What the IGNOU BHCL 121 Practical is in the BAFHSC first semester

The short answer for BAFHSC learners

The IGNOU BHCL 121 Practical is Fundamentals of Human Development Practical, a 2-credit course in the first semester of BAFHSC. You do six compulsory exercises, from a pregnancy interview to talks with two elderly people, record them in a practical notebook, then sit a three-hour practical exam with a viva.

BAFHSC is the Bachelor of Arts (Home Science) that IGNOU’s School of Continuing Education runs under the four-year undergraduate framework, in English and Hindi. In semester one, the IGNOU BHCL 121 Practical sits beside its theory partner, BHCC 121 Fundamentals of Human Development (4 credits). The handbook, dated September 2025 and printed for BA first year, expects you to have read BHCC 121 before the exercises: Unit 5 before the pregnancy interview, Unit 2 before the craft worksheets and Unit 6 before the preschool observation.

Many learners we speak to discover the practical side of their programme only when the session is well under way. BAFHSC pairs BHCL-121 with BHCC-121 in the same first semester, so the two run side by side from the day you register.

Across practical courses, we see learners who handle the theory papers comfortably get stuck on the record and the practical exam. BHCL-121 carries its own 100 marks, assessed apart from the BHCC-121 paper.

In our experience, learners from Hindi-medium schooling struggle with a technical write-up in English, and English-medium learners who switch to Hindi can run short of terms. The BHCL-121 handbook we read is the English edition and sets no language rule for the notebook, so settle the language with your counsellor before the first exercise.

The six exercises and the life stage each one covers

The IGNOU BHCL 121 Practical walks through the lifespan in six exercises, and the handbook states plainly that all six are compulsory. Four of them put you in front of a real person; two ask you to design material for young children.

Exercise, life stage, tool and how its 5 internal marks split

Built from the BHCL-121 handbook (September 2025) read in November 2026.

PracticalLife stageTool in the handbookWho or what you work withMarks basis
1PrenatalStructured interview schedule, 11 questions under five headsOne pregnant woman, preferably from your community, family or a nearby healthcare setupFilled schedule 2.5, interpretation and reflection 2.5
2Early years, 2 to 3Five craft worksheets you designConcepts suited to children aged 2 to 31 mark per worksheet
3Early childhood, 4 to 6Five craft worksheets you designConcepts suited to the 4 to 6 age band1 mark per worksheet
4Preschool, 3 to 6Checklist of 15 behaviours in five domainsOne preschool child, with consent from a parent or guardianChecklist 2.5, analysis 2.5
5AdolescenceInterview schedule, 13 questions in four sectionsAn adolescent aged 13 to 19, in middle or high schoolFilled schedule 2.5, interpretation and reflection 2.5
6Late adulthoodStructured interview schedule, 15 questions in five sectionsTwo elderly people: one in an old age home and one living with family, or one man and one womanFilled schedule 2.5, interpretation and reflection 2.5

Only the best four exercise scores, at 5 marks each, make up the 20 marks for practical conduction and record. The handbook still asks for all six, and the counsellor’s evaluation sheet lists every exercise before ticking the four that count.

Students often ask us whether their worksheet themes must come from the handbook’s list. For BHCL-121 they need not: the handbook offers seven ideas for the 2 to 3 year sheets and five for the older group as examples, and asks you to pick five concepts of your own for each.

Looking across practical courses, three causes keep coming back: rules reach learners late and differ by centre, the work assumes time and travel that working learners rarely have spare, and the record gets treated as formatting when it should show applied learning. BHCL-121 asks you to meet real participants in four of its exercises, so the time cost is real.

Counselling sessions, attendance and your Learner Support Centre

For the IGNOU BHCL 121 Practical, the academic counsellor at your Learner Support Centre explains each exercise in a counselling session, demonstrates it, and has learners rehearse interviews and observations in pairs or small groups before anyone goes to the field. The counsellor then monitors your field work, gives feedback, and evaluates each report for accuracy of observation, quality of interview, ethical conduct, completeness and reflective analysis.

Attendance is not a side issue here. It carries 10 of the 30 internal marks in the handbook’s table, and the July 2026 Common Prospectus states, as a general rule for practical components, that attendance at practical sessions is compulsory and that the Learner Support Centres provide the schedule.

Most learners who reach us are working, running a home, or both, and practical sessions are where many of them lose ground. In BHCL-121 the counsellor marks attendance as part of internal assessment, so a missed session shows up directly in your internal marks.

Practical sessions tend to run on fixed dates, and learners who do not keep checking their centre’s notice board or website miss the slot and wait for the next cycle. For BHCL-121, the place to watch is your own Learner Support Centre, which the prospectus names as the source of the practical schedule.

Learners regularly ask us whether the practical notebook goes to the study centre, the Regional Centre or IGNOU headquarters. The BHCL-121 handbook settles it: your academic counsellor assesses the notebook, and you carry it to the term-end practical exam held at the study centre.

IGNOU BHCL 121 Practical marks: 30 internal, 70 at the term-end exam

The IGNOU BHCL 121 Practical is marked out of 100, split into internal assessment (30 percent weightage) and a term-end practical examination including viva voce (70 percent weightage).

Where the 100 BHCL-121 marks come from

PartComponentMarksRecorded on
InternalAttendance10Annexure A, by the academic counsellor
InternalPractical conduction and record, best four exercises at 5 each20Annexure A
ExternalPractical exercise conduction and answer sheet in the term-end exam50Annexure B, by the counsellor or external examiner
ExternalViva voce in the term-end exam20Annexure B

Totals on both annexures are written in figures and in words. The handbook prints no separate pass mark for BHCL-121, so this page states none.

In the practical records we see, the write-up is where marks slip away most easily, and it is also the part a learner can most readily fix. In BHCL-121 the record sits inside those 20 internal marks, judged on clarity, accuracy, depth, ethical conduct and presentation.

Many learners are unsure whether a viva applies to them. In BHCL-121 it does: the viva is part of the external assessment, taken by the internal examiner together with the external examiner or course coordinator, and the handbook allows it online when physical presence is not possible.

A viva is easy to treat as a formality, yet the BHCL-121 viva alone is worth 20 marks, and a tidy notebook does not rescue a learner who cannot say why a probe question was asked or what a checklist tick means. Learners who ran their own interviews answer with the most confidence.

Where the BHCL 121 practical manual contradicts itself

Read the BHCL 121 practical manual from cover to cover and a handful of mismatches appear. Each one affects what you write in your procedure section, and the first one changes the age of the children you plan for.

  • Practicals 2 and 3: The introduction and the framework table call them craft books on milestones for birth to 3 years and for 3 to 6 years. The exercise pages ask for five craft worksheets each: ages 2 to 3 in Practical 2, and in Practical 3, ages 4 to 6 in the title but 3 to 6 in the instructions.
  • Practical 4, domains: The framework table speaks of milestones in one of the domains, while the checklist on the response sheet covers five domains and 15 behaviours.
  • Practical 4, analysis: Guideline section 4.4 repeats the Practical 1 prompts about challenges shared by the participant and her experiences. The response sheet asks the right questions for a child: strengths, areas needing support, and any delays or advanced skills.
  • Practical 5, tool: The framework table and the handbook’s guide to interviews describe a semi-structured guide for adolescents; the exercise page calls it a structured schedule with fixed questions.
  • Where you write: The handbook prints response sheets with blank lines, yet the counsellor’s procedure says learners write the report in their practical notebook.

Where the pages differ, the exercise page and its response sheet are the more detailed instruction. Ask your academic counsellor which age band, interview style and writing surface your centre expects, and note the answer in your procedure section.

Learners regularly reach us holding one format from the handbook, another from a counsellor and a third from a senior’s old file. For BHCL-121, the handbook’s five-part format and its response sheets are the reference, and your counsellor explains the reporting process in the counselling session.

Advice from a friend at another study centre often does not match your own centre’s practice. The BHCL-121 handbook fixes the exercises, the marks and the exam, while session dates come from your own Learner Support Centre.

Many learners are unsure which pages their record must carry. The BHCL-121 handbook prints one certificate, in its appendix, for you and your academic counsellor to sign; it prints no cover page, index or declaration format.

Practicals 1, 5 and 6: the three interview exercises

Three of the six IGNOU BHCL 121 Practical exercises are interviews. Practicals 1 and 5 draw the same five steps: preparation, rapport building, informed consent, conducting the interview, and thanking the participant; Practical 6 draws the first four. You need the schedule printed in the workbook, a notebook and pen, a consent form, and an audio recorder only if the participant permits it.

Practical 1, pregnancy. The profile records age, trimester, number of children, family type, occupation, rural or urban residence, and where she consults: government hospital, private hospital, community health centre or no medical consultation. The name line stays blank if she wishes, to respect confidentiality. The 11 questions fall under physical wellbeing, emotional experiences, support system, access to health and daily life adjustments. Record her answers exactly as given; your own reading of her mood, comfort and prenatal care belongs in the discussion.

Practical 5, adolescence. Choose an adolescent aged 13 to 19 and note school level and setting. The 13 questions cover peer relationships, peer pressure and social influence, emotional and social impact, and reflection and coping. The counsellor’s procedure includes consent from the guardian when the participant is a minor.

Practical 6, late adulthood. Pick one route: one elderly person in an old age home and one living with family, or one man and one woman from the same or different families. The 15 questions run through daily routine, emotional wellbeing, social interaction, physical health and care, and life review. Your analysis compares the two people by living arrangement or by gender, whichever route you chose.

Records that reach our desk often stop at what happened, such as “met the participant and asked the questions”. The BHCL-121 discussion sections ask you to read the answers through physical, emotional and social domains and developmental theory, which is where the second half of each interview exercise’s marks sits.

Some learners keep only their write-up and leave the filled schedule out of the record. In BHCL-121, the filled interview schedule is itself half the marks for Practicals 1, 5 and 6, so it belongs in the notebook.

Practicals 2, 3 and 4: craft worksheets and the preschool checklist

The middle of the IGNOU BHCL 121 Practical moves from talking to designing and watching. For each of the ten worksheets, the response sheet asks for the theme, a title, objectives, materials required, the worksheet itself and your reflection on the developmental domains it serves: physical and motor, cognitive, language, emotional, social and moral. The handbook’s samples are a fruit identification and colouring sheet for ages 2 to 3, and a rainbow made from torn coloured paper for the older group.

Practical 4 asks you to select a preschool child aged 3 to 6 at home, in school or in a play area after the parent or guardian consents, and to watch during free play, structured tasks and social interaction on two different occasions. The checklist holds 15 behaviours, such as hopping on one foot, using scissors, asking questions, following group rules and understanding cause and effect. Mark each as achieved, not achieved or not observed, and write the date, time and place. If you did not see a behaviour, the handbook asks you to mark it not observed rather than guess; an anecdotal record can capture something important that the checklist misses.

In many records we see, references follow no consistent style or list books the text does not draw on. BHCL-121 asks for references in APA format for the materials consulted, and the Practical 4 guideline adds books, manuals and reliable websites.

The learners who handle practical courses well begin early, check the rules with their own centre, keep a dated record as they work, gather signatures on time, and can explain each page in their own words. In BHCL-121, that means dating both Practical 4 visits as you make them.

Writing the BHCL 121 practical file in the five-part format

The IGNOU BHCL 121 Practical handbook sets a general five-part format and prints, in brackets, what each part is judged on; the response sheets for Practicals 1, 4, 5 and 6 follow it, while the two worksheet exercises use their own sheet. This is the BHCL 121 practical file your counsellor reads.

  1. Title, aim or objectives, and introduction (understanding of concept and objective). The introduction draws on your BHCC 121 reading.
  2. Description of tool, materials required, and procedure (accuracy and completeness of procedure), including preparation, rapport building, informed consent and instructions.
  3. Participant’s profile and observation or interview record (quality of data): age, gender, developmental stage and setting, without disclosing identity.
  4. Analysis, interpretation and discussion (analysis and interpretation of findings): a summary, interpretation against developmental theories and milestones, and unusual or key observations.
  5. Learner’s reflection, conclusion and references (report writing, structure and reflection): your learning and challenges, a conclusion, and APA references.

The appendix certificate states that you, as a BAFHSC first-year learner, completed the practical work in BHCL 121. It carries your name, enrolment number, Learner Support Centre, Regional Centre, place and date, your signature, and the academic counsellor’s name, designation and signature.

Records that drop one part of a fixed sequence lose marks even when the rest is careful. The BHCL-121 format names its five parts in order, from title and aim to reflection and references, and each part carries its own assessment heading in brackets.

One gap we come across is a counsellor’s signature missing from a page that needs one. The BHCL-121 certificate leaves space for the academic counsellor’s signature and designation, so get it signed while your sessions are still running.

A wrong enrolment number or centre name on the first page is a common slip. The BHCL-121 certificate asks for your enrolment number, Learner Support Centre and Regional Centre, so copy them from your IGNOU identity card.

Whose words and whose data go into the notebook?

Yours. The IGNOU BHCL 121 Practical is assessed on data you collect: a schedule filled during a real interview, a checklist marked while you watched a real child, worksheets you designed. This publisher sells no BHCL-121 practical file, record or filled schedule, and no reference book can stand in for a participant you met. Keep participants anonymous, take consent, and respect a participant’s right to withdraw at any time.

Copied practical files do the rounds online, and some learners hand one in after swapping in their own name and enrolment number. When several learners at one centre submit the same record it stands out quickly, and BHCL-121 ends in a viva where the examiner can ask about your own participant.

Some learners fill a schedule from imagination without meeting anyone. The BHCL-121 handbook asks you to record the participant’s responses carefully, word for word in Practical 1, and in the term-end exam you conduct a practical on the day and report it in the answer sheet.

Many learners lift introductions and worksheet pictures from internet pages without checking them. For BHCL-121, the handbook suggests basing the Practical 1 introduction on BHCC-121 Unit 5 and asks you to design your own worksheets, with sources listed in APA.

Exam day, the practical fee and the exam form for IGNOU BHCL 121 Practical

The term-end exam for the IGNOU BHCL 121 Practical is held separately and lasts three hours. Regional Centres conduct it at the study centres, and the paper is set by the programme coordinators at IGNOU headquarters. On the day you receive the question paper, collect the material the exercise needs, conduct the practical and report your findings in the answer sheet, which goes to the internal examiner. The viva follows. Bring your practicum notebook: the handbook says so in as many words.

BHCL-121 is a 2-credit course, so it falls in the up-to-4-credit slab of the practical examination fee: Rs 300 under the July 2026 Common Prospectus, paid along with the Term-End Examination form. The prospectus adds that an examination fee once paid is neither refunded nor adjusted if you do not appear. The handbook prints no separate notebook deadline; it says only that you bring the notebook to the exam, so ask your counsellor if your centre sets an earlier date for internal assessment.

Many learners are unsure which practical fee applies and mix up Rs 300 with Rs 500. BHCL-121 carries 2 credits, which places it in the lower slab.

In our records, 70 to 80 percent of learners start work only in the final month before a date falls due. The BHCL-121 handbook prints no notebook deadline and names the term-end practical exam as the day the notebook comes with you, and four field exercises are hard to fit into the final weeks before it.

Some learners hold back in the belief that IGNOU stretches each last date by a month. Whether the exam form date moves in a given session cannot be predicted here, and the BHCL-121 practical fee goes in with that form.

BHCL-121 Fundamentals of Human Development Practical: questions students search

Three questions BAFHSC learners search

Is there a BHCL 121 assignment to submit?

The evaluation of the IGNOU BHCL 121 Practical has no tutor-marked assignment: the 30 internal marks come from attendance and the practical record. Of this theory-practical pair, IGNOU’s assignment booklet is for the theory course BHCC-121, and our BAFHSC handwritten assignment set covers BHCC codes, not any BHCL code.

Ask about the BHCC-121 handwritten set

Can I download a ready BHCL 121 practical file PDF?

The handbook itself is on eGyanKosh, listed in the sources below, with its response sheets. A filled file is a different matter: Practicals 1, 4, 5 and 6 need your own participants and the viva tests them, so we do not sell one.

When do BHCL-121 practical marks show on the grade card?

The counsellor records internal marks on Annexure A and the external marks go on Annexure B; the handbook does not say when they are uploaded.

On many grade cards we see, the practical marks arrive after the theory marks, which can hold up a result. For a first-year course like BHCL-121, that delay matters if you plan to leave BAFHSC with the UG Certificate after year one.

Learners who keep no receipt have nothing to show when a mark goes missing. For BHCL-121, keep the exam form confirmation, the Rs 300 fee receipt and a photo of the signed certificate page.
