMC/PGJMCOL and MAJMC/MAJMCOL learners, and inside it the course is called Digital Journalism Practicals.
Two codes sit close to this one. MJM-023 is the theory course Broadcast and Online Journalism, with its own assignment. MNML-012 Digital Journalism Practical belongs to MAJDM and PGDIDM, different programmes, and carries 8 credits. The MAJMC programme page also expects learners to have access to a computer and the internet, which this practical relies on throughout, from web links to a YouTube upload and an X account.
Across programmes, the practical part worries students far more than the theory papers, and people who pass their term-end exams with ease often get stuck on it. In MJML-023 the practical part is the entire course: the manual evaluates the portfolio for 100 marks.

Choosing the digital media practical as one of your two
Each of the three first-year practicals has its own manual, and they differ more than the shared 6 credits suggest. Read all three before you settle on your pair.

Plenty of students only find out about a practical component late in the session. With MJML-023 the choice comes first: the prospectus makes you pick two of the three first-year practicals, so the manuals are worth reading before the session is under way.
Three causes stand out at our desk across programmes: news of the rules arrives late and varies by centre, practicals assume time and presence that distance learners often lack, and the file gets treated as a formatting job when it should show applied learning. The MJML-023 manual prints no session or attendance rule, so the presence part of the second cause does not arise here.
30 June, 31 December and the Rs 500 fee
The IGNOU MJML 023 Practical has two last dates a year in its manual: 30 June for the June Term End Examination and 31 December for the December one. The manual asks you to stay in touch with your Study Centre and Regional Centre for the latest final dates, and names the Facebook pages of the School of Journalism and New Media Studies and of IGNOU for updates.
The fee comes from the prospectus. The July 2026 Common Prospectus charges Rs 300 for a practical examination of up to 4 credits and Rs 500 above 4 credits, paid with the Term-End Examination form, and says an examination fee once paid is neither refundable nor adjustable. MJML-023 carries 6 credits, so its slab is Rs 500.
In our records, 70 to 80 percent of the learners who reach us get going only in the final month before a submission falls due. For MJML-023 that final month is June or December, because the manual’s two dates are 30 June and 31 December.
A belief we hear often is that IGNOU will push each last date back by a month, so students hold off until the second date. We cannot say whether any MJML-023 date will move; the manual itself tells you to check the final dates with your Study Centre and Regional Centre.
The 300 and 500 rupee amounts get mixed up by many of the students we speak to. MJML-023 falls in the Rs 500 slab of the prospectus, since the course is above 4 credits.
Why the IGNOU MJML 023 Practical has to come from your own accounts
The IGNOU MJML 023 Practical asks for work that lives on platforms in your name. Activity 5 tells you to record a news story on your own mobile device, upload it to your YouTube account and share the link in your portfolio. Activity 6 tells you to create an account on X with your enrolment number and share your stories there. The manual also says that every effort of yours is counted, and that two evaluations are not allowed for any single work or part of it.
That makes MJML-023 a poor fit for borrowed material. Pages returned in this month’s searches offer finished MJML-023 stories, backgrounders and reviews; none of them can be your YouTube upload or your enrolment-number X account, and the written parts would sit next to those accounts in one portfolio.
Ready-made practical files circulate online, and some learners hand them in after changing nothing but the name and enrolment number; identical work from several students at one centre stands out at once. In MJML-023, the YouTube link and the X account opened with your enrolment number are part of what you hand in, so the portfolio points back to your own accounts.
Some students hand in AI-written text without changing it, which is one reason the same topics keep appearing across submissions. For MJML-023, each story idea has to name its own news angle and at least three sources.
Many students paste material from websites and submit it without a plagiarism check. The MJML-023 backgrounder draws on at least 10 resources, so list those links at the bottom as the manual asks and write the story in your own sentences.
Study centre, Regional Centre or LMS?
For the IGNOU MJML 023 Practical, the manual sends the Production Portfolio to your Study Centre for evaluation, and tells you to contact your Regional Centre if you face a problem at the Study Centre. Learners in the online programmes submit the portfolio through the LMS. In both cases the manual asks you to keep a copy of the practical work with you.
Some students email their work when their course names a different route. The MJML-023 manual names the Study Centre, or the LMS for online learners, and gives no email route for the portfolio.
How many copies, and handed in where? Many students cannot answer that. For MJML-023 the manual asks for the portfolio at the Study Centre and a copy kept with you, and sets no other count.
On courses with online submission, students upload half-finished files, several loose files where one belongs, or a first page with the wrong details, and incomplete submissions are generally not evaluated. For MJML-023 online learners the route is the LMS, and the manual asks for the activities compiled in a portfolio format.
MAJMC and PGJMC books that sit beside the practical
The IGNOU MJML 023 Practical portfolio is not sold on shrichakradhar.com, because the portfolio has to be your own work. What the store carries for the same first year is reading for the theory papers, which feed the story writing: reporting, writing and editing, and broadcast and online journalism.

Seven activities and 100 marks in the IGNOU MJML 023 Practical
The IGNOU MJML 023 Practical table in the manual gives each activity a ceiling and an allotted mark. The marks add up to 100, and the manual sets the minimum passing mark at 40.
MJML-023 activities with their limits and marks
Built from the MJML-023 Practical Manual (applicable from January 2025) read in November 2026.
| No. | Activity | Ceiling | What the manual asks | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Story ideas | Five only | About 100 words each, answering the 5Ws and 1H, with a news angle and at least three sources | 5 each, 25 |
| 2 | Full story drafts | Three | At least 450 words each, inverted pyramid, at least five external news links listed at the end | 10 each, 30 |
| 3 | Backgrounder story | One | At least 800 words compiled from at least 10 resources, relevant when written, links at the bottom | 10 |
| 4 | Infographic | One | A news infographic based on publicly available data | 5 |
| 5 | News video or audio story | One | At least 3 minutes, recorded on your own mobile device, uploaded to your YouTube account, link in the portfolio | 10 |
| 6 | Handling social media | Eight screenshots | An X account created with your enrolment number, judged on content writing and posts or designs | 10 |
| 7 | Review of a news portal | 500 words | A review of www.medialit.in/thevoices on five set points | 10 |
The manual’s opening asks you to complete the activities “in any combination” to secure the marks to pass, and says every effort is counted. It does not mark any activity as optional. The arithmetic is plain: an activity you leave out takes its marks out of the 100, and the manual allows no second evaluation of the same work. The manual prints no separate written paper; it says your contributions are evaluated for 100 marks in accordance with the University’s norms.
The written part of a practical is where the most marks slip away, and it is also the part easiest to put right. The written MJML-023 activities, meaning the story ideas, the drafts, the backgrounder and the review, carry 75 of the 100 marks.
Some work we see runs well beyond the length a course sets and comes back. MJML-023 sets lengths for most items: about 100 words per story idea and a 500-word review, with minimums of 450 words, 800 words and 3 minutes for the drafts, the backgrounder and the video.
Across practicals, learners who do well begin early, check the rules at the centre they belong to, keep a dated record of their work and know each page well enough to explain it. For MJML-023 an early start counts, because the portfolio is due by 30 June or 31 December.
Three IGNOU MJML 023 Practical questions found in this month’s research
From result pages and the Search Console data of our sister site
Is there a ready IGNOU MJML 023 practical file to submit?
Pages returned in this month’s searches sell an MJML 023 practical file with the stories, backgrounder and review already written. The manual marks your own contributions, Activities 5 and 6 run on your own YouTube and X accounts, and no work may be evaluated twice. This site sells no MJML-023 portfolio.
Does MJML-023 have a viva or a presentation?
The MJML-023 manual mentions no viva and no presentation; it describes evaluation of the portfolio for 100 marks. The MJML-220 manual states that its evaluation has no viva; the MJML-221 manual says the same but also asks learners to keep their audio and video files ready to show at a viva voce.
Many students cannot tell whether a viva applies to them. The MJML-023 manual sets no viva stage, only the portfolio for 100 marks.
How do I check my IGNOU practical status after MJML-023?
The July 2026 Common Prospectus lists practicalsed@ignou.ac.in as the contact for practical marks of all programmes. If your IGNOU practical result for the IGNOU MJML 023 Practical does not show after the term you submitted for, write to that address with your enrolment number, the course code and the term.
A student who kept no receipt or acknowledgement has no proof to show if marks later go missing. Ask the Study Centre for an acknowledgement when you hand in the MJML-023 portfolio, and keep the copy the manual tells you to keep.
Practical marks often reach the grade card after the theory marks, and for a final-year learner the result can stay pending, which may affect a job offer or an admission. For a PGJMC learner, MJML-023 sits in that final year, since the diploma is one year long.
What the manual asks the portfolio to hold
For the IGNOU MJML 023 Practical, the manual asks you to compile the activities in a portfolio format. Inside it go the five story ideas, the three drafts with their links at the end, the backgrounder with its resource links at the bottom, the infographic, the YouTube link to your video or audio story, the eight X screenshots and the 500-word review.
What the manual leaves out is just as useful to know. The MJML-220 and MJML-221 manuals each list a cover page, the IGNOU identity card, the examination fee receipt and a table of activities; the MJML-023 manual prints no cover fields, no attachment list, no binding and no page order, and it asks for no handwriting. If your Study Centre asks for a cover sheet or a fee receipt with the MJML-023 portfolio, follow its instruction.
Many students are unsure which documents a submission must carry, and the work is sent back for it. The MJML-023 manual names the seven activities with their links and screenshots, and no other document.
Many students are unsure of the right page order. The MJML-023 manual prints none, so the order of activities 1 to 7 in the manual’s table is the simple one to follow.
Some students spiral-bind the final file. The MJML-023 manual names no binding and asks only for a portfolio format.
Story ideas, three drafts and a backgrounder
In the IGNOU MJML 023 Practical, activities 1 to 3 carry 65 of the 100 marks. Each of the five story ideas is about 100 words, answers the 5Ws and 1H, identifies your news angle and names at least three sources. The three full drafts run to at least 450 words each in the inverted pyramid style, with at least five external news links related to the story given at the end. The backgrounder runs to at least 800 words, compiles data from at least 10 resources, has to be relevant at the time you write it, and carries the links to those resources at the bottom.
Plan each activity around its own work. The manual allows no second evaluation of any one work or part of it, so a story idea you expand into a draft, or a draft you reuse in the backgrounder, risks being counted once.
In practical work, many entries describe what was done, one after another, while evaluators look for a link to a concept or method from the course. For an MJML-023 story idea, the method is spelt out: answer the 5Ws and 1H, and state your news angle.
Practical reports usually follow a set sequence, and a missing part costs marks. The structure MJML-023 names for its three drafts is the inverted pyramid style, with at least five external news links at the end.
In many submissions the reference list does not follow one consistent format and fails to match the material used. MJML-023 sets no citation style, so give the links (at least five) under each draft and the 10 resource links under the backgrounder in one consistent format.
The infographic and the three-minute news video
Activities 4 and 5 of the IGNOU MJML 023 Practical are the visual ones. The infographic is a single news graphic built on publicly available data, worth 5 marks. For the news video or audio story, worth 10, you identify a news story, record it on your own mobile device for at least 3 minutes, upload it to your YouTube account and share the link in the portfolio. The manual names no editing software and no channel format, so a phone recording that meets the length and the upload rule is what it describes.
Many students build their work on secondary data alone. In MJML-023 the infographic is meant to use published figures, since the manual asks for publicly available data, while each story idea still names at least three sources.
Some students fill a data section with assumed figures in place of real ones. For the MJML-023 infographic, take each number from the publicly available data you name, because the activity rests on that data.
Students from Hindi-medium schooling often struggle with technical English, and English-medium students often miss the terms when they choose Hindi. MAJMC is offered in English, Hindi and Tamil, and the MJML-023 manual prints no language rule for the portfolio.
Eight X screenshots and a review of The Voices
The last two activities of the IGNOU MJML 023 Practical are about platforms. For Activity 6 you create an X account with your enrolment number, share your stories from it and submit eight screenshots, evaluated on content writing and on posts or designs, for 10 marks. The manual says to share “your stories from points 4 to 11”, while its table stops at activity 7, so ask your Study Centre which items it expects on X.
Activity 7 is a 500-word review of www.medialit.in/thevoices, for 10 marks, on five points: the nature of the stories published, their qualities, the web design, two suggestions to improve the news coverage and two to improve the web design. The site’s footer describes The Voices as the Lab Journal of SOJNMS, IGNOU, maintained by the School, and it was live with 2026 posts when we read it in November 2026. You are reviewing the School’s own lab journal, so base each point on stories you actually read there.
Many students think they must lift a topic word for word from a printed list. MJML-023 prints no topic list for its stories; the one subject the manual fixes is the portal for Activity 7.
Students often juggle three versions, one from the handbook, one from a counsellor and one from a senior’s sample, and cannot tell which to trust. For MJML-023 the document is the manual applicable from January 2025, posted on the SOJNMS project manual page and in eGyanKosh, together with any notice from your Regional Centre.
Tips from a friend at another study centre can mislead, since submission processes can vary between centres. The MJML-023 manual sends you to your own Study Centre, so put the points 4 to 11 question to that centre.
Plan the IGNOU MJML 023 Practical from the activity table, start with the five story ideas, and keep the YouTube and X work in your own name from the first day. If you go on to the MAJMC second year and choose the dissertation, MJMP-120, you can see our customised project service for that course.
